The Witch

The little Unicorn had heard tales of The Witch, for she made beautiful things, and beckoned The First Unicorn on her journey to meet her. “I hate The Witch.” Said The First Unicorn. The First Unicorn hadn’t left her sanctuary for centuries. Still, she followed.

But doubts from the Whispering Woods still filled the foal’s heart. “Do you think I will make beautiful things?” She asked, and The First Unicorn replied, “I believe in you.”

When danger came, The First Unicorn defended The little one fiercely. “No harm will come to you.” Promised the guardian, and The little Unicorn felt protected.

“I know.” Said The First Unicorn.

And The First Unicorn taught her to wield her magic. She showed The little Unicorn to make flowers bloom, to summon fireflies, to glow with the sunset. The First Unicorn, lonely as she was, proclaimed “You are my child, now.” And The little Unicorn was happy.

“Who gave you that collar?” Asked the younger one. “I did. No one owns me except myself.” Said The First Unicorn

Then, there was another. The First Unicorn. While at first she was mysterious, she quickly warmed to the filly. “Finally! someone like me!” Squealed the smaller Unicorn.

The little Unicorn set out, and not long after discovered a forest that wasn’t so friendly. “She’s not a REAL Unicorn.” Sneered the Skink, jealous of her light. Others wanted to keep her light for themselves. Whispers wrapped around her. Whispers of her treachery, her inadequacy, her failure. They kept comparing her to The Witch. Soon, the forest seemed to choke her. The little Unicorn began to doubt if she really was a Unicorn at all. Still, she followed the star.

But the Forest, as safe as it was, was lonely, and the little Unicorn had heard tale of magicians, warlocks, dragons and even… other Unicorns. Above all, she longed to share her magic with the world. “Please, Great Star, guide me to them.” She wished, quietly.

Once upon a time, a little Unciorn arrived with the dawn. She didn’t know why she was brought into the forest, and she didn’t know how to use her magic, but she knew one day she would make beautiful things.
