@littlekittycatty the type of braids that are being discussed in this post, like locs, are specific to black people and black culture. The braids being discussed here were designed for afro textured hair are historically associated with black people. This has nothing to do with Australia and Vikings. Katy Perry and Myley Cyrus were not out here gelling their baby hairs, rapping, and twerking to try to look like vikings. They were ripping off black women bc they could and bc it’s what generations of white women have done before them. Are black people the only people in the world to figure out how to braid hair? Obviously not. But certain braids and braiding patterns are black people specific, and you cannot pretend like Katy Perry just decided to start using the n-word and ripping off aave bc of Australia. She was trying to be black, and chose these braids bc they are heavily associated with BLACK people

And this is why, while it would be nice if it were ‘just hair’, white people really cannot wear these braids or dreads and it not be offensive. It’s offensive. These hairstyles, the way white women wear them, are meant to convey an entire attitude, which like OP says pushes the idea that the hairstyles ‘stand for’ a sort of trashy, hypersexualized persona. In reality it’s just what black people do to keep their hair neat and healthy. There’s NO inter-cultural assumption black people make about other black people who have braids/dreads based on their hair alone. The idea that braids/dreads stand for a bad bitch, a ‘free spirit’, a seductress, all of that is created by white people projecting stereotypes on us.
