whats a stereotype for your country that you absolutely do. mine is that i unironically go "eh" and apologize a lot and i often drink maple syrup straight
The grip that Burger & Big Drink has on the American People cannot be overstated
the genius of megamind (beyond the obvious genius ofc) is that it's superman parody actually presents a genuinely unsettling depiction of the "hero" that I like wayyy better than "what if superman was evil" or "what if superman was wrong"... it's "what if superman didn't care"
I wouldn’t say he “didn’t care” more like he was burnt out
He played the role since he was a child and now is in his what 30s? 40s?
He knew there was never any real danger with Megamind in charge so decided to pursue something that’s a passion and doesn’t come naturally easy to him
but it was still a dick move
(via @uwugenides )
One of the things that always jumped out to me about this reveal is that it implies that Metro Man was also the very first person to recognize that MegaMind wasn’t really evil. He knew his nemesis wouldn’t actually hurt anyone if he won, he knew that this universally reviled pariah never really had any more choice than he did.
The rest of Metro City treats MegaMind like a real, sincere, serious threat once he’s unopposed, and it takes them a while to learn otherwise. But Metro Man? He’s not surprised to see him and Roxanne working together, he doesn’t act like there’s any kind of threat beyond his cover being blown. He wastes no time in coming clean once the cat’s out of the bag. He’s been working with this guy all his life. Besides his own mental health, I get the impression that he also recognized that this would be good for MegaMind too.
I just really love how in a superhero pastiche that asks “Is the villain really so bad, and the hero really so good?” the answer is “no, but that’s okay”. It’s okay that Metro Man isn’t a paragon. It’s okay that he has to take care of himself. It’s okay for him to step down and live his own life. It wouldn’t be okay for him to leave people in danger, but it’s pretty clear he knew he wasn’t doing that.
And it carries to the end. MegaMind becomes the city’s new protector, but it’s clear that he’s still got some issues to work through, and he’s getting help working through them. He’s got a support network, he’s willing to put in the effort, but he’s not the shining paragon Metro Man was believed to be. And he doesn’t NEED to be that paragon. He’s still good. He’s still protecting people. And he’s not alone in it.
God, there’s just so many shitty “Superheroes would have character flaws too, and that’s why they’d actually suck” deconstructions floating around, it’s nice to see a story that acknowledges that no one can live up to that kind of role, but that’s okay!
megamind once again proving to be the best modern superhero movie
The first thing the public (Roxanne) does when they find out Metroman wanted to quit was have a tantrum and throw things at him.
And she's presented as one of the most level headed people in the city.
He had good reason to try and sneak away.
Others have pointed out this before, but he also picked music to learn, something that his powers would have no way of helping/minimal help in. He wanted to feel genuinely challenged by something, so he started learning a skill that doesn't involve his inherent strength and powers. He is unfulfilled by the shallow, hollow world of superhero fights against someone who doesn't really need fighting. So he starts a real genuine challenge. And he's bad at it! The guy sucks at music! ... Because he's been doing it for at most, like six months. But he's still learning.
were you allowed to watch spongebob as a kid?
yes
no
spongebob wasn’t a cultural phenomenon/didn’t exist where/when i was a kid etc
other infinite nuanced answers
(no being mean to others for their spongebob experiences or lack thereof. i’m sure he wouldn’t want that)
💎 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺! Droplet Charm Wondrous item, common ___ This small ceramic charm resembles a water droplet with a face. It’s roughly two inches tall and can fit comfortably inside a typical water goblet. Its weight is negligible. The charm’s face changes depending on the humidity, impending weather, or water quality it’s surrounded by. For example, its face becomes sickly if placed in water that’s non-potable (including water that’s contaminated or poisoned) or gently pleased when placed in drinkable water. Similarly, its eyes turn skyward when rain is imminent (typically 15–30 minutes before it starts falling). Its expression takes 6 seconds to change. ___ ✨ Patrons get huge perks! I can think of another use for this magical item

i wrote this post over on bluesky today and, after receiving a few of the predictable "but what if i Want to write badly" responses you get to any opinion that can be taken as prescriptivist writing advice, i thought i'd talk more about what i'm getting at.
basically, it's an issue of suspension of disbelief. there are a lot of things in fantasy and historical writing that we're willing to look past. dragons, potatoes, the divine right of kings. we are able to suspend our disbelief that a monarch could be anything but a despicable tyrant if the story we're being told is convincing enough, or plays to our comforting worldviews about nobility and Great Man theory. we can also suspend it if we straight up didn't know that europe didn't have potatoes pre-columbian exchange. basically--it means it doesn't bother you that these elements aren't perfectly realistic. fiction is not required to be realistic. clue's in the name.
but there are some things we just can't ignore. some things hit us as out of place for the setting we've been presented, or the world as we understand it. it pulls us out of the story by reminding us, in that moment, that we are reading a constructed narrative made of a series of choices by an author. and for whatever reason, they made a Wrong choice, like plucking the wrong guitar string.

Actually the real reason I transitioned was because my parents joked so many times about returning me to the child store I decided to void the warranty.
Actually the real reason I transitioned was my dad complained about women in golf so much I knew it was a sure fire way to make him stop trying to teach me golf.
Actually the real reason I transitioned was because I'm really supportive of my wife but I wanted to make shopping for their tampons feel less awkward.
Actually the real reason I transitioned was to prove to a point about the ending of the Scottish play to my 8th grade English teacher.
Actually the real reason I transitioned was because slutty shorts for men went out of style and I couldn't give them up.
Have you considered doing standup comedy?
I prefer to sit.
Well then have you considered sit down comedy?
For sure, every time I stand up for open mic night, they says to me "sit back down."
This feels like a fun alternative to "do you want to know how I got these scars?"
I very much also have scars, but everyone knows I got them in an explosion.
The explosion blew my tits clear off

You can have any animal for a pet. Any complications such as “keeping the animal healthy and happy” and “the time and effort it would take to keep happy and healthy pet” and “keeping yourself uneaten” and “the pet I want is kind of extinct” have all been solved perfectly. You don’t have to think of that.
What is your pet?
Ok, need to make a Very Scientific Poll to settle some marital disharmony:
When making bagels, should you put cream cheese on
before toasting
after toasting
the backrooms are simply not as scary conceptually if there is Something In Them
the whole reason why they're so unnerving is BECAUSE there's nothing in them!! because they're unrelentingly liminal and lonely and uncomforting. there shouldn't be a monster guy in there chasing you. you should glimpse other humans (?) from a distance but they walk away before you can close the gap and then they're gone. things should run away from YOU. do u get it
"and there was a MONSTERowooowwohhhh" the monster is isolation and banal beige sameness and uncanny valley architecture. you fool. you rube. you're putting a hat on a hat and the second hat is not only unnecessary but it ruins the first hat!!!!!!! "there's a monster in there" great so now it's just another place for a monster to be. ridiculous
fine I will concede: you CAN actually put something in there while maintaining the vibes, but it should complement the location instead of just being a generic scary guy you could put literally anywhere
Why doesn't the Imperium like cloning tech?
There's no single reason. Best we can tell it's a combination of cost and hugely inconsistent results. You can't make a proper living clone (most of the time) due to the way souls and the warp and such work. You can make clone bodies and body parts, empty vessels, but if you're doing that you might as well just grab a random person or an augmetic for whatever you need a body for. It's cheaper and easier.
There is a reason that true cloning hasn't really been seen much, and individuals who can do it (Fabius Bile, assorted haemonculi, etc) are considered eminently gifted for being able to do it. Even then, it's still not a guaranteed and perfectly stable process. It's hard and you need good access to resources.
Wait, don't the Goliath gangs on Necromunda use a lot of cloning? Or am I getting confused?

I love love love saying "I scavenged a working microwave in the boylands" but nobody ever knows the reference and it breaks my heart
like, the first time I ever saw this I laughed so hard I started choking on spit but it's just not the kind of thing you can share with the average person in your life. this world is so cruel
He's like a fearsome grasshopper
For my next RPG adventure I need to study the Manosphere and male centric pickup culture. I don't want to do that at all but I need to so can craft an evil villain for my players to beat the shit out of
