Another reason why the blocking system on Tumblr sucks shit is that it doesn't actually prevent people's posts from showing up on your dash.
It'll prevent posts by that person showing up when you search a tag and it'll prevent them from being able to reblog your posts or message you, but when you're just looking at posts by people you follow and someone reblogs a post from them or reblogs a chain of comments that includes the person you blocked, it's still gonna jumpscare you with their username and everything that they said.
And as many other people have pointed out it doesn't even prevent them from showing up on your For You page, in fact blocking someone will cause their posts to show up in there more often because the algorithm counts viewing someone's blog in order to click the block button as "engagement".
Sure you can add someone's username to your Filtered Post Content and it'll work if they created the post or if it's a version of the post that they added onto, but you aren't given the option to hide filtered posts completely and they will still show up on your dashboard with a warning and an option to view the post. And if that person happens to have a username that's just a completely ordinary or mundane word or is the name of a character or a series that you're into, any ordinary mention of those things will be filtered too. And you would have to update your filter every time someone decides to change their username.
I'll come across a post that was made during pride month of someone saying the most horrifically exorsexist shit and I'll go through the reblogs so I can block every single person who reblogged the post without any kind of criticism or commentary that tries to refute it, and by the end I'll have ended up blocking hundreds of blogs if not over a thousand. And then I go through and copy and paste each one of those blog names into a document I have saved on my computer so that I can go through those and block them again on every single one of my sideblogs, because blocking someone on main doesn't prevent them from interacting with you on a sideblog unless you block them there too. I'm still not finished copying over all the names of the blogs from a blocking spree I went on earlier today.
And I'll probably end up seeing the OP of that post on my dashboard later, because there's no doubt they will have popular posts that sound normal and innocuous as well, and I can't just expect anyone I follow who reblogs anything to know everything there is to know about the OP.
It has gotten to a point now where I'm not sure taking the time to preemptively block people is even worth it anymore and I really fucking hate it.
I need to curate my online experience and I want to prevent myself from reading things people say about people like me that are potentially triggering and I want to protect myself from any potential harassment campaigns, but the process I need to go through in order to guarantee that is just so tedious and time consuming that I'm not sure it's worth it anymore to try and diminish the risk of those things.
Or maybe it's just not worth having sideblogs anymore if I want to protect myself like this, even though I really like to use them for organization.
