A thought after seeing yet another post from a shipper about how "delusional" people who ship differently from them are, because from *their* evidence, it's "obvious" who a certain person is "really" in love with:
"Love" means different things to different people, and is not as simple as "romantic" vs "familial" vs "platonic". BTW, Plato believed that the nonsexual love between two men could be *deeper and more sacred* than the love between a man and woman with a sexual relationship, so platonic doesn't mean "just friends". People in platonic relationships can love each other more than they love their spouse, or they can get married themselves and not have sex. Anyway, sure, we can add "just friends" to the list -- so long as we remember that love is a spectrum with gradients between these types, and including more besides. Also, we can love people in more than one way, and those ways can fluctuate in intensity.
More importantly, let's remember that everyone has their own love language, so what reads as familial love to one person, can read as romantic to another person, etc -- especially when it comes to differing cultures. People have different boundaries on what's acceptable between friends, for example -- like, I want to cuddle with friends, but few of my friends are into that. Sometimes sexually active people don't want to be cuddly outside of the bedroom even with their partner!
Odds are, you ship pairings that express love in the way YOU want to give and/or receive love -- and so do other people. Sometimes that means another pairing with one mutual character with your ship, represents what they want out a relationship more than your own ship does, and vice versa. And that's okay! Live and let live! And bear in mind that an author is entitled to see the relationships they write differently from how YOU see them.
Most important of all, if you're shipping real people, remember that those people may want something different out of a romantic relationship than you do, and so may feel differently about the relationship in question than you do. It's fine to enjoy their relationship, but it's one thing to have your own personal interpretation, and quite another to make declarations and fight people over it. What if a person in your ship is actually romantically involved, by their personal definition of love, with someone else than whom YOU ship them with -- I imagine it doesn't feel to great to learn that ones fans are *against* one's relationship! (Kind of like being gay, and one's family saying you should be straight.) It probably doesn't feel to good to read that people think the person you love should be with someone else, either -- especially if that person is a friend! Don't hurt real people like that!!
Yes, I ship a couple of real-life pairings. But whether or not they have sex together is none of my business, and my support of them is not contingent upon whether or not they are the most important people in one another's lives. (And really, they could have several different people who are "most important" in different ways, or people they love equally and still deeply.) I ship because it makes me happy to see people care for each other. I wish the pair well, regardless of the nature of their relationship. (It's just, if they're in the closet, I wish they didn't have to be!)
In the end, please don't go trying to impose your headcanons on real people. Keep your minds open and tolerant to other possibilities, for your sake as well as for the sake of those you ship (who are real people with their own lives, and whose *existence* -- even when they are actors!! -- is not about being characters in other people's fantasies; they exist for themselves, not you).
Ok⌠ok I just had an idea. What if Crowley and Aziraphale feels no physical sexual attraction to each otherâs corporeal form? Sure they both think human bodies look nice and all but it still feels like theyâre just wearing a skin suit. When they see each otherâs naked human form they donât have any shame or feel any arousal. You can see that they both act pretty chill in Eden where both Adam and Eve were walking around butt naked and never questioned why Adam and Eve were naked in the first place. Plus, the both of them donât really have a good grasps on human biology and donât follow human gender/sexual norms. However, they are attracted to each othersâ  true celestial/demonic form!Â
Their true form. Like hot damn! What a terrifying but sexy forms! <3

(Involves WWXâs thoughts â and occasionally LWJâs â during scenes from many of the post-flashback episodes, and includes a few âmissing scenesâ.)
Snippet: Wuxian then met up with Lan Zhan at their assigned guest room, settling down to start the next phase of their little spy game, where Wuxian was to put his mind into a paper doll, in order to sneak about. They knew it would be dangerous, but Wuxian had had total faith that his body would be safe under Lan Zhanâs watch. After finishing preparing the paper doll for occupation, Wuxian looked up at Lan Zhan â and had a sudden flash of memory.
One that came with a mischievous impulse.
Lan Wangji had once insisted that the forehead ribbon of a member of the Lan Clan was sacred â only oneâs parents, children, or spouse could touch it. And yet, in the cave behind Cold Pond only a short time later, when Wuxian was under threat from a trap laid for outsiders, Lan Zhan had actually wrapped his ribbon around Wuxianâs wrist, so that the spell would see Wuxian as a member of the Lan Clan too! And in the cave of Xuanwu, although Lan Wangji had certainly been upset when Wuxian had yanked the ribbon off his head to make a splint, he hadnât actually fought Wuxian over it â nor had he been upset when Wuxian touched it again to put it back on Lan Zhanâs head. With Lan Zhan being more tolerant these days, and considering they werenât in a life-or-death situation at this very moment, how would Lan Zhan react if Wuxian touched the ribbon now?
Taking a swing of alcohol to fortify himself, Wuxian then pretended like he was a bit drunk. That way, if his plan was poorly received, Lan Zhan would hopefully just brush it off as a drunken foolâs antics. Feeling a little giddy (maybe he actually was a little drunk?) and hiding a smile, Wuxian sent his mind into the doll. Once within it, he slowly climbed up Lan Zhanâs arm and face â giving the man every opportunity, as Wuxian went, to stop him â to play with Lan Zhanâs forehead ribbon.
And for a moment, Lan Zhan let him.
The moment passed, Lan Zhan gently chiding Wuxian not to kid him. There was infinite patience in his reaction, no hint of anger â not really even annoyance! But ⌠âkidâ how, precisely? Did Lan Zhan think Wuxian was making fun of him, or did he think that Wuxian was ⌠well, flirting? Wuxian seemed to remember, from that time in the cave of Xuanwu, that Lan Zhan disapproved of flirting if one didnât mean it.
Wuxian also suddenly remembered that, although theyâd been talking at the time about that girl Wuxian had saved, Wuxian had replied that he hadnât flirted with Lan Zhan anyway! But was that actually even true?
And was Wuxian flirting now?
More importantly, did he mean it?

Snippet:Â For what seemed an eon after the death of his body, Ben barely knew the concept of self, of individuality. The particles of the universe pulled at him, smothered him, and it was all he could do to hold on to his name. It helped that, after a while, he heard someone -- a few someones? -- calling that name. He reached out to the call as if it were a rope (though he didn't know the actual word for rope, nor any other). The call helped him pull himself free from the quicksand of the universe, and with what felt like glacial slowness, his thoughts gradually grew more complex. His focus began to narrow, the source of the call getting more and more defined. And then, he had another word besides his name:
Mother.
With that word, her face became crystal clear, smiling radiantly. His existence was suddenly a chaos of joy and grief. He would have cried if he had eyes, but he wouldn't have been able to say whether the tears were happy ones or not, even if he had the words. "It's okay, Ben, I've got you," his mother soothed.

Me, a clown: AH yes! Let me ship these two men who had insane amounts of sexual tension and look at each other like theyâre married! Theyâll get together Iâm certain!
The show writers: pffft theyâre BROTHERS, not romantic AT all- LOOK they have GIRLFRIENDS
Before I say anything, let me preface this by saying I too ship a lot of male characters together sexually (including some of the same ships the OP has in their tags), so I am not at all dissing that -- I empathize. I fully acknowledge that queerbaiting is a major problem, and am not trying to shut down that conversation. And I understand that the OP may already know of what I'm about to talk about, so this is not directed at the OP -- I just want to talk about something that I don't see talked about often enough, and it's on-topic with the above post, so ....
True Platonic love is NOT "just friends". Plato believed that the non-sexual love between two men was deeper and more sacred than the sexual love between a husband and a wife. So a male character having a female love interest does not mean that their and the woman's relationship is the more important one in the man's life (or that a male love interest for a woman is more important than a woman's best female friend)! He can still love the other guy more than her! :) (I totally interpreted Sherlock/John that way -- and honestly, I think Mary did too.)
And even when there's NO female love interest, but the narrative still doesn't "go there" with the male characters, let's not forget that being asexual is a thing that could use more representation! Being ace does not automatically = being aromantic, after all (not that there's anything wrong with that), and so romantic love does not automatically = sexual love.
So showrunners can't negate our ships / turn them "brotherly" just by adding a girlfriend. :)
On Shipping ....
Okay, due to two conversations on this recently, I need to talk about this, because itâs really sticking in my craw right now, LOL! Permit me a moment to be really pendantic, and feel free to completely disagree -- this is just me pleading my case.
Shipper comes from ârelationshipperâ, a term that, to the best of my knowledge, seemed to have been coined by the X-Files fandom back in the late 90s (at least, thatâs when I remember coming across it). It means, quite simply, a fan of a relationship. While shippers are frequently fans of non-canon pre-marriage romantic relationships, it does NOT exclude:
- canon relationships
- married relationships
- or non-sexual relationships
It technically doesnât even exclude non-romantic relationships, nor rivalries / relationships of enmity (although those are, as far as I've seen, pretty rare).
THESE ARE ALL STILL RELATIONSHIPS. If you are a fan of ANY of these, congratulations -- youâre a shipper!
It would be rather silly to say you can't ship a canon couple -- if not, it would mean if a couple does become canon, then people would have to stop calling themselves shippers of that couple. Or that fans of a couple that was always canon .. arenât shippers.
They arenât a fan of a relationship?
Like, what?Â
So, what, Mulder / Scully shippers stopped being shippers because Mulder/Scully became canon? Huh?
Similarly, It would be rather silly to say you can't ship a married couple -- if not, it would mean if a non-married couple gets married, then people would have to stop calling themselves shippers of that couple. Again, saying that they arenât a fan of a relationship? Like, what?Â
Let me tell you why iâs a MONUMENTALLY bad idea to do that.
Over a decade ago, Marvel broke up Peter Parker and Mary Jane. At a panel I attended, Joe Quesada said that this was because âMarriage is boring.â And I have lost track of how many times men have said to me (and itâs ALWAYS men who have said this to me, in patronising / snide tones), âYou only like the UST -- as soon as these characters get together, you're bored / you don't care anymore!â (And then theyâre always pointing to the ratings drop for Moonlighting, as if that wasn't a actually matter of the writers of that show not being creative enough to figure out what to do next, or the problem of building their entire characterisation on a foundation of âWill they, or wonât they?â).
Wow.
WOW.
Way to tell fans (especially women) how we think or feel, and refuse to listen to or believe us when we try to tell you otherwise. I suspect that, at least in some cases, they don't WANT to write deeper relationships (or don't know how), so they place the blame of it not happening on us, rather than their own lack of interest or ability. (Like, dudes, itâs okay for you to just, you know, not like something. Donât fucking gaslight us about our OWN tastes.)
And gee, how do their wives feel? Maybe their wives should divorce them, if married life is so unappealing!
Anyway, funny how so many fanfics feature couples AFTER theyâve had sex and / or gotten married -- the story we so seldom get from âofficialâ media because they THINK we don't want it, despite the wealth of evidence saying otherwise. It behooves us (well, most of us) to stress to content-creators know that shippers often actually DO WANT to see relationships develop beyond âthe hook-upâ, so that they create better-crafted stories in generals (or at least understand why their audience left, and thus be able to make a better-informed decision of what to do about it).
But yesterday, I ran into the opposite. Someone posted a scenario in which a character said they shipped two other characters. A second character said that they did NOT ship the pair -- then explained that they SUPPORTED the pairing, because the pair were âfucking married!â Whether the OP intended it this way or not, it just came off to me like âshippingâ was considered an inferior or incorrect act (as fandom in general and womenâs interest in particular are far too often treated), and "supportâ of a couple that has made the leap to marriage is next-level / superior. I was told by the OP that marriage had a different chemistry. (Maybe I'm way off base, but I felt like the original post was saying that shipping / liking non-married ships is like being a teenager crushing over a guy in Tiger Beat, but supporting a married couple is a more sophisticated and mature sort of fandom, LOL!)
Anyway, chemistry of married couples is different from that of non-married couple? I guess It CAN be seen that way, but Iâd say itâs more like individual couples can have very different chemistry from other couples in general, regardless of their respective marital statuses. But, for argument's sake, letâs say married and unmarried couples are different animals, so to speak; Iâd argue that itâs still entirely appropriate to use the word ship in regards to a married couple -- thatâs not actually the place to be making the distinction!Â
Letâs let âshipperâ stay just meaning âsomeone who is a fan of a relationship.â Let it be an all-encompassing term for a person celebrating what they enjoy from the spectrum of human interaction. Let it include platonic* relationships -- thereâs plenty of room for, say, BOTH the people who see Sherlock and John as lovers, AND the people who see them as deep friends with a non-sexual relationship (I personally love both notions!) -- really, the latter is what an ace relationship is, right? So letâs not exclude that!!
We can always add qualifiers explaining precisely what kind of relationship we mean when give our fanworks to the world -- thatâs what tags are for.
*Plato believed that the epitome / holiest of love, actually beyond that of love between a man and a woman, was non-sexual love between men. So no, âplatonicâ does NOT actually mean "just friendsâ.
BUT, I would accept shippers who DO like characters being âjust friendsâ too -- thatâs STILL A RELATIONSHIP. (I just havenât really come *across* people feeling passionately about a pair who are âjust friendsâ, LOL!) My personal ship list:Â https://wolfenm-shipper.tumblr.com/ships
The Untamed: Wangxian With Bunnies by WolfenMÂ
#2 pencil, black and white coloured pencils, and black sharpie, with post-wortk / colouring in Photoshop Elements. I used a few different photos refs (including stills from gifs, LOL!) Xiao Zhan as Wei Wuxian / Wei Ying / The Yiling Patriarch, and Wang Yibo as Lan Wangji / Lan Zhan / Hanguang Jun, of The Untamed / Chen Qing Ling, a Chinese drama based on the novel Mo Dao Zu Shi. The heart of the show is the relationship between these two characters (a romance; while the show is never explicit about it, the book is). As âcultivatorsâ, they fight various manifestations of the dead, and other creatures, and also deal with deadly politics between clans. (Seeing them with bunnies is a running theme.) This amazing 50-ep series, currently on Netflix (with a 20-ep version that focuses on âWangxianâ on YouTube), has become my fave series to date, with this pair as my current OTP! I hate drawing hands. *whimper* And when I went to draw Yiboâs nose and lips, I realised that the image wasnât clear enough (thatâs what I get for using gifs), so I had to hunt down a higher-rez image that was the same pose, which ⌠well, I couldnât find one that was *quite* right. XD I hope I got it close enough, LOL! I think I need more practice drawing these two. A LOT more. *evil grin* Seriously, though, this was *supposed* to be just a *sketch* / line-art for Ostara (the bunny-themed holiday which inspired this; I started drawing it that day). My muse is trying to kill me.

all right guys, letâs have a conversation about soulmates
because Iâm a nerd who majored in ancient China and still canât let it go
okay so we all know that wangxian invented romance, but letâs talk a bit more about the iconic dialogue in episode 25:
Lan Wangji: ä˝ ććçśćäťéşźäşş? / What kind of person do you take me for?
Wei Wuxian: ććžçśćä˝ çśĺćç˘ççĽĺˇą / I had once thought that, in my lifetime, you would be the one who knew me.
Lan Wangji: çžĺ¨äťćŻ / I still am.
Iâve seen various translations of the phrase âç˘ççĽĺˇąâ as âlifelong confidanteâ or âsoulmate,â and Iâm always so torn because these are both fine translations but like, not quite there

Lan Zhan.
This show? A never ending series of my favorite tropes. Soulmates, friends to lovers, hurt/comfort, take me instead⌠There are so MANY good ones, I swear. This scene though? THIS FUCKING SCENE?! This takes the cake.
Lan Zhanâs absolutely lethal when he wants to be and yet⌠All that little bitch Meng Yao had to do to defeat him was threaten his partnerâs life and man⌠No wonder Wei Ying begs him to save himself here. This is suicide. Look at them. In his heart, Wei Ying already suspects that Lan Zhan wonât leave him behind but he has to try. He needs him to survive so he offers permission, talking about reinforcements to give him an honorable way out. Lan Zhan seals his own power away knowing they both might be killed on the spot but he canât bring himself to CARE. He wonât live without the love of his life AGAIN so he risks everything on the off chance that theyâll get lucky and find a way out together. God, they care so much about each other. I justâ
^^^^^ Also, that part (in the novel) when Meng Yao says: âHow could he not listen to me? Just think about it, Young Master Wei, his life is in my hands,â while holding the garrote to Wei WuXianâs throat but, of course, meaning Lan WangJiâs life because, of course, he does. Lan WangJi wonât live without his Wei Ying again
Letâs talk about Jaskier and Geraltâs bath scene
Specifically, these screenshots, courtesy of google, that weâve all seen a bazillion times on this website because itâs a favorite I can tell lol
So, this scene, first, let me build up with that to help me organize my thoughts because Iâm a very disjointed person lol (and I will probably insert these screenshots again later in the post when I get to my point lol)
By now, we all know this scene very well. We all go so soft at it. The whole âI want nothingâ âMaybe someone out there will want youâ âI need no one, and I donât want anyone needing meâ and then this moment, right here. âAnd yet⌠here we are.â
I think in all my stalking around the Witcher fandom so far, the general consensus is that this is basically a love confession lol, and I certainly agree. Like, Jaskier is here pouring out his heart to Geralt. And then Geralt immediately finds some way to change the subject, carefully making it so he doesnât have to answer it. Which also makes a lot of you go the âunrequited loveâ angle, which I can definitely see, as much as unrequited love hurts my heart lol.
So, I am going to try to word this better than my frantic, overly excited messages to my groupchat, but I am using those messages as a base for what Iâm saying here because I easily forget my own points lol
(Also prefacing this with, only seen the show once so far lol, and Iâm only like an hour into the first Witcher game and havenât found my kindle charger yet so I canât read the books yet (because my dad already owns at least the first one there), )
Letâs first look at how Jaskier treats Geralt, throughout the entirety of the series. He pours himself into Geralt, puts so much into their relationship (despite the fact that Geralt never even calls him a friend, refuses to even use that word for him), follows him to the ends of the earth (or, well, continent). Heâs playful, kind, friendly, and treats Geralt well.
GeraltâŚ. does not treat Jaskier the way he deserves to be treated. He does not put nearly as much into the relationship as Jaskier does (though I do believe he cares a lot for the other man, as much as he doesnât admit it, because of unspoken things/body language and certain parts of the djinn ep). He tends to even be somewhat cold to Jaskier, at times, and letâs not even mention the mountain breakup (even though that takes place after this)
But like, we know their relationship dynamic in the show. Jaskier pours himself and his warmth into Geralt, and tends to get next-to-nothing (and sometimes even mistreated) in return.
Now, back to the screenshots.
Now, like I said, weâve all seen this bit in gifs and screenshots countless times. I had too, before I stopped for a moment on a gifset (with the lighting levels raised because it wasnât this dark, which got me to notice it lol) and the meaning in this hit me like a TRUCK. At least, I assume the meaning I found was on purpose lol. I took a film class once like two/three years ago.
The main light source is behind Jaskier. Candles, I think I remember them being, obviously glowing in warm tones because thatâs what fire does lol. Thereâs some slight light source coming from behind Geralt. I donât know if itâs just on-set filler lighting so we can see the set and Jaskier, or if I forgot about there being a window or something behind Geralt to explain the slight light source (letting in the light of the moon or something)
The candles on Jaskierâs side of the room are (obviously) not shining on Jaskierâs face, since heâs not facing them, but they are shining on Geralt, lighting him up with a warm glow. Meanwhile, since thereâs no light shining from Geraltâs side of the room, Jaskierâs face is shrouded in darkness.
And when I finally realized this the symbolism hitting me like a train, I got so into it that I was literally vibrating for like three hours and would not shut up to anyone about it lol.
The warm light behind Jaskier shining on Geralt. Jaskier pours his kindness and friendship onto Geralt. Jaskier having no light shining on him, because thereâs no light coming from Geralt. Geralt gives him (little to) no affection in return.
And like, I certainly did not word this well lol. Despite being a fanfic author/aspiring novelist, I am Very Dumb and it takes me too long to word good and so Iâm just making this post without reading over it a second time because Iâm excited.
But also, for yâall with your unrequited love ideas, here is some symbolic fodder for you lol. And it hurts lol.
