Fantasy characters written by a Christian: Yes we all know the world was created by an all-powerful and benevolent Maker and we pray to him :)

Me: Okay but how do you know that? Was this derived from reason or from divine revelation? If revelation, what form did that take? What has God told you about him?? What is his relationship with this world and with the specific peoples in it?? Have you been given commandments?? Have you been given signs and wonders?? Do you argue about them?? Who's RIGHT??

(It is probably not entirely irrelevant that I am Catholic.)

(But also a lot of fantasy worldbuilding - secondary world or intrusive fantasy, and friendly or hostile to Christianity! - keeps seeming to try for "Christianity minus Christ." And that doesn't make any SENSE.)

C. S. Lewis: This fantasy world was sung into being by Christ, taking the form of a Talking Lion and the name of Aslan, and he has maintained a personal relationship with one specific country of this world + their friends in that form ever since.

Me: ...Okay, I don't think you can examine "Christ taking the form of a Talking Lion" without finding at least one heresy, but at least he's HERE and PRESENT. I'll suspend disbelief on the theology for that.

#but again #you must be careful!#sometimes people try to write god directly into their stories and THAT fails spectacularly #which is why i want a concrete *history* most i guess #the personal relationship does not require the characters to have an on-page conversation with him #but they ought to know something OF him that justifies worship #if you're telling me they worship God

I am once again asking why fantasy writers who want to make it clear God exists in their universes seem allergic to calling him "God."

There's nothing technically wrong with "the Creator" or "the Maker" or "the One" or whatever, but it. idk. it feels weird. Artificial, somehow.

#but then it is very hard to write religion well in books set in the REAL world let alone one you're making up #had to quit out of a fantasy book 80% of the way through once because God abruptly showed up as an actual character #and it was just. He Would Not Say That #author i can tell you are a well-intentioned christian but that is Just Some Guy #possibly the other end of the spectrum from 'we're going to refer to the Creator vaguely but we have no concrete knowledge of him'

Often the giveaway books are novellas or prequels/missing scenes to the author's "real" books, so not the best way to judge their quality :/

But Eliza Prokopovits and Mary Mecham had enjoyable reads (though I liked Prokopovits' also-free Beauty and the Beast retelling better than her novella here). Not life-changing but not bad. I will report back if I find any hidden gems.
