Qin Wanyue: Unsung Villain of Proud Immortal Demon Way
I know, I know, most of you are going, âwhat?â (and some, perhaps, âwho?â). Letâs just say that the interplay between several layers of narrative was one of my favorite elements in SVSSS, and I am delighted to share some of my findings! As you may have guessed from my enthusiasm, those are some messed-up findings, so: content warning for discussion of fictional sexual assault, though nothing that wasnât described or alluded to in the novel â ie, if youâve read the entire novel and were fine, nothing in here should extend past your tolerance.
But thatâs for the latter half of this meta. First, some context on what I mean by âlayers of narrativeâ: SVSSS, belonging as it does to transmigration-into-a-novel subgenre, includes both âthe original novelâ PIDWâs story and the altered by transmigration story (which I will be referring to as âthe new storyâ going forth, because while the new story kinda is SVSSS itself, it also really isnât). The situation is further complicated by mentions of âthe original outlineâ version of PIDW, the possibility of characters from âthe original novelâ crossing into âthe new storyâ and being influenced by it (as per extras), the fact that âthe new storyâ is still a story, and the limitations that imposes on characters and events, and, of course, our primary narrator Shen Yuan|Qingqiuâs unreliability â both regarding the events happening to himself, in the new story, and the events of the original PIDW.
Keeping in mind the interrelations between those layers is an angle that I found very rewarding for analyzing this novel â which leads me to writing this meta about a character who has⌠two, I think⌠in-person appearances in all of SVSSS. Qin Wanyueâs lack of page-time â and relevance â in âthe new storyâ makes sense, given the shift in events and narrative roles brought on by Luo Binghe falling for Shen Qingqiu, demoting her from a prominent love interest to background extra. But I believe that we, as readers, were largely misled about her relevance in PIDWâs story â because Shen Yuan, bless his heart, has all the facts but fails to put them together. Not in the âoh he is so obliviousâ way, but rather in a combination of âeffects of toxic masculinityâ way and âlack of critical engagement with reading materialâ way. Which are two topics that the novel delves into with some regularity, so hey, makes sense! Anyway, time for us to use our critical thinking and excavate the clues MXTX left us.
(cont. under cut)
Going through the English edition of SVSSS as Iâm doing now, you will notice that Qin Wanyue is often referred to as âgraceful and subdued little shimeiâ. If you then check the character guide, you will see that âgraceful and subduedâ is actually a direct translation of her name ĺŠç´ WÇnyuÄ (baidu offers a slightly different tl, âgraceful and restrainedâ, if thatâs of interest to anyone). Shen Yuan|Qingqiu appears to take that as a charactonym, but should he really? It may be difficult to judge for the PIDW version of Qin Wanyue (as she is described to us only by the very narrator we are questioning at the moment), but âthe new storyâ version of her does get some interiority in text, despite a limited number of appearances. And yes, in presentation, Qin Wanyue appears to live up to her name; but pay closer attention, and a different characterization peeks through.
(English edition, vol. 1, page 216)
This excerpt, for example, paints a character who could at most charitable reading be described as calculative. Or even, given the larger context of the scene, willing to use other people (Luo Binghe, in this case) as stepping stones to achieve her own goals.
Or how about this moment:
(Ibid., page 217)
The text plainly notes her actions to be "wildly insincere". So Qin Wanyue is also willing to use textbook manipulation techniques to make people do her bidding act as she wants them to act.
And the last excerpt I want to note, which I would not consider characteristic on its own but which feels somewhat telling in context:
(Ibid., page 219)
Now, obviously, itâs not a bad thing for a character to have mental fortitude! Itâs just that the phrasing here, combined with previous instances, feels rather deliberate. She was smart enough to not faint for real. It almost makes it seem like even her reaction to her sisterâs fate was in part performativeâŚ
Though, for the sake of fairness, I will consider that last conjecture questionable, and work off the first two excerpts â which are just enough to conclude that Qin Wanyue is, well, quite ruthless for someone whose image is that of a âquiet and niceâ (or âgraceful and subduedâ, lol) one.
âââ
Now, this is her characterization during the Immortal Alliance Conference in âthe new storyâ. And although some butterfly effect of Shen Yuanâs presence has already reached these characters â think Qin Wanrongâs fate in the absence of love interestâs plot armor â it is largely implied throughout the novel that the characterization in âthe new storyâ, absent transmigrator meddling, is consistent with PIDWâs characterization, even if PIDW never delved into the reasoning behind charactersâ actions â think Yue Qingyuan and Shen Jiu. So it is reasonable to posit that PIDWâs Qin Wanyue has the same personality as the one we see on-page in SVSSS. Why is that important? Well⌠hereâs where that content warning from the beginning comes in.
After all, the most memorable thing about the original Qin Wanyue (according to our unreliable primary narrator) is:
(Ibid., page 213)
Thing is, most of the details about this plot point come up much earlier in the novel, when Shen Qingqiu complains talks about Without a Cure poison's, well, cure â so thereâs a 70-page separation between the girl in the story and Qin Wanyue we meet.
(And in case anyone doubted the girl in question is the very same Qin Wanyue: please note the epithets in the following fragment and compare to the fragment quoted above)
(Ibid., page 142)
So, to refresh our memories, hereâs a description of the key (to this meta) point of that storyline:
(Ibid., page 143, excerpt 2/3)
Now, this description on its own might not register as questionable, though I must note that the use of an expression "pushed down" usually implies a modicum of dubiousness in the consent. And the very next paragraph could be well taken to support this reading:
(Ibid., excerpt 3/3)
âConsent under pressure of fulfilling a last wishâ is the very definition of dubious, is it not?
Though, of course, there's another possible reading â which is the one our narrator seems to subscribe to, given his choice of phrase "show of resistance" â that given the rules of (PIDW's) genre, Luo Binghe wasn't actually all that reluctant. Isnât it just the straight dude's wish fulfillment, to have a pretty girl rush to take his virginity? Itâs not that deep, and so such⌠But, well, Iâm afraid Iâm gonna have to go ahead and argue with Cucumber-bro about PIDW, lmao.
See, if there's anything SVSSS is very clear about, it's that the characters have interiority, even if it isnât directly brought up. While the tropes and genre conventions do apply, characterâs decisions are not explained by those only â again, think Shen Jiu: yes, his role is that of a scum villain, but his actions follow from his backstory and personality; though that leads to him fulfilling the aforementioned role, the role is not an explanation on its own. With that in mind, when analyzing the situation with original Luo Binghe and Qin Wanyue, it's crucial to consider them not as 'the stallion novel protagonist' and 'his love interest', but rather as people with their own motivations and thoughts and journeys.
I must note: while we only have Shen Yuan|Qingqiuâs description of the scene to go off of, and he, a) does think of it in terms of 'the stallion novel protagonist' and 'his love interest' and b) is fairly flippant about consent issues as present in PIDW (which comes for him later in the narrative), â but even with that, he still senses enough of PIDW Luo Bingheâs discomfort to bring it up in his recount. Which, imo, is on its own quite telling of how this scene went in PIDW.
Now, working off that âcharacters always have interiorityâ framework, there's another bit that begins to stick out:
(Ibid., excerpt 1/3)
Of course, this could be taken as a joke about m/f relationships in media â they exchanged glances and then jumped into bed, y'know, the thing many of us complain about â but it starts to look suspicious if we think of those characters as, well, people. What, âexchanging glancesâ was the extent of it, and then one party âpushed downâ the plain-text "reluctant" other party? Begins to smell of bad things happening, doesnât it?
And then, of course, we should additionally consider the characterization we worked out for Qin Wanyue in the beginning of this meta: that she is willing to prioritize her own goals and desires over those of others (specifically Luo Binghe's even, in both cases) and not above using manipulation to get her wayâŚ
Now, look, Qin Wanyue in PIDW is in her last days, and I'm not gonna put on a tin foil hat and say ~maybe she isn't~ just because she is shown to be manipulative. I believe she is fatally poisoned, and I even believe that she doesnât mean for her actions to be an assault. Still doesn't excuse coercive rape though. Just the same as Shen Jiu's horrible past doesn't excuse child abuse.
âââ
And I do think the comparison between those two is apt, circling back to the title of this meta. I believe Qin Wanyue's actions towards Luo Binghe in the original story, and especially the way they influenced him, put her on par with the titular scum villain; yet her part in PIDW Luo Binghe's blackening is overlooked by both in-story narrator and the novelâs fandom.
But let us trace the underpinnings of the story we are told by Shen Yuan|Qingqiu.
For PIDW Luo Binghe, the Immortal Alliance Conference is significant in a way it isn't for the new story's Binghe â as it's the first time in years PIDW Binghe was able to leave Shen Jiu's sphere of influence. I'm sure thatâs not news for anyone that abuse messes with a person's perception; thus, realizing that mistreatment isnât the norm can be a significant step towards healing. So, PIDW Binghe meets a bunch of new people at the Conference, and realizes they do not treat him the way Shen Jiu and the disciples of Qing Jing do. These people treat him as a cool new friend! For once, he is not ostracized! Shen Yuan|Qingqiu is surprised to see that new storyâs Binghe doesn't go to play in the creek with the group, but he fails to take into account that this camaraderie is not a breath of fresh air for him in a way it was for the original Binghe. New story's Binghe has the experience to realize the group's less-than-noble intentions, even if he isn't ruthless enough to ditch them; but does the same go for PIDW's Binghe? When those people treat him just so much better than what he's used to?
And the thing is, even though those people weren't sincere to him, this could've been the first step in Luo Binghe's recovery, the reality check that would combat Shen Jiu's influence on his mentality⌠if not for Qin Wanyue's actions. Essentially, the trust and goodwill he extended toward those new friends of his resulted in him getting taken advantage of, becoming just another proof of the worldâs callousness for him.
Now, the way Shen Jiu shaped Luo Binghe is something of a common understanding in the fandom â that Luo Bingheâs new persona post-blackening is molded after his scum villain master. But I want you to consider those mentions of original Luo Binghe playing fast and loose with consent, and notice a direct causality between that and his first experience with intimacy at Qin Wanyue's hands. And in fact, his persona may have been influenced by her just as much as Shen Jiu. If we consider for example this description, "he would wear the mask of a kind and humble gentleman" (p.29), â while this could be traced back to Shen Qingqiuâs "fair without but foul within" (p.10) characterization, doesn't it seem even more like Qin Wanyue's "graceful and subdued" presentation? Or how about this descriptionâŚ
(Ibid., page 12)
âŚas compared to Qin Wanyue pretending to be "lovable and pitiable" to manipulate Luo Binghe and continue using him to her ends (see p.217 excerpt in the beginning)?
In this way, doesn't it seem like Qin Wanyue played almost as big a role in shaping PIDW Luo Binghe as the titular scum villain did? So why shouldn't she get the recognition as an important villain of PIDW's story?
âââ
Lastly, I wanted to mention a certain little detail for symbolism-lovers in the crowd. As we know, Shen Yuan|Qingqiu uses lotus as a descriptor for Luo Binghe â 'white lotus' in his youth and 'black lotus' later. 'White lotus' in particular is a common expression to describe characters who are exceptionally innocent (it can have derogatory connotation, implying character is so innocent they are stupid, though our Shen Qingqiu is of course using it rather fondly). So, in SVSSS, white lotus can be considered a symbol of Luo Bingheâs innocence(broad definition).
Now, remember what the spiritual plant Luo Binghe picked for Qin Wanyue is called? I'll remind you, "Thousand-Leaves Fresh-Snow Lotus". Fresh-Snow, in other words, white. And what happens to that white lotus? It gets eaten raw by Qin Wanyue. Welp, symbolism!
Additionally, the benefits of the lotus making their way back to Luo Binghe can be compared with the way he adopts the traits of his villains, Shen Jiu and Qin Wanyue, and eventually turns the situation to his advantage. While he does not take outright revenge on Qin Wanyue (there are several explanations for that, on different layers of narrative, but all boil down to toxic masculinity being incompatible with understanding male victims of rape exist) - well, doesn't dragging her into a three-digit harem built by the very methods she taught him kind of count as reversing their fortunes?
I'm struck by just how much Shen Jiu's abuse of Luo Binghe is an elaborate self-harm ritual.
In ch 74 Shen Jiu seethes about how Luo Binghe has so much and how jealous he is of him. But I really don't think it's straightforward jealousy that drives his actions
For one, the peaks are filled with entitled young masters from noble families with much more to envy than homeless orphan Binghe, and he never treated them like that. But even moreso, the things he's jealous of are things that Shen Jiu also has. Or rather... had.
He's mad about Binghe calling his adoptive mother his dearest person? Well. Young Shen Jiu, at age ten, also had a dearest person. Someone who might not have been rich and powerful enough to ease his suffering, but who loved him and would do anything for him. Young Shen Jiu had Qi-ge.
He's mad about Binghe's amazing cultivation potential? Well. Shen Jiu, despite arriving much later than the optimal time to cultivate and having his foundation warped by demonic cultivation, somehow still managed to become an immortal peak lord of the world's most powerful cultivation sect. He's that powerful with everything stacked against him, imagine what his full potential must have looked like.
He doesn't hate Luo Binghe for these things because it sets him apart from Shen Jiu. He hates him because he's exactly like Shen Jiu... except for one crucial difference. That he got to the sect on time.
He's who Shen Jiu would have been if Qi-ge had come back for him.
He's Shen Jiu without the betrayal, without the corrupted cultivation, without the years of horrific abuse spent falsely hoping for help that would never come.
And that can't stand. Shen Jiu cannot witness what he could have had if only Qi-ge had kept his promise. He needs himself and everyone too similar to him to be doomed from the beginning, because otherwise he might start thinking about what ifs and he can't afford that. And so he does to Luo Binghe everything that was done to him. He becomes Binghe's Wu Yanzi, Qiu Jianluo, and Yue Qi* all wrapped into one. Singlehandedly, he turns Binghe into Shen Jiu.
And just like Shen Jiu, Binghe eventually snaps and razes the whole place to the ground.
(*well, the version of Yue Qi that exists in Shen Jiu's head, anyway. The promise of salvation that never comes. The person you'd thought would save you but who left you in hell instead.)
Ning Yingying with a greatsword is so natural to me I forget it's not real and they all have the same basic slim swords. I can imagine young yingying with such clarity struggling to even swing something so heavy and needing to stop after 30 seconds because her sword is like half her weight but she refuses to get a normal sword and shen jiu lets her do whatever the fuck she wants.
She's a bumbling idiot who constantly falls over when the weight of her sword gets too heavy for her and half the time she almost kills someone losing control of it. Then when she's grown up she can handle it like it weighs nothing and everyone is so scared of this cute woman with her hundred pound sword that can break apart the hardest stone with one swing
i need to find an mxtx fan well versed in traditional chinese art/literature to consult with me about like. flower symbolism and traditional clothes for this cosplay D,,x
cause i'm out here like, dying over "BUT WHICH FLOWER WOULD BE BETTER FOR LUO BINGHE???" (choices from; peony (iirc associated with rulers) lotus (gray/white/black lotus imagery from text) and chrysanthemum (it's a sex joke but ALSO:) four gentlemen style where if sqq is bamboo (summer) then would luo (icy river) binghe be winter? or would we consider that to be bingge and bingmei (a la gray lotus) to be autumn??? ALSO GIVEN THE AUTUMN IN SHEN QINGQIU?? OR SHOULD I USE BAMBOO TO INDICATE POSTCANON BLISS???????)
and "is it considered acceptable or gauche to mix and match botanical designs when building an outfit?" (like should u only have a one-flower or motif theme???) or "only if they are the same season?" (bc i have a lotus-pattern brocade for a top layer) (or does it not even matter? bc xianxia is not historical?)
anyway i have so many questions that are hard to find answers to in an english-speaking web search. /dies

I've had a thought. With the current events of the Dandadan manga there's been some points that haven't been clear. They talk about obtaining yokai powers, but also seem to include Momo and Seiko's powers. I had been guessing that they're using "yokai powers" as an umbrella term for spiritual powers generally. Others have taken it to mean that Momo's powers were actually from some yokai and not even she knew. But I thought of something else.
What if it's not an umbrella term, nor has Momo obtained her power from an outside source? What if psychic powers ARE yokai powers? Not that psychic powers come from some yokai the psychic met at some point and gained the powers of. Just that the only difference between psychic powers and yokai powers is the word you choose to use.
Because what is a psychic? It's a person who developed spiritual powers. And what is a yokai? It's a ghost who developed spiritual powers. And what is a ghost? A person who has died.
What if the only difference is when the individual developed their powers? What if most people simply don't experience the kind of thing that awakens their powers until after death, or at the moment of death, but they had the potential all along?
If this were the case, and you knew this to be the case, then the exact name you choose to use, psychic or yokai, might not really matter to you. But you might still specify something beyond just "powers" if you also knew about things like Serpoian Serpogrametry and if that works differently. Perhaps your special knives can't take that. You might even come to consider humans and yokai as one and the same. Especially if you yourself weren't human or yokai. They're all the same species, just in different parts of their life cycle. It'd be like differentiating between a caterpillar and a butterfly when all you really care about is what species it is. You might as well start specifying "blonde powers" and "redheaded powers" and "brunette powers" for all the difference it makes to you. Or "teen powers" and "adult powers". Those differences really don't matter to you.
So Momo and Seiko DO have powers that they developed themselves with their own spiritual power. But in the eyes of someone like Saint Germain they're still all "yokai powers". To Saint Germain humans are just larval yokai, and all powers are yokai powers.
not to tell people what to do but as someone whoâs been in fandom since i was like twelve, i promise that the only good fandom experience involves limiting your friend circle to, like, seven people. when youâre in a city, you donât make friends with every douchebag on the street. stringently vet the people who are allowed to influence you. in an age of people and companies constantly demanding your attention and energy, your happiness will grow best like flowers in a greenhouse in a terrible city; a contained, curated space allows happiness to flourish. keep it small and donât be sorry to tell people to stay the fuck out of your greenhouse.

The Policy & Abuse committee is posting a weekly spotlight series explaining some of the most common violations of the #AO3 Terms of Service. This week's spotlight is on offensive content, which does not violate our TOS but is frequently reported. Read more at: https://otw-news.org/2p97wfvk
If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
Reblog to save for later. Your WIP will thank you.

It gets betterâthe guy is deaf, and he taught his cat the sign for âfood.â So the catâs not just saying âput that in my mouth,â itâs actually signing
Not only that, but if you notice at the beginning, the cat *gets the manâs attention* as any person who wanted to talk to a deaf/hoh individual would (well, and vice versa IME). Iâve done sign since I was 5, and generally, w/o eye contact initially, you wave a hand or lightly touch the arm (if thatâs ok with the person youâre trying to converse with, of course).Â
Generally, adult cats meow mostly to humans, but this cat has figured out thatâs not going to work and has adapted. Animal companions! They are INCREDIBLE.
