I’m considering coming out to my family as non-binary, and so today I brought up the subject of non-binary gendering/transgendering with my Dad as a casual conversational topic. He’s told me that if somebody is born a boy then they “should stay a fucking boy” and not trans to a girl or be a boy some days/girl other days/genderless other days.

I told him that I think gender identity should be something one can choose for themselves, and he says that nobody thinks like that and anybody who is trans/non-binary will just be shunned by every member of society they meet. He doesn’t think that people support n-b/t communities, because he doesn’t. He says to me that not staying one’s natural gender is wrong and against the point of being born a boy/girl.

Every person who reblogs this will have their URL written in a full-size writing book and when it is full I will show it to my father to illustrate to him the amount of people who believe that being non-binary is a valid gender identity.

Pointless mini rant time

So, I am not a very, what’s the word....assertive(?) person

(-was that the right word?)

As in, I would rather do what you want to do since I’m really fine with doing anything and don’t want to make you disappointed or internally upset because I chose something you didn’t like and all that.

Or I would rather say no to when you offer me food or offer to buy me something because I feel like you’re only offering to be nice and that you’ll be upset if I say yes and I just don’t want you to waste your food or your money on me in general.

Anywho, so today my nana took my sister and I out to buy food since we’re watching her and my papa’s house for a few weeks while they’re on vacation. And she continuously asked me what I wanted to get.

Me being who I am continuously said that I was fine with anything as long as my other sister ate it as well, hoping to transfer my Nana’s attaention to my sister instead of me.

Instead she begins to go on some speech/rant like thing about how I need to be more assertive and to say I want things and do what I want even if other people don’t want to and to not shrug all the time and that I can’t be a teacher if I’m not assertive and don’t say what I want.

Which is technically true, but that’s in an entirely different context and situation where I would most likely be able to be “assertive” as she says. Teaching a class is not the same as you trying to buy me anything I glance at or touch. (Which may sound good in theory, but is really not for a person like me)

Me shrugging and saying I don’t really mind either way isn’t be not being assertive, it’s me not want to spend anymore of her money than we already are in our current situation. Or me actually not minding what we do. Or me just not being hungry if you’re offering me food. Or just not wanting to eat your food even if I am hungry.

Anyway.

She just kept pushing me and being forceful and actually dragging me towards anything I even glanced at, interpreting me glancing at it as me potentially wanting it and her needing to try and get me to say that ‘yes I want it’ even if I really don’t want it and just looked at it out of curiosity.

And while some people would enjoy this, I do not. Not even in the slightest.

She just pushed me way out of my comfort zone (sometimes literally) in a public -and very crowded- place (which I was already nervous in due to it being decently crowded) and my sister didn’t do anything to stop it cause she semi agrees with my nana and I ended up being on the verge of a small panic attack the entire time we were in the store.

Then she continued to rant about my lack of assertion to us (and my papa now) when we got back to her house.

Thankfully he doesn’t really mind my shrugging and lack of input when it comes to this stuff, so he just brushed my nana off and tried to change the subject.

But she just kept going and going, saying I needed to spend more time with her to be more assertive and it just made me really uncomfortable and awkward cause while I enjoy spending time with my nana, I do not enjoy it when she is literally pushing me out of my nice cozy bubble of indifference.

Anyway, this was just my mini rant since I can’t really talk about this to anyone, because

a) I don’t want to talk about my problems to my family and friends in real life

b) the majority of my family agrees with my nana (they’re not as forceful though) so it’d be useless

And c) I don’t want to seem like I’m ungrateful that my nana is trying to do these thing. Yes I appreciate the offers and everything, but I feel like I shouldn’t be pressured into saying yes to things I don’t want to.

Alright, I’m done now.

So, any suggestions?

So, I am in school.

And there is an option to study abroad for (at least) a term (3 months).

I would like to do it.

I have good grades, I am on track to graduation, and it shouldn’t be too financially difficult for my family (although I don’t know the details on that part yet), so I should be able to do it if my parents allow it.

But I don’t know where.

There are three options for me to go to:

1) Spain

2) Germany

3) France

I’m kind of leaning towards France since it partially involves my family history and all, but I’m not sure.

I don’t speak any of the languages in these places, not fluently or good at least, and I do not know where specifically I’d be staying.

Any suggestions?

Any pros and cons for these places?
