Because cis straight men as a group are weak.

Horror and Monster fiction are typically enjoyed by outsiders of society who are “othered” by the very society they live in. So when expectations of femininity are thrust upon women and girls, and they cannot meet those unreasonable expectations, they’re considered “weird,” “ugly,” “spinsters” or more recently, “crazy cat ladies.” They sympathize, empathize, or even identify with the monster. Cis-women in particular have been taught for centuries that sure, your arranged marriage might not be to a man of your choosing (not attractive, older, etc) but it’s what’s inside that counts! After all, “Beauty and the Beast” was written in the 1700’s for that very reason, for reassurance in a fate that was difficult to escape.

Men typically aren’t typically taught that lesson. Society celebrates a pretty wife as a reward for the man.

Except for Johnny Storm. He’s a real one.
