Just want to say how proud of i am of america right now. Removing a dictator during a dictatorship is near impossible (typically it takes civil war or a death/ power vacuum) but for four years youāve been fighting back and now youāre fighting a heavily rigged, horribly unfair election and not giving Trump that ālandslide victoryā dictators typically get. I want you to know that many of us across the world, see those 50/50 looking results and donāt see america as half and half but 30% cultists who were given an easy vote and 70% people whoās vote was very hard to get out (we saw the lines, we saw the fake ballotboxes) and often outright thrown away. We hear that more people voted for Biden than have ever voted for a candidate before. We see your judges fighting to have every vote counted and the diverse new congressfolks youāve voted in. The narrative of a close race omits that one team had skates on a downhill road and the other had an obstacle couse littered with dirty needles, fences to break through, barbed wire to crawl under and rabid dogs blocking the way.
I actually needed to hear this I think. All Iāve been hearing for the last few years is how terrible America is and I know that reputation is earned but I and so many other people have been fighting this whole time because we love our country and trust our institutions and donāt want to see them fall and I know weāre not the best neighbors to have but weāre trying and it makes me so happy to see that someone, anyone, understands that weāre trying.
This post watered my crops, lowered my blood pressure, and folded my laundry.
People all over the world have been watching that election and talked to their american online friends. We listened to you and we tried our internet best to help you through this fight with comments and memes to make you laugh. We, and I am sure I speak for a lot of Europeans when I say this, are incredibly proud of you! Not only did you put up with 4 years of tyranny, no you fought through it! You protested against unfairness and suppression. You stood together in these incredibly trying times and I am just so genuinely happy for you!
memeception
WEāVE HIT TERMINAL MEME
@caesarianconfection
Iāve saidĀ āI hate thisā so many times on this website, and never actually meant it, becauseĀ āI hate thisā is just shorthand forĀ āthis is an example of a meme given a twist I wasnāt expecting with intent to surpriseā. Which is, in of itself, a meme on this site. God damn it.
But this⦠This is something else.
The rapidity of a memeās introduction to its zenith to its decline is so rapid that in ten years, youāll need a damn twenty-page manual to explain this. Itāll be as unfunny and hard to explain as jokes in Shakespeare plays, except even more inexplicable because fuck, at least Shakespeareās jokes are usually about anal or fucking your mother, good wholesome sex jokes we can all get behind.
For the love of fuck, how do you explain loss.jpg? How do you explain gun?
ā¦.I THOUGHT THIS WAS A YMCA REFERENCE
it is a YMCA reference - thatās one of the 6 memes being represented here
ok let me see if i can break this down easily. YMCA is the easiest place to start - the song itself has become a meme over time with people changing the lyrics to reference other pop cultural events. so YMCA is meme one (1)
this first lyric replacement (ātake the breadsticks and runā) is a reference to the tumblr meme āstuffing breadsticks into my purseā. i think everyone remembers that one so i wont bother to explain it. thatās meme two (2)
āman door hand hook car doorā is a meme of its own, a creepypasta from i dont remember when. it was a terrible stupid retelling of the genericĀ āstuck in a car while hook handed man tries to kill usā story so the stupid title caught on for memorability. that in and of itself is meme three (3)
āgunā is⦠yeah i dont know how to explain gun. long story short you add gun to the end of a phrase instead of what you expect the last word to be. its shock funny. its everywhere but its popular to add to āman door hand hook car doorā for.. some reason? gun is meme four (4)
and the thing is, this four meme combo is something thats gone around before. meme combos are, itself, a meme. which means taking this meme combo and mixing in another meme actually becomesĀ meme five (5)
which leaves us at loss.jpg. loss.jpg was a terrible bad comic supposed to be about some tragic event, but it was presented so poorly literally no one takes it seriously, and for some reason recreating the four-panel setup has become popular. so thats meme six (6)
(but i need to add that this is the greatest version of loss.jpg i think iāve ever seen. the initialĀ āyoung manā lines up with the guy bursting through the door, and the shock memeĀ āgunā matches the shock scene of the woman in the hospital and idk if OP even thought about that but it makes this just so much better)
I wasnāt going to reblog this, but @pagesofkennaās comprehensive meme-by-meme annotation is a thing of beauty and should be shared.
average tumblr post contains one meme, this post, which contains six, is an outlier and should not be counted
it might also just be a coincidence due to loss.jpgās format but the whole white minimalist four-panel setup is also suspiciously reminiscent of those early 2000ās rage comics
I was getting a political compass vibe too
tag urself im man door hand hook car gun
This works better than I thought it would.
This was in my senior project
Iām not sorry.

I hope you know this is the most cursed addition to my post, and I love it
THIRTEEN!?
SOMEONE EDIT THIS FROM THE ORIGINAL PHOTO SAYING āthis one does not spark joyā TO THIS VERSION SAYING āthis one sparks joyā
well i added my contribution : )
whyā
IM SCREAMING
This is the most elaborate meme I have ever seen and damn am I concerned by how it makes sense.
āYouāre in your 30s, but you still understand all this meme stuff?ā āOh yeah, sure.ā āCan you explain it to me?ā āI absolutely fucking cannot.ā
One does not simply explain this
Edit:
Another freaking layer!!!
16 motherfucking layers
In the future someoneās going to ask me to explain this and Iām going to be at a loss.jpg for words
you just⦠understand this. you do not get to explain it, nor would you be able to explain it. you simply understand the meme in and of itself.
imagine the valuable information my brain could be holding on to instead of all of this historical meme knowledge.

Do you know any blogs that can help me find a good Omens fic? I can't find it. It's where Aziraphale gets punished to become human (by archangel Michael) and Crowley can not handle it, trying to find any way to fix this.
@aziraphales-library is one such place, they have a lot of fic recs but also try to help find fic! (and iām gonna be @āing them again tomorrow when i post my smut recs list lmao sorry! iām just trying to spread the word of a good resource.)
iāve seen a few fics like that around, but iām not sure which one youāre specifically looking for anon! (i donāt really read fics where one or both of them are forced into mortality tbh). anybody know?

purge of 2002? of 2012? what ARE those?
Oh, how quickly the past is forgotten.Ā
They are part of the reason A03 is a thing now. Not the whole reason, but part of it.Ā
The Great Purges of 2002 and 2012 are when ff.net got a wild hair up their ass about THINK OF THE CHILDREN and nuked any fic posted on there that was explicit. Thousands upon thousands of nc-17 smutfics were lost.
Itās what led to the creation of alternate hosting sites for smutty ficā¦AdultFanfiction was the one I went toā¦but thousands of fics would never be recovered.Ā
Shit like the Great Purges and the Strikethrough of Livejournal eventually led to fans banding together to create A03, which I would have absolutely KILLED for when I was 15.
Back up ao3 was created by fans?
Itāsā¦right on the main page.Ā
I love this because I will bet you that persefv has read that bit we are all so inundated with hyperbole and advertising that says that the consumer is somehow in charge of whatever product they are shilling that we all just assumed this was another sales tactic.
But weāre not even⦠selling anythingā¦Ā *quiet sobs*
No ads. No subscriptions. No data selling.
We are the definition of āwhat it says on the tin.ā
Is there any way to spread this info?Ā
THE OTW WAS CREATED BY FANS SO WEāD HAVE AN ARCHIVE THAT WASNāT SUBJECT TO CORPORATE REVIEW.Ā
Nonprofit, so that nobody could ever say,Ā āthis isnāt making enough money; itās getting shut down.ā (See: Geocities, Quizilla, Figment, G+.) With lawyers involved and a firm awareness of the legalities of fanfic, so nobody would decideĀ āweāve gotten a nasty letter from a megacorporation with lawyers, so weāre hiding because we canāt afford to face a lawsuit. (Jedi Hurtaholics, Trevizoās Millennium site.) With teams, so that an argument between co-mods didnāt result in the destruction of a whole archive. (Gryffindor Tower, Detention.)
AO3 IS OUR SITE.
It is by fans, for fans. Fans do all the coding. All the legal paperwork. All the abuse/tos violation complaints. Fans make all the choices about policies. Fans decide how to run the fundraisers. Fans write the blog posts. All the volunteer staff are fans; all the people who train them are fans. Fans wrangle all the tags.Ā
(And the other OTW projects, too. Fans manage the entries at Fanlore. Fans run the Open Doors project. Fans publish Transformative Works and Cultures.)
EVERYONE WORKING FOR THE OTW LOVES FANDOM. Wants it to survive. Wants it to be awesome for everyone.
(Knows that it canāt be awesome for everyone; some approaches to fandom just clash hard. But they strive to minimize those clashes as much as possible, because they love fandom.)Ā
AO3 is not some company that decided,Ā āweāll make a site for fanfic and thenā¦ā I donāt know what people are thinking is the reason. Money? Data harvesting? Tax shelter? Amusement and pity?
Nope; AO3 was fans saying,Ā āLivejournal sucks; weāre tired of this fucked-upĀ ārebuild every three yearsā garbage; WE NEED TO OWN THE DAMN SERVERS.ā
Thatās theĀ āof our ownā part of the name. OTW isnāt aĀ āthemā running the siteĀ āfor us.ā ItāsĀ āusā making places forĀ āusā to share what we love with others ofĀ āus.āĀ
This this this.
I was there for all of that shit, and AO3 is a godsend. If you enjoy or create fanworks, support AO3, donate if you can, and remember why itās there in the first place!!
Fandom history really does get lost quickly. For current 20-something fans, AO3 has always been there.
Iām still salty about what happened to LiveJournal. Full disclaimer, I donāt read or write smut (no judgment, Iām ACE so itās just not my thing) BUT I still post on Ao3 because its a dream site for writers. So easy to revise and update, no clunky document manager getting in the way. I donāt have to worry about fixing some weird messed up garbled formatting, and the tagging system helps connect my stories to the people who WANT to read them and Iām one of the ones who LOVES the kudos. Iām hard-pressed to find anything to complain about the site.

Ways to un-stick a stuck story
Do an outline, whatever way works best. Get yourself out of the word soup and know where the story is headed.
Conflicts and obstacles. Hurt the protagonist, put things in their way, this keeps the story interesting. An easy journey makes the story boring and boring is hard to write.
Change the POV. Sometimes all it takes to untangle a knotted story is to look at it through different eyes, be it through the sidekick, the antagonist, a minor character, whatever.
Know the characters. You canāt write a story if the characters are strangers to you. Know their likes, dislikes, fears, and most importantly, their motivation. This makes the path clearer.
Fill in holes. Writing doesnāt have to be linear; you can always go back and fill in plotholes, and add content and context.
Have flashbacks, hallucinations, dream sequences or foreshadowing events. These stir the story up, deviations from the expected course add a feeling of urgency and uncertainty to the narrative.
Introduce a new mystery. If thereās something that just doesnāt add up, a big question mark, the story becomes more compelling. Beware: this can also cause you to sink further into the mire.
Take something from your protagonist. A weapon, asset, ally or loved one. Force him to operate without it, it can reinvigorate a stale story.
Twists and betrayal. Maybe someone isnāt who they say they are or the protagonist is betrayed by someone he thought he could trust. This can shake the story up and get it rolling again.
Secrets. If someone has a deep, dark secret that theyāre forced to lie about, itās a good way to stir up some fresh conflict. New lies to cover up the old ones, the secret being revealed, and all the resulting chaos.
Kill someone. Make a character death that is productive to the plot, but not ājust becauseā. If done well, it affects all the characters, stirs up the story and gets it moving.
Ill-advised character actions. Tension is created when a character we love does something we hate. Identify the thing the readers donāt want to happen, then engineer it so it happens worse than they imagined.
Create cliff-hangers. Keep the readersā attention by putting the characters into new problems and make them wait for you to write your way out of it. This challenge can really bring out your creativity.
Raise the stakes. Make the consequences of failure worse, make the journey harder. Suddenly the protagonistās goal is more than he expected, or he has to make an important choice.
Make the hero active. You canāt always wait for external influences on the characters, sometimes you have to make the hero take actions himself. Not necessarily to be successful, but active and complicit in the narrative.
Different threat levels. Make the conflicts on a physical level (āIām about to be killed by a demonā), an emotional level (āBut that demon was my true loveā) and a philosophical level (āIf Iām forced to kill my true love before they kill me, how can love ever succeed in the face of evil?ā).
Figure out an ending. If you know where the story is going to end, it helps get the ball rolling towards that end, even if itās not the same ending that you actually end up writing.
What if? What if the hero kills the antagonist now, gets captured, or goes insane? When you write down different questions like these, the answer to how to continue the story will present itself.
Start fresh or skip ahead. Delete the last five thousand words and try again. Itās terrifying at first, but frees you up for a fresh start to find a proper path. Or you can skip the part thatās putting you on edge ā forget about that fidgety crap, you can do it later ā and write the next scene. Whatever was in-between will come with time.

itās amazing to me how unaware culturally christian people are of⦠the fact that theyāre culturally christian like
they really just. donāt know. and wonāt listen when people tell them that like
even if youāre an atheist, the way you talk about God and religion is christian af
yāall truly believe that you can celebrate christmas completely secularly, devoid of any connection to christianity
yāall just have no idea and it shouldnāt shock me anymore but it still does sometimes
From @littleoceanbabe
You are exactly proving my point.
Why is it that your family gathers on Christmas in order to celebrate peace? Why not Eid? Why not Rosh Hashanah? Why not a million different holidays from the literal thousands of existing religions?
The reason youāre celebrating on Christmas of all holidays is because youāre culturally Christian. Itās not something to be ashamed of - you just need to be aware of it.
Huh. Iād never thought about it that way.
I know, right?
To be honest, I hadnāt either, not on any bone-deep level, until I started seriously considering converting, and it was only when I started realizing it on a personal level. But, then, I am also lucky in that we live in a school district where Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah and several other non-Xian holidays are given days off, which is just not the norm anywhere but in those gosh darn liberal enclaves on the coast. :PĀ
This feels really relevant to me too. I stopped being Xian over a decade ago, and I feltā¦annoyed, honestly, that I was still expected, by family and friends both, to celebrate all of the major Xian holidays even despite being at that time an atheist/pagan. And thatās only increasing my discomfort now that Iām converting to Judaism.
I donāt even know if I can keep having conversations about religion with my parents anymore, our views on faith and holidays and deities are so different now.
My parents basically just ignore the fact that @dadhoc and @mistresskabooms and I all converted. I hoped right up until the last second that they would show up to our Adult Bānai Mitzvah, especially knowing I was giving the sermon, but, welp, they didnāt.Ā
Our class has gotten close though so it was okay. My mispacha was there, and one of the other converts in the class, her dad came, so that was good.
Off topic, so anyway.
Iād also like to add (for the fellow Gentiles out there) itās NOT just theĀ āobviousā things like Celebrating Christmas, either. It is so, SO manyĀ ālittle thingsā that you donāt realize ARE Christian-influenced, that you might not even if you stopped and thought about it, because theyāre SUCH a part of āsecularā culture that you just assumed Thatās The Way It Is For Everybody. I had no idea for example, that the idea you had to have a witness in order for a marriage between two people to beĀ āvalidā was something not all religions and systems shared, until a Jewish person over on the NaNoWriMo forums corrected me and said āactually, you can do it just by the two agreeing if theyāre above a certain age, in Judaism; itās still considered religiously validā. In the USA, for a marriage to be LEGALLY recognized by the State? It HAS to have both an Officiant (not necessarily a Priest or Pastor of your own religion; sea captains, judges, and anybody who gets the right piece of paper, can do that), and a Witness. I know this, because I am Legally Married and it was part of the process; I had to get a friend to Officiate and a second friend to sign off as Witness on the paperwork. And I knew on some level this was partly fromĀ āreligionsā ātraditionallyā requiring itā¦but I had NO IDEA this was really a Gentile thing, a Goy thing, in specific! I justā¦.assumed that since verifying it happened was ālogicalā, all religions would naturally require at LEAST an Officiant OR a Witness if not both, āthough I could be wrongā I (very thankfully) admitted. Which in hindsight, is a big Assumption, thank goodness I left myself open for correction lol. And see, I wasnāt even RAISED going to Church; my parents were ~liberals~ who basically raised me Agnostic. But I was raised by a dad whose parents were Protestant, and a mom who went to Catholic school as a kid. I grew up in the American South. I grew up in America, and America is so darn Christianized, that it doesnāt matter that such things arenāt a requirement in Judaism, becauseĀ theyāre a requirement in Christian practice, so they become a requirement in the secular realm as well. Even the very definition ofĀ āreligionā is often mistaken for REQUIRING aĀ ābelief in the supernatural or a literal higher powerā - not because this is in any way anthropologically accurate (not only does Judaism technically allow for the opposite, so do some variants of Hinduism; Thereās posts on that blog that covered it better actually but you might have to dig for them; at least those both mention it), butĀ - ding ding! Thatās still how many people in the WestĀ think itās ādefinedā because thatās the requirements of the Christian religion. A belief in a literal higher power. Like, I have seen Culturally Christian atheists INSIST that you cannot possibly beĀ āreligiously Jewishā AND an atheist/not believe in a literal higher power, only to be corrected by actual Jewish people thatĀ āuh, no? Thatās not how it works, youāre thinking of CHRISTIANITY?ā.Ā Because they were so entrenched in the Christian Definition of Religion, it never even occurred to them that there was such a thing as aĀ āreligionā that did it differently than that. Because evenĀ āsecularā society in the West usually defines it that way, because Christianity does.
Heck, the idea of āJudeo-Christianā isā¦heh, well. Ask a Jewish person or two and if they have the energy youāll probably get a nice rant on why that term is a serious misnomer; but itās VERY common to treat Judaism as if it was just theĀ āprecursorā to Christianity, as if Christianity is just an extension of Judaism with an extra set of Books, and itāsā¦itās not. Itās REALLY not. That thinking stems from Christian cultures trying to simultaneously erase actual Jewish culture (where it actually differed from theirs), and pretending that theirs ~supplanted~ it and ~took its place~ like the New and Improved version, which⦠of course, being that most Christian sects insist that Christianity is The One True Religion, of COURSE they did.Ā Ā
Even the idea of weekends is pretty much derived from the habit of most Christians to make Sunday a Sabbath and āday of restā (some Christians do actually use Saturday instead - much like Jewish folk do - but Catholics and a majority of Protestant sects use Sunday).
Even some Really Big ālittle thingsā are more Christianized than you think though. The gender binary, and even the idea ofĀ āphysical sexā being binary, is a social construct that mostly European Christians inflicted on everybody via colonialismĀ and its influence on āscienceā and culture in general. Turns out itās not theĀ ānatural defaultā for societies at all, oops (warning, that link is a LONG read but very handy and enlightening, if at times depressing).
Thereāsā¦I mean off the top of my head, thatās it, but thereās definitely more Iām not even remembering and Iām sure quite a few that Iām not even personallyĀ aware of yet.Ā Personally, Iāve found that the more I learn about other cultures, religions, history, etc, the more I realize how very insular and Very Specific and perhaps even culturally weird in the grand scheme of things, my own upbringing was. Thatās not a bad thing though! As far as Iām concerned, itās just helping me learn what my biases and assumptions are, so A+ 10/10 recommend expanding your awareness of this stuff. <3
ššš
If I may add that christianity is very marketable, partially because most branches of christianity want new members and therefore advertising is a good way to do that, and partially because christian holidays have become easy to monetize with music and imagery, items and stories, holidays and events etc. etc. Even if you tried really hard not to be affected by christianity socially, itās so prevalent everywhere because of marketing that you canāt avoid it.
Hm well my family is celebrating the old Celtic/Neo celtic holidays like Samhain, Alban elfed/ litha and Yul (and several more) and some of those dates do allign with the christian holidays. But that's because the Christians kind of set their holidays on already existing ones of older times, because it was easier for the "common folk" to just rename their important days instead of rescheduling them all together.
So we celebrate Yul (winter solstice) instead of christmas and we do so on the 21. Of Dezember and we do celebrate Ostara on the 21. Of march (spring equinox) instead of easter, but that's not because we are culturally Christian but because Christians are, in fact, culturally Celtic.
So to anyone who doesn't want to be culturally Christian, just be culturally Celtic instead :D
