I just realized that the last two books I read (The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison followed by The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by KJ Charles) have something in common despite being very different books overall: A main character who gains power and privilege and has the opportunity to reinvent himself as an important, powerful person, but chooses to take the side of the abused kids of the world instead of forgetting that part of himself. comments

its crazy how feeling your feelings and having someone say "it makes sense that you are feeling that way" actually works. smh. I was having some Big Feelings about a thing that is objectively not that big a deal, due to my tragic backstory, (many such cases) and I told ship all about why this thing was bringing up all of those feelings and cried and they held me and now I'm like. Regular. now I'm like. ok I felt those feelings I didn't shove them away for being "unreasonable" OR act on them as though the amount of hurt I felt dictated the degree of Misstep on the part of the other people involved. I just felt them and we both went "it makes sense that this feels that bad" and then I was able to eat some almond butter and now I'm like ok! that hurt a lot, but that doesn't mean it sucked of them a lot. it only sucked of them a very small amount. it just hurt a lot for other reasons. and that's for me to handle. and now I can approach the situation as it is in reality, which is to say, as a situation that is Not That Big A Deal, but without feeling like I'm bottling up my reaction or betraying myself by ignoring how briefly unsafe it made me feel
anyway did y'all know about this. it rules. highly recommended
this is why like. bc all trauma is relational, healing that has to also be relational. bc when we are hurt we have a strong need to have that pain recognized and acknowledged and not dismissed. if we have a safe person to express how we are feeling hurt to, who can see and validate that, then that meets that need.
if we DON'T have that, we still have the need. and most often we seek to meet that need by SHOWING people just how hurt we are with our behavior or words. which often looks like lashing out! which like. doesn't help anyone! it just compounds relational harm.
sooooo many kinds of conflict and bad behavior are just like.... (looks under the mask) its old man Unmet Relational Needs Again!!!!
Edward Little for first day of Lieutenantfest! actually i’m very interested in silas’s sibling/colum’s parent who is not a necromancer? or maybe just not strong enough to be the master templar? and who had to have at least three children so that their eventual sibling (who is significantly younger than them) could have a cavalier they could siphon from. fascinating implications on all fronts there

truly the most wonderful thing about teaching is how small pieces of information add up to something that's more than the sum of its parts. with some of my chemistry students we've now gone through:
what are protons, neutrons and electrons and how were they discovered
how do protons, neutrons and electrons come together to make atoms
what exactly are those electrons doing in there and how can we describe them
how do those arrangements of electrons determine how atoms react with each other
what are some common types of reactions that can happen and how can we describe them
how do we write the formulas and names of different substances
and now I can give these kids the names of two chemicals and they can:
write the chemical formulas from the names
predict what type of reaction would happen and what the products would be
write a correct, balanced reaction equation
which is like. a fabulous degree of practical applicability for all this highly abstract information to add up to.
The degree of mutual intelligibility between native Spanish and Portuguese speakers is legitimately amazing <- guy who took like three minutes to figure out that the doctor I was interpreting for on a call today had dialed the wrong language and the patient was speaking Portuguese and not a dialect of Spanish was unfamiliar with.

Ok wait I re-blogged this without comment but then I quickly had the realization that this only applies to the people buying it. One of the biggest sellers of raw milk (who has incidentally poisoned and nearly killed dozens of children) only started doing it after fulfilling a request for it and realizing that he could charge quadruple the price of regular milk for it, and that people (at the time california hippies, and now anti-vaxxers) would happily pay for it. I don't believe for a second that the people actually selling raw milk believe the health hype, and they are for sure aware of the danger and harm they are causing (not that they would ever admit on camera or in interview) but when there is as much easy money to be made why would they stop unless forced to? (they farmer I mentioned earlier was in the process of being shut down by the federal government until...well, 2024 happened and RFK JR took over) They will instead lie to regulators that their methods are safe, lie to their customers that there is no risk, and lie to themselves when they inevitably hospitalize and murder children with the product they KNOW is infected with deadly pathogens.
This propublica report is an amazing expose on the raw milk issue and how at least one farmer knowingly sells cheese tainted with deadly bacteria and is 100000% worth the long read:

It's the venting. In the USA, dryers have massive exhaust vents to the outside of the room/building that take the hot wet away and leave hot dry behind. In many other countries, dryers do not generally have external exhaust vents, and simply fill the room they are in with the hot wet, which may or may not be enough to actually remove the hot wet from the clothing depending on how well ventilated the room itself is.
