Incredibly violent take of mine but I actually don’t think you need to relate to a story in any way to enjoy it. You can enjoy a story even if you can’t point at a character and insert some aspect of your personality or identity into them. In fact I would argue the need for a character like that to be present in every single story you experience is a sign of stunted growth.

going through all the muppet movies in a row made me realize that like. miss piggy was made in the 70's. and it's so rare even today to have a character like her. she's loud, she's selfish, she's funny, she's extremely vain, she's obsessed with romance, she's violent, she's kind of annoying, and there's not a single moment in any of these films where she's asked to tone down any of these personality traits. i am not joking when i say that miss piggy might be one of the best treated female characters ever written

also I realize that this is not the point of Us (2019) but I do think that Red is correct for revenging herself on the non-tethered. It's justifiable that a normal little girl, finding herself stranded in a bizarre mirror world where no one speaks, no one does much of anything really, but each and every one of them is nevertheless forced to inexplicably change---partner, have children, die, mirrored to people they do not see or know---would decide to revenge herself on the whole system and agitate for her people to kill their oppressors. That's just sensible.

I read it when I was I think about 10, Watership Down when I was 11 or so, then onto Treasure Island and Robinson Crusoe (and then Animorphs which was massive emotional wiplash). Don't under estimate bookish kids.
