Seeking Study Participants!
Hello Tumblr! I'm an anthropology student who could really use your help!
I'm doing a semester-long project where I'm looking at pseudonymous interactions, and how relationships are formed through the masked depths of the internet. To do this, I have made a Discord server, and am looking for people to join!
You are probably thinking that this is a bit sketchy sounding, and to be honest I don't blame you, so let me tell you a bit more about what you'd be getting into!
Basically, this server will be rather average, I don't have a particular focus for it at the moment, it's just a space to get to know people and have fun conversations! If you decide to participate in the study (and yes, you can join the server without becoming a participant) then I'll be taking a general look at how you interact with myself and other participants i.e. what kinds of greetings do people use, what kinds of questions do people ask each other and how, etc. No names or specific data would be noted for anyone who participates to this degree, this would be to get a general overview!
A few weeks in, I would ask if anyone is willing to do an interview and/or a survey about their experience on the internet. At this time I don't have a list of questions prepared to give many examples, but they would revolve around how people interact in an anonymous and/or pseudonymous setting. They might be how and why you decide to reach out to someone, or what leads to what you would consider a stable friendship, or other similar things. None of them would be looking for personal information or anything that could be used to identify the participants. In fact, the survey will be done completely anonymously, and with the interview only I would be aware of the online alias of the participant. Beyond that, the only ones to see the study as it progresses would be myself, my professor, and my assigned peer review classmate, and all of us are required to keep it confidential.
Once the semester is over and the study is complete, participants may receive a copy if they want one, so that they can see what they contributed to.
