My 2 weeks of medical leave are over tomorrow, which means I get to find out how much drastically worse my garbage boss has managed to make things in my absence. Can't wait! Arm hurts worse today than it has in about a week. Coincidence? š
Now, the answer is probably the first thing, given that this whole campaign centres on the afterlife and the control thereof, but: did Brennan have "Thjazi's soul is MIA" locked and loaded, or did he improv that on the spot?
Cool either way, but sometimes - naming no names and definitely not talking about anybody I know - DMs forget about spells. Like Speak with Dead. Like fully forget specific spells exist and fail to account for them. Until critical moments where the players realize they can absolutely wreck your shit with toys you just handed to them. And suddenly, surprise! New lore. Nah, it's always been like that! Works for cool setting-spanning stuff as well as stuff invented in a storytelling emergency to frustrate players. For their own good. And the story. And stuff.
There are just. A lot of spells, guys. š¤£
"anyone in the family can turn swords into ploughshares"
"she turned swords into stories"
GODDAMMIT BRENNAN THAT'S SO GOOD š
"the Sundered Houses have been planning something"

man when an Einfasen brings out the giant stone hammer you have two (2) possibilities
Brennan desperately piloting Hero and her chalkboard to force 13 PCs to make an actual plan, lolol
Really feeling Brennan coming right out and telling the players "if you choose not to take a long rest that is a mistake for which I will mechanically punish you." Too real.

I'm just imagining them getting to Mara at the same moment that Thjazi's Mythopoeic Magical Spell of Fixing Shit is going off at the Hallowed Round and Whatever the Fuck Horrifying Eldritch Massacre Ritual is going down at the Villa Aurora and she says "oh good, you sent all your soldiers to [third location you guys knew nothing about because you were so fixated on the play being a Sundered Houses plot], right? There's an army of the dead coming out from there."
(Also someone still needs to make a ploughshare, whatever that means.)
To be clear, I do think that getting Wick into that meeting is a good move, if they can swing it, but it does require them to sell that they went off on their own for reasons unrelated to Grandma Halovar ordering Teor killed. Which is only possible if Yanessa doesn't know that they rescued Teor - because if she does know that, there's no story they can tell that will persuade her to do anything other than, at best, locking Wick up and banishing Tyranny, and at worst, killing them both on sight.
Here's the problem: we don't know whether Yanessa knows the actual circumstances of Teor's escape or not (the fact that the tailors were seen alive by Bolaire after the rescue implies that they didn't share all the details with Yanessa, but also they might have lied about the details - they clearly know Teor is alive, and that he and Wick are probably together, which if anything suggests, to me, that they've guessed Wick has gone astray and are at least hoping to recapture him). Nobody has done insight on what she believes about Wick'a disappearance. Wick and Tyranny also do not know this. Without that knowledge, plan Wick Goes Home is an enormous gamble.
A fun one, though. No question.

Are we back to thinking the Sundered Houses are planning to use the play??? I thought we'd put this one to bed last time. š
You guys need to be focusing on what the Sundered Houses are meeting about at the same time as the play guys, like, right now. The anchor and the ploughshares and the blood and the paint, that was Thjazi's plan. I don't think that's the bit you need to be worrying about. Whatever Thjazi meant for the paint, I don't think Hal was supposed to know about it until it was already underway.
Reblog if you're transmasc, support trans men, or want a chocolate chip cookie
given the current climate this pride especially i feel i must mention that i love my trans friends, i stand with trans people in the fight against transphobic legislation and those who would enforce it, and this blog is not a good place for you to be if you do not vibe with that
letās settle this shit but do NOT reblog if youāre gonna be modest about it like a little BITCH. anyway privilege check tell me which ones apply to you: hot, funny, can dance, can do math, can spell, can drive, can cook
If I had a nickel for every big name Harry Potter fanfic writer who started their own cult, Iād have two nickels. Which isnāt a lot but itās weird that it happened twice.
Oh man, are we talking about Snape wives?? I because every time I remember them I just have to stare off into the distance for a while.
Iād have three nickels.
What is a Snape Wife? Someone fill me in on all these Harry Potter cults š
Snape wives (or as they called themselves, Snapeists) were an online cult made mostly of middle-aged women who believed the following
Severus Snape is an omniscient, unkillable entity residing on the astral plane.
Snape is the one true god.
Snape possessed JKR to write the Harry Potter books, but she got several things wrong; most importantly Snape dying.
The spirit of Snape abandoned JKR because she wasnāt good enough for him and created the Snapists instead.
Snape chose several Snapists that have a special connection with him to lead his religion.
Snapists can serve Snape by marrying him and becoming sister-wives (there was lots of debate on if they could have boyfriends/husbands other than Snape in the real world).
Snape contacts his followers who are worthy, both in dreams and by possessing real life people.
To be worthy of Snape, you need to be⦠basically a tradwife. Obey Snape in all things, never question him, donāt be independent, be pretty, be thin, only have feminine hobbies, etc.
The snapewives wrote a crazy amount of fanfiction about Snape, both erotic and otherwise. Plus they had their own prayers, ceremonies, shrines⦠shit was wild. The whole religion fell apart when one of the leaders criticized Snape and was subsequently bullied out of the community and another decided that the one true god was actually Jethro Gibbs from NCIS.
when the second half of that last sentence hits you like a brick in the face
Wait, what were the other two HP cults?
Less Weong/Eliezer Yudkowsky of Harry Potter and the Methods of RationalityĀ
Thanfiction of Dumbledoreās Army and the Year of Darkness fame
And I remember the era of Snapeās on an Astral Plane.
I was there, Gandalf. I was there 3,000 years agoā¦
Thank you, and also, now that I have googled these, Iām pretty sure there was a reason I forgot all of this.
I wish I could go back to five minutes ago when I didnāt know that Snapewives existed
Wait wait I did not know that Methods of Rationality had a cult.
I mean Iām also not surprised, having read like a dozen chapters of it and then bailed because it was too self-righteous and condescending.
If youāre interested, YouTuber and Tumblr commentator Strange Aeons has videos on all three of these.
the phrase āmarried on the Astral Planeā is forever in my head and I fucking hate it
I remembered Snapewives and scrolled down the list thinking "okay but what was the Thanfiction HP cult, I know there was one, they're always in there somewhere..." And ah, yes. There it was.

I donāt think anyone at Critical Role knows what the word ānonceā actually means.
Sigh. The number of people who don't realize that nonce has a different meaning in the US than the UK, and thus insist that it was used wrongly, when it was used for exactly the right meaning in US terms.
Iām from the US and Iāve literally never heard someone use it in āUS termsā before. Iām not even sure what the āUS termā is supposed to mean.
Itās not included in the Wikipedia entry for the slang term, which only acknowledges it as a British slang term. Merriam-Webster only acknowledges its original meaning as related to time. The Cambridge dictionary actually only includes the UK slang meaning. Dictionary.com includes both the original meaning and the UK slang, with no supposed US version of the term acknowledged.
So excuuuuuuse me if a lot of people know this primarily UK slang term by its UK usage, given that itās not widely used enough in the US for even native speakers or the internet to acknowledge an alternative slang usage.
Just so many possible magical blood sources to be making paint with. No matter they couldn't pin it down.
