If we're gonna pack the house anyway...
My wife and I are (again) debating a move to France. She has dual citizenship and is fluent in the language, while I have enough French to order dinner. We're currently (quite early) retired in the US and neither of us see this country getting better in the near term.
Since we started dating, my wife has said that this is not a country to grow old in - we both lost elderly parents in recent memory and none of them got the care they should have in a civilized country. We're currently some variant of Lean FIRE and, as long as the markets don't completely collapse and the exchange rate between dollars and euro remains somewhat stable, we should be able to remain retired.
Here are my biggest concerns (in no particular order)
climate change - we currently live in the great lakes region of the upper midwest which should be one of the most climactically stable regions on the planet. Several of the regions in France that we've been considering had massive heatwaves to the point of small rivers drying up in the last couple weeks.
investments - we're currently living on investments that were mostly made with our respective inheritances plus some that I made while working, and if the market completely crashes or our financial advisor turns out to be criminally stupid and we lose everything, I'm confident that I can find enough work here for us to eat. I'm not confident that I can earn a living over there if it becomes necessary.
roots - I don't have much family left around here, but I have a network of friends and contacts built up over the last 50 years. I grew up in this city (and returned to it as an adult) I know how all the systems work and where to find that obscure bit of hardware on a Saturday afternoon.
stuff - I have lots of it. I'm ADHD with the 37 hobbies that entails. I also inherited and collected books, art, tools, and other useful things, most of which wouldn't make sense to ship across the Atlantic.
On the other hand, our financial advisor wants us to sell this house and move somewhere cheaper, and if we're going to be downsizing anyway, perhaps we do it radically and get rid of enough stuff to fit our lives into a 20 foot container.
I don't know if I'm looking for advice, but I wanted to write this up and get it out of my head.
