“Who gave you that collar?” Asked the younger one. “The Witch. For she and I are equals.” Said The First Unicorn. And The little Unicorn longed to belong to The Witch, too.

Equals

“Where is she?” thought The little Unicorn. It had been ages since The First Unicorn had climbed the spire. “Surely she will return soon.” Yet a crack of uncertainty betrayed her voice.

“It should be I beside The Witch,” the Dragon sneered. “I helped build this castle. I am one of its pillars!”

The Witch confided in The little Unicorn. Tales of the mobs, the witch hunts, The Scourge. The little Unicorn thought of her time in the Whispering Woods, and saw that The Witch hurt too.

“I am?”

“Join my menagerie!” The Witch proposed. “I am not to be collected.” Replied The First Unicorn.

The Witch was a powerful sorceress, and dazzled The little Unicorn with beautiful things. Bursts of color, conjuring, making shadows dance. “I wanna be just like you!” Delighted The little Unicorn. The First Unicorn was not so easily impressed.

The Witch

The little Unicorn had heard tales of The Witch, for she made beautiful things, and beckoned The First Unicorn on her journey to meet her. “I hate The Witch.” Said The First Unicorn. The First Unicorn hadn’t left her sanctuary for centuries. Still, she followed.

But doubts from the Whispering Woods still filled the foal’s heart. “Do you think I will make beautiful things?” She asked, and The First Unicorn replied, “I believe in you.”

When danger came, The First Unicorn defended The little one fiercely. “No harm will come to you.” Promised the guardian, and The little Unicorn felt protected.

“I know.” Said The First Unicorn.

And The First Unicorn taught her to wield her magic. She showed The little Unicorn to make flowers bloom, to summon fireflies, to glow with the sunset. The First Unicorn, lonely as she was, proclaimed “You are my child, now.” And The little Unicorn was happy.

“Who gave you that collar?” Asked the younger one. “I did. No one owns me except myself.” Said The First Unicorn

Then, there was another. The First Unicorn. While at first she was mysterious, she quickly warmed to the filly. “Finally! someone like me!” Squealed the smaller Unicorn.
