"accessibility" needs to stop meaning "low-engagement"
"we are making our TTRPG more accessible!"
"oh, did you make the font bigger and more legible?"
"no we're just doing the next edition in D&D5e"
"we're making our video game more accessible!"
"oh did you add an option to remap the controls?"
"no we just added an option to remove combat so the game is just a bunch of cutscenes"
im so confused about the artemis thing because theres that post going around about how its propoganda and they make a lot of good points but people i care about a lot are really excited about it and i dont want to hurt them and honeslty im tired of things that look good being bad
Hey.
The fascists donât like NASA.
They donât want stuff like this to happen.
They want to give NASAâs budget to the already bloated military.
As far as Iâm concerned, itâs fine to celebrate a massive peaceful scientific achievement thatâs a collaboration between the US and Canada space programs during a time when thereâs so much bad news elsewhere.
I personally hope that this encourages a lot of kids to grow up and defend our space agencies.
but DO techbros like nasa? a lot of techbros i see are super into the idea of privatized space travel industry and colonizing mars, the first of which nasa is directly opposed to, and the second which nasa isn't really focused on.
the techbros i see really aren't into the type of science nasa does focus on researching, which is far less glamorous than what they want.
Not only do tech bros generally hate the quiet kind of science that NASA does alongside the flashy launches (NASA is a primary reason why we have literally any weather data in the US), but tech bros REALLY hate the other half of the Artemis Program that I don't really hear people talk about much
The Artemis Accords are one of the first large-scale civil policies about space and related activities to come about since the Outer Space Treaty in 1967. NASA wants to hold people (at least a little) accountable for the junk they're leaving in our orbit, and not enough people talked about this shit back when it got signed, so I wanna talk about it now
NASA, in coordination with the U.S. Department of State and seven other initial signatory nations, established the Artemis Accords in 2020.
Hey. Hey, listen to me. You cannot make your moral decisions based on whether bad people like something. If the techbros like pancakes the pancakes don't become bad. If the techbros hate golf the golf doesn't become good. Please think about ethics beyond group associations.
Happy International Kiss Day!
Have a photo of the Sicilian actor Giovanni Grasso kissing the Catalan playwright and poet Ăngel GuimerĂ (1845-1924).
Grasso played the main character in the Sicilian version of GuimerĂ 's world-famous play Terra Baixa (translated to English as Martha of the Lowlands). The Sicilian language tour became a big hit especially in Argentina (there was a large number of Sicilian immigrants in Argentina). Some letters between the two have been preserved, showing the very close and sweet relation between GuimerĂ and Grasso.
GuimerĂ was most likely homosexual from what we can tell by his letters, life, and his exploration of the inability to have biological children in his play The Spider (L'aranya). He is buried in the same tomb as the journalist and pro-Catalan politician Pere Aldavert. GuimerĂ and Aldavert lived together for half of their life and gave each other mutual powers in front of a notary on Saint Valentine's Day of the year 1910.
If you would like to learn more about Ăngel GuimerĂ and how he was candidate for the Nobel Literature Prize 17 years in a row but blocked as part of Spain's discrimination against the Catalan language, you'll find it in my previous post linked here.
Nowadays, he remains one of the most respected and loved theatre authors in the whole history of Catalan literature.

did i tell u guys i got into an argument on twitter bc i said foxes are dogs and someone tried to bring up their actual fuckin. classification or whatever and i just said âfoxes are dogs cause they are fluffyeâ and they kept arguing with me. the entire time i was like âyou will not survive the immigration to tumblr you are lucky we are not there right nowâ
This is especially funny because they arenât even right. Foxes *ARE* dogs.
No they arenât.
yes they are. because they are fluffye.
OK yes they are.
Different family, but same order as @pictures-of-dogs
No, they are the same family. They are the same kingdom, phylum, order and family. They separate at the genus.
Theyâre a dog.
yeah theyâre fluffye
theyre literally not dogs theyre not even fluffy. can we get science tumblr over hear or what!?
checkmate athiests
fluffye
okay but they literally are dogs, for those who are confused
If foxes are dogs, then so are wolves, coyotes, dingoes, jackals, and several other extant and extinct species.
Behold! A dog.
of course itâs a dog you buffoon. itâs fluffye.
Why on earth would someone think âBUT IF THEYâRE DOGS SO AR -â
Like yes of course wolves are dogs, where have you been. Jackals are excellent doggies! So are coyotes. Why is this confusing.
I love that this is literally two completely different arguments running simultaneously.
That guy up there who said theyâre not even fluffy was thinking of sharks
sharks are also dogs. ravenous water dogs, but still dogs
Sharks can NOT be dogs they are SMOOTH
Tags via @jenroses
sharks are smooth dogs
BEHOLD, a SHARK
incorrect. all land animals evolved from bony fish, which evolved after the cartilaginous fish that sharks came from. so foxes and dogs are fish, but they are not sharks. sharks are definitely smooth, though. i hope this clears things up.

"Katara was the first one to reach out to Zuko"
Nope, it was Aang
and zuko has never forgotten his words :)
the joy of working with middle school aged children is that, regardless of how long you've been doing it, they will always find novel ways to annoy and confuse you, which is okay because that's the natural state of the middle school aged child. anyway suffice it to say that for the past three weeks of school my 6th grade class has been greeting me at my door by lining up outside of it, playing the national anthem, and saluting me as i walk in.
What they're doing to you:
some of you guys are going to have to start internalizing and accepting the fact that you will not be able to tell some indigenous people apart from white people at a glance, no matter what their 'blood quantum' [gag] is, partially because genetics is wild, and partially because there are indigenous groups that are naturally paler than whatever you're thinking right now.
I'm not in the know like at all when it comes to indigenous things, may I ask why the "[gag]" with every "blood quantum"
Yeah no worries!
Blood quantum is a nightmare concept. It is essentially how much 'native blood' you 'legally' have according to the government.
It is not traditional, it is not cultural, it is not something Indigenous nations ever used to measure belonging.
It was created by colonizers as a tool of erasure. It literally exists so the government could mathematically subtract us out of existence over time.
Think of it like this;
instead of letting Indigenous communities define ourselves, the U.S. government came in and said, âYour Indigeneity is only valid if we can quantify it like livestock breeding papers.â It was meant to break apart families, stop us from passing on identity and land rights, and eventually reach a point where they could say, âSee, there are no real Indigenous people left! So we don't need to think about them!"
It weaponizes nebulous and often finicky genetics against culture, community, lived experience, etc.
It ignores the fact that Indigenous identity is about kinship, belonging, survival, language, tradition, and responsibility to our people.
Blood quantum turns those things into a number. A number designed to shrink until there is nothing left.
Many nations are still stuck dealing with blood quantum rules because of federal pressure and resource control, not because we chose it or approve of it.
And it harms us every single generation. It pits relatives against each other, creates disenrollment fights, and tells half of Indigenous kids they are somehow less real than their siblings because of paperwork.
It also lets the government give a 'good reason' for why we shouldn't have mixed race marriages or 'interbreed' with other races, because then the blood quantum 'goes down' and we may legally not be considered indigenous under the government anymore, which means they can deny us things like certain assistance programs, medical care, etc.
It's literally government mandated eugenics.
In short, it is is a colonial tool invented by the government to eliminate us. Which is why I gag when I say it.

Mad about politics again

purge of 2002? of 2012? what ARE those?
Oh, how quickly the past is forgotten.Â
They are part of the reason A03 is a thing now. Not the whole reason, but part of it.Â
The Great Purges of 2002 and 2012 are when ff.net got a wild hair up their ass about THINK OF THE CHILDREN and nuked any fic posted on there that was explicit. Thousands upon thousands of nc-17 smutfics were lost.
Itâs what led to the creation of alternate hosting sites for smutty ficâŚAdultFanfiction was the one I went toâŚbut thousands of fics would never be recovered.Â
Shit like the Great Purges and the Strikethrough of Livejournal eventually led to fans banding together to create A03, which I would have absolutely KILLED for when I was 15.
ItâsâŚright on the main page.Â
I love this because I will bet you that persefv has read that bit we are all so inundated with hyperbole and advertising that says that the consumer is somehow in charge of whatever product they are shilling that we all just assumed this was another sales tactic.
But weâre not even⌠selling anythingâŚÂ *quiet sobs*
No ads. No subscriptions. No data selling.
We are the definition of âwhat it says on the tin.â
Is there any way to spread this info?Â
THE OTW WAS CREATED BY FANS SO WEâD HAVE AN ARCHIVE THAT WASNâT SUBJECT TO CORPORATE REVIEW.Â
Nonprofit, so that nobody could ever say, âthis isnât making enough money; itâs getting shut down.â (See: Geocities, Quizilla, Figment, G+.) With lawyers involved and a firm awareness of the legalities of fanfic, so nobody would decide âweâve gotten a nasty letter from a megacorporation with lawyers, so weâre hiding because we canât afford to face a lawsuit. (Jedi Hurtaholics, Trevizoâs Millennium site.) With teams, so that an argument between co-mods didnât result in the destruction of a whole archive. (Gryffindor Tower, Detention.)
AO3 IS OUR SITE.
It is by fans, for fans. Fans do all the coding. All the legal paperwork. All the abuse/tos violation complaints. Fans make all the choices about policies. Fans decide how to run the fundraisers. Fans write the blog posts. All the volunteer staff are fans; all the people who train them are fans. Fans wrangle all the tags.Â
(And the other OTW projects, too. Fans manage the entries at Fanlore. Fans run the Open Doors project. Fans publish Transformative Works and Cultures.)
EVERYONE WORKING FOR THE OTW LOVES FANDOM. Wants it to survive. Wants it to be awesome for everyone.
(Knows that it canât be awesome for everyone; some approaches to fandom just clash hard. But they strive to minimize those clashes as much as possible, because they love fandom.)Â
AO3 is not some company that decided, âweâll make a site for fanfic and thenâŚâ I donât know what people are thinking is the reason. Money? Data harvesting? Tax shelter? Amusement and pity?
Nope; AO3 was fans saying, âLivejournal sucks; weâre tired of this fucked-up ârebuild every three yearsâ garbage; WE NEED TO OWN THE DAMN SERVERS.â
Thatâs the âof our ownâ part of the name. OTW isnât a âthemâ running the site âfor us.â Itâs âusâ making places for âusâ to share what we love with others of âus.âÂ
In 2025, weâre up to 15 million works.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Have you seen the new movie? It's on library. It's literally on the library. It's on library without ads. It's literally on your local public library. You can probably ask for it on your library. Dude it's on your library. It's in the original case too. It's on library. You can watch it at the library. You can go to your local library and watch it. Register onto your local library right now. Go to your library. Dive into your library. You can watch it. It's on there. Your library has it for you. Your library has it for you.
I'll tell anyone about adblockers btw. I got ublock origin installed on the laptop at drag karaoke once because the youtube ads were driving us all insane. I told my physical therapist about it so she could fix her background music. from about 2012-2021 I essentially never saw an ad unless it was on the subway and I want everyone to be able to live like that

Thought I should make a separate post regarding this debate too.
"Do you think AO3 should ban AI generated works?"
Well, in theory, it may sound ideal. But in reality? No.
I am not a fan of AI, but "do you think AO3 should ban" never actually solves a problem. Because how can you tell what's AI and what's human made? It is extremely hard to tell, and going around accusing authors of using AI â just because you suspect they do â does more harm than good. Chances are that you're accusing real writer of being AI and ruining their day at best, making them quit writing at worst.
And the act of banning never stops something from existing. It only makes it more difficult to find or avoid. Tumblr bans porn, but you can still find porn on Tumblr. The only difference is that they're no longer tagged as porn, which means you're more likely to stumble upon them because blocking the tags no longer works when they are not tagged as porn.
The same applies to AI generated works on AO3. For now they are tagged as "AI generated". You can avoid them if you don't want them.
Once they're banned, people will no longer tag them as AI, which means you have more chance of unknowingly reading and leaving kudos on AI.
Also, no, unless an author says "this was written by AI" you cannot tell for sure if something was written by AI. Em dashes aren't evidence of AI. Long and overly described paragraphs aren't evidence of AI. Real human writers do write like this and AI was trained to mimic real humans' works.
If AO3 bans AI, you will be dealing with witch-hunting, genuine writers getting wrongly accused of using AI left and right, and AI works no longer being tagged as AI (meaning they are almost impossible to spot and avoid)
