So, I'm sitting here, watching something on a streaming service, and I keep getting a specific advertisement.
I keep getting Trivago commercials, and at first, they're weird, and a bit unsettling, but you can't place a finger on why, but after the 500th advertisement, you notice why it's unsettling.
The actors move robotically, their lips are synchronized with the words strangely, lining up, but out of sync, yet the most unsettling part is the actors are too detailed but look fake.
So, after some googling, I discovered my gut feeling is right, Trivago uses one actor, they record the lines, and then they use AI to modify the actor's voice, and then create multiple people generated from previous, real Trivago commercials, where they hired real actors.
They also use AI to edit out actors from old, and real commercials, which I didn't notice as I'd seen the same commercial hundreds of times that they blur together;
These teeth have always been unsettling to me anyway

Someone help me understand… I feel like I’m missing something
Apparently the writer of the James Bond series doesn’t want him to play Bond in the new 007 movie because he’s “too street”. Which we all know is code word for “too black”.
No its not for fuck sake. I’m getting so sick of this. Have you ever seen him in Luther?
He’s a street smart detective with a slight cockney accent. Basically, to the writer, he’s didn’t seem posh enough to be James Bond. I think its dumb, and I think he’d make a great Bond and that he’s not too street to play Bond well, but his blackness is not the reason.
God damn people, read the whole quote before you pull the race card.
He added: “I’m really sorry my comments about Idris Elba have caused offence. That wasn’t my intention.
“I was asked in my interview if Idris Elba would make a good James Bond. In the article I expressed the opinion that to my mind Adrian Lester would be a better choice, but I’m a writer not a casting director so what do I know?”
The author, who has written “continuation” Bond novels, including the latest Trigger Mortis, and said Lester would be a more “suave” Bond, explained his use of the word “street” to describe Elba.
http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/sep/01/anthony-horowitz-apologises-idris-elba-too-street-bond
You know what Adrian Lester looks like?
No of course you didn’t.
Idris Alba responded saying “Always keep smiling!! It takes no energy and never hurts! Learned that from the Street!! #septemberstillloveyou.”
Look, if the fucking actor doesn’t think its racism that the writer would prefer a different black actor then its not racism.
Just because YOU think ‘street = black’ doesn’t mean everyone else does.
Sorry for the rant.
What’s that? SJWs taking things out of context so they can complain? We’ve never seen that before.
Also, AFAIK, the last two Bonds have been talented actors, but not A-list when hired. Idris is decidedly A-list, Lester not so much.
Incidentally, Lester stared in a production of Sweeney Todd, and in Hamlet as the title character. In both cases, he was playing characters that are traditionally white.
Personally, I think it would be hard to reconcile a black Bond with his Scottish-Swiss lineage. It’s not like either of those counties are exactly known for an abundance of black people. Short of having him adopted, I really don’t see how that would work out.
Both of these can be true.
Misplaced empathy leads to opening your borders to rapine beasts that ruin the future of your children.
It signals the death of empathy for your own people, your very own children.
There is a thing called toxic empathy. Take care of your own house before you handle another.
Are we still peddling this quote taken wildly out of context?
While Musk said he believes in empathy and that “you should care about other people,” he also thinks it’s destroying society. “The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy, the empathy exploit,” Musk said. “There it’s they’re exploiting a bug in Western civilization, which is the empathy response.” Empathy, he said, has been “weaponized.”
He's not saying empathy itself is wrong, he's saying people can abuse it. He also said it's complicated.
Ironically, OP misquote is often deployed to demonize Musk himself and decrease empathy for him.
Exactly so.
Empathy should be for everyone or no one. Meeting the needs of one person shouldn't mean dismissing the needs of another.
And there are ways to make sure that this doesn't happen, if we bother to look for them.
Putting people in Oppressor/Privileged or Oppressed/ Not Privileged groups makes for less empathy, not more.
(popular leftist voice) these right wingers are so mad because they get no women. if you are a Good Person a woman will appear and suck your dick.
(popular leftist voice) these right wingers are all sooo poorrrr and stupid. They are stupid because they are poorrrr, racism would never exist in my suburban area
Popular leftist voice: these right wingers must have brain damage. They must be bigots because they are literally reta suffering from blsck mold, or brain damage.
Popular leftist voice: Every single right-wing person is literally so ugly and chopped, let me point out their exact features and how they're ugly. Having bad thoughts literally ages you. Good People are always hot and sexy and have kind countenances.
Unpopular opinion incoming but like
What are we supposed to do/say then?
Are we supposed to be nice to Nazis? Are we expected to be polite to fascists?
What insults are woke enough for us to use? What can we say that does not risk insulting others who were not the intended target? I can't think of any off the top of my head, but if anyone can then please share. But this feels like very unproductive rhetoric in the current times.
I know this is a brand new concept to some people but if you can't insult someone for what's actually wrong with them instead of insulting them for their appearance, insulting unrelated diagnoses, or insulting people who get no bitches, maybe you should shut the fuck up until you've figured it out instead of wasting my oxygen defending those behaviors
@violent-sneezes thinking rightwing automatically equals nazis is the problem.
All those posts are about you.
I think leftists have long ago abandoned the notion of making better arguments or offering preferable solutions, that the young ones and the particularly stupid never learned to engage with what is actually being said and go straight for "he's ugly," etc.
So much so that @violent-sneezes can't imagine anything besides ad hominem attacks.
Try telling Nick Fuentes that he's a racist and a fascist. It'd just end up as a clip on his "triggering the libs" compilation. Calling him a closeted incel, however, will get to him.
Assuming my age and calling me stupid simply because I am willing to insult bad people is astoundingly hypocritical, btw.
And as I finally point, @uncle-beanbag-mojave, I don't think every right-winger is a fascist. I was bringing fascists into the conversation so I could find out how I am expected to engage with them. This is relevant to the conversation due to the fact that fascism is a right-wing ideology, and therefore fascists are included under the umbrella term "right-winger."
The point about young and/or stupid was that young don't remember when leftists made principled arguments and the stupid can't develop principles organically.
If I called Fuentes a racist he'd probably say "yes, I am." I don't call him closeted because that's not relevant. Side note, leftists have this funny thing where being gay is only bad when right wingers do it, in a words-as-spells sort of way.
It would be like if I made fun of you for that flag you have instead of engaging with what you're saying. What I'm telling you is that you have to engage with the argument not the person.
On principle, I agree. But you cannot reason someone out of a position that they did not reason themselves into.
Fascism lacks reason. Not only is it wholly destructive to everyone else, it also eats itself alive. It is a cruel, impractical, doomed ideology, and those trait are self evident from the start. Anyone who believes in fascism either revels in the cruelty, or la ks fundamental reasoning skills necessary to engage in debates. (Often times, it's both.)
Trying to argue with them is worse than useless. It just platforms and legitimizes a wholly illegitimate ideology.
As for the "gay is only bad when they're right-wing" thing, I'm not making fun of him for being gay. I'm making fun of him for how much he hates himself, and how he chooses to be miserable and small instead of simply exploring himself.
There are arguments for fascism. Or their axioms are different from yours. One may say something like all men are created equal, then when questioned, say something akin to "God did it," but fundamentally there is no difference between that and trying to recreate divine hierarchy on earth.
The argument is that the nation exists as a super-organism of the collective will of the people. And that anything against the nation should evoke an immune response. If you don't understand that a powerful and aesthetically symbolic system can engender a sense of belonging that outweighs all else... Basically my take on what Mussolini meant by "Everything within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state."
This is all besides the point, since this is just a detour from the main point that if you want to convince people, personal attacks aren't the way because they alienate people into weird insular groups.
At least if converting people to your system is the goal and not to act as a radicalizing element for both sides of every issue that will ultimately end in violence.
I'm not sure why she thinks shaming people will work. It's nto exactly like fascism and Nazis are popular. Even violence often leads to violent escalation in return.
As I've said before; you can't stop people with a persecution complex by persecuting them.
I really think VS just wants an excuse to yell at Bad People™.

my social piers frown upon nationalism/patriotism as it sparks wars and genocide; however, the horrors of the soviet union suggest that class consciousness is equally dangerous. Even the french revolution can be interpreted as a danger of class consciousness.
so I think "nationalism is so dangerous" might be special pleading, unless you are equally suspicious of class consciousness. Like it is a weak argument, we have let slide because we oppose the Republicans (who love nationalism) and oppose racism (which is associated with nationalism)
on the other hand, "Have you seen my fellow Americans? I feel no brotherhood with them" is still valid, since it is attacking emotional appeal of nationalism.
"my (sub)-culture frowns on nationalism" is also still valid in the way that asserting arbitrary values is valid.
You know what made me grok the opposition to nationalism? What really made it click?
The Jessica Yaniv case.
Seeing otherwise decent people circle the wagons and enable an obvious abuser because the person in question is one of theirs was illustrative like nothing before.
But here's the kicker: I don't think I've seen a person who's as chauvinistic about their Western nationality or white ethnicity as everyday randos on here are about their gender or orientation.
Of course, some people may be hamming it up for effect, but still...
This is tumblr, the website where the concept of making up your own unique sexuality/gender and then demanding it be treated as real on pain of being called homo/transphopbic was born, lived and died. They weren't hamming it up
Additional point:
so I think "nationalism is so dangerous" might be special pleading, unless you are equally suspicious of class consciousness
Many of the people who constantly talk about CC effectively believe the 1% are highly class conscious and busily work night and day to hold everyone else down.
Even when logic would dictate it would actually make things worse for those rich people.
So they're not even consistent about CC even with in their own frameworks.
when people defend the “Cis white guy is default” thing like “He’s meant to be an everyman we can all relate to and project on!” kindly remind them the largest ethnic group in the WORLD is Han Chinese and the highest gender percentage fluctuates so if you want an ACTUAL “default” you want a 40 year old chinese person whose gender changes from year to year.
#give us the middle-aged gender fluid Chinese protagonist that we can all relate to and project on (via @mr-and-mr-pavus)
This is hilarious when you consider the American movies that China loves to see.
Yeah, they like movies about white men too.
In 2026, the chicest thing a gay actor can do is never explicitly come out as gay but also make it abundantly clear that he is. Coming out is too modern. Staying closeted is too old fashioned. But this method merges contemporary freedom with Old Hollywood glamour and allure, and it weeds out the dumbest people who truly don’t get it. I call it the Pascal Method.
Taylor Swift does this
no she doesn’t
You clearly don't go here or to queer history and signaling, or both, enough to have this conversation and I'm not going to explain it to you. You could have asked questions, you could have done even a modicum of research. You didn't and you made yourself look ignorant. Goodbye.
Unlike most conspiracy theories, this one actually has a vaguely plausible reason for the evil masterminds to send coded messages; specifically to feed the conspiracy theories.
Feminist will say shit like "we have empathy unlike those soulless rape ape moids" and then tell other women that they deserve to be abused and beaten to death by a pedophile rapist if they shave or wear makeup or choose to marry a man and then act all confused as to why feminism has a less than stellar reputation among many people.
You have waded trenches that I have not, my friend. The nastiest of my anons, however, I suspect have come from radfems, and they are fixated on warning me in gruesome detail that my husband will one day, somehow, someway, abuse me or my daughter. My daughter is their favorite emotional blackmail punching bag. It's easy for them to speak this way about children. None of them have any.
Oh God, now you've made me wonder if I got some medium case of "lol so quirky" writing. *screaming*
Okay, so let's actually elaborate on this a bit to hopefully assuage some concerns.
It's important to acknowledge the distinction between 'comic relief for the sake of providing levity', 'anachronisms for the sake of reader comprehension', and 'lol so quirky' in writing.
Even some of the most serious, grimmest stories can incorporate brief moments of humor for the sake of providing space for readers to breathe and actually digest the misery, violence, and turmoil they're witnessing. This is fine.
Anachronisms, while they should be used as sparingly as possible, can be used for the sake of making sure that your audience is following along during complex concepts or really convoluted (positive) worldbuilding or lore recollections. Something like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is full of effective examples.
'Lol, so quirky' writing is what happens when you have a writer trying to combine the ^previous standpoints in order to force humor, pop-culture references, or ironic genre observations to the detriment of the reader's immersion and the flow of the story at large. This would be like you reading an epic fantasy adventure where a brave youth is on their way to save a princess, and the author pulls everything to a halt to write a scene like:
'And, thus, the youth rode his stallion -- though, really, what farmer's son in medieval Europe could actually afford a stallion; it was probably more like a really grey pony -- toward the castle to seek out the fair maiden's favor. We could ask if the fair maiden really wanted to be rescued, maybe she was enjoying being held captive and actually enjoying a five-star resort vacation with avocado toast and bottomless mimosas, but the average fan of this genre doesn't want to think that deeply about things. Where were we? Ah, yes: brave youth, maiden without agency, fantasy cliches abound.'
See how up its own ass and forcefully 'quirky' that was? And, again, imagine coming across that in a book that's supposed to be serious or epic. It would immediately tear you out of your immersion, wouldn't it? That is what is known as a writer tossing all matters of storytelling and narrative flow aside so that they can have people on social media making memes about their being 'lol so quirky'.

Can we get an example of the dreaded 'lol so quirky' writing?
For reference sake, of course
So the one I'm currently halfway through is the first volume of My Husband and I Sleep in a Coffin, which is about a guy who wakes up to find that he has been placed into the undead body of an immortal warrior's beloved (said immortal warrior may or may not be a little mentally unhinged, but don't worry about it).
Such immersion-breaking examples of 'lol so quirky' writing I've come across include but are by no means limited to:
''Little shotas are so kawaii! I'll make sure to raise him into a well-rounded kid!' - An entry of a journal that was, supposedly, written by the MC's ancient incarnation 'I'm mindin' my own business using the restroom in my own tomb, when a whole-ass man comes falling from the sky and won't stop yelling, scaring me so bad I can't even poop in peace!' - The MC's thoughts when a graverobber stumbles into the bathroom where he's trying to take a shit. "I really didn't mean it. Wh-why is a big boss man like you acting like a shojo character?! Wait! Don't tell me you're a bottom, that's not gonna work! Two bottoms won't equal a happy ending!" - The MC during a scene where he's trying to calm the love-interest down from a murderous rage.
And, before anyone jumps in: I'm not some pretentious mature writer who's above the notion of comedy relief in stories. These examples, though (among many others I've been seeing in my danmei journey), have just made me put a bookmark in place, get up, and walk around the room a bit while I try to figure out what the hell I'm reading.
Not that I should have to defend Chainsmoker Cat in any regard aside from 'fictional content has the right to exist no matter how uncomfortable it makes people, fuck you', but really wish I didn't have to see people using their dislike of the gross-out humor to justify their anti-Japanese rhetoric...
If you only decide to warn people about the risks of breathplay because you think incels are into it, roaches should leave out poison for you.
Also seems like an attempt to warn teens about the dangers of breathplay/choking that assumes it’s a vile right wing male impulse is not going to be as effective as it could be in the reality of many women literally asking for it.
Like, if your public health message is “girls, stay away from right wing men because they will choke you” that’s not going to have the result you want when some young women are all, “Joke’s on you, I’m into that” and go try to get strangled by dating right wing men.
Dang, looks like I saw this post too late and the cowards over at the ALA have already disabled replies and quote-reposts.
... Oh well, I'll just share my sentiments here!
Is the thought-process behind this list, spotlighting more cozy, wholesome Romantasy for people not wanting so much kink and hardcore smut, a viable endeavor? Yes, of course!
Is the wording that they used ('ethical', 'ick', 'mature grounded', 'modern sensibilities') particularly tone-deaf not only because of the current hellscape that sees anything more transgressive than an M/F story where the guy is a little bit grumpy censored or denied proper industry representation but also because this is LITERALLY FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION saying this?
Yes. Entirely so. I am glad that the comments and quote-reposts were full of people pointing that out before the ALA shut the post down.

“Why don’t you use ai” idk man beyond the obvious environmental and “this machine causes psychosis and encourages people to kill themselves” thing I think asking the equivalent of a solid D student who is also a pathological liar if they can answer my question/do the work for me seems pretty fucking stupid
