since Iām thinking about this instead of studying for bar prep:
people in general tend to assume that a person whoās been arrested is either innocent or guilty. and if theyāre guilty, then they deserve fewer rights than the innocent person.
like, if the police break into an innocent personās house and look for drugs, we recognize that itās a bad thing and a gross violation of rights. but if the police break into someoneās house and doĀ find drugs, well, thatās just what they deserved. weād all be upset if the police started randomly murdering people on the street for no reason, but many wouldnāt mind if the police started randomly killing known child molesters. itās not okay if the police plant evidence to frame an innocent man for murder, but if they know heās the murderer and plant evidence to help the case along? well, thatās unfortunate but necessary.
there are three problems with this:
You cannot always know with certainty whoās innocent and whoās guilty;
A two-tieredĀ āinnocentā andĀ āguiltyā legal structure will always be used against innocent marginalized people;
Even guilty people have rights.
this happens a lot on tumblr. not exclusively on tumblr (itās also a major aspect of mostĀ āgrittyā police dramas and almost all comics), but itās definitely there. like, calls to summarily execute rapists sound great in theory, because we all agree that rape is evil. except for when itās used to kill innocent black men who looked the wrong way at a white woman.Ā
and there are people who will say that no, of course, the problem isnāt summarily killing rapists, the problem is summarily killing the wrong peopleĀ (that is, innocent people). which, again, you canāt know whoās innocent and whoās guilty - lots of innocent people arenāt sweet old ladies whoāve never done anything wrong, or have perfect alibis and never contradict themselves. hell, being guilty of a crime in the past doesnāt mean that they committed thisĀ specificĀ crime that theyāve been accused of.
and even if they are guilty - even if they are stone-cold, unrepentantly guilty - they still have rights. thatās whatĀ āinnocent until proven guiltyā means. it means that stripping someone of their legal rights is a big fucking deal,Ā so no matter how guilty Obvious McCriminal looks, you still have to follow the rules weāve set in place to prevent abuses.Ā
like, itās not that every person whoās ever been treated shittily by police and the court system is actually innocent, so therefore the system is bad. itās that we have a system that treats people like shit once weāve decided theyāre guilty, regardless of when the decision is made, and weāre okay with that. after conviction? definitely. after arrest? yup. beforeĀ arrest, because we just have a feeling about them? sure.
and I get why people make posts or write stories about guilty people being treated badly. wanting vengeance is a powerful emotion. grief and anger are powerful emotions. it is not unnatural to want to hurt people who have hurt others. people like the idea of karma, of cosmic scales balancing out the hurt and suffering inflicted by a person by making them suffer back. Iām not saying that no one is allowed to have those feelings.Ā
Iām just saying that there are implications behind them that are deeply disturbing (āif I decide youāre guilty, youāre less of a person to meā) and that itās the primary driving force behind most of the issues in our criminal justice system.
actually, since this post has become relevant (again), Iād like everyone to join me in a little thought experiment: why do the police bring up a murdered personās criminal record when they are extrajudicially killed?
like, we can all agree that the sentence for drug possession, drunk driving, trespassing, etc. is not execution, and even if it was, thatās after theyāve been arrested and convicted. cops are not judges, so itās not their call to decide if someone is guilty or to punish them for it. so why does it matter if someone isĀ āa known criminal,ā or if they have drugs in their system, or if they have a gun on their person?
āwell, obviously itās to bias the public against the person who was killed,ā you might say. okay, but why is that?
itās because they know that we think of guilty people as less than human, and innocent people as blameless. therefore the murdered person deserved to die (because guilty people deserve what they get), and the cop is innocent (he was just trying to protect people!). if it didnāt work as a tactic, then they wouldnāt do it!
it is this mindset that permits the police to murder. we cannot stop police violence unless we dismantle the idea that being guilty of a crime negates your humanity and your civil rights.

There's a bunch of adhd advice out there that's like "people with adhd tend to work better under deadlines due to the anxiety so here are ways to artificially induce a stress response in order to get you to get work done" and it's like well what if I don't want to be stressed out all the time in order to function
this gold shouldn't stay in the comments
hey loves, Iāve been reading through the comments and loads of people are asking how to not fall into this pattern because thatās all they know. so, hereās some advice from Auntie Pan whoās been in the trenches (stress-caused disabilities and chronic illnesses).
context: grew up in an abusive, controlling home, escaped to uni, had a prolonged mental breakdown, became a teacher and worked in a dysfunctional school with amazing kids and nightmare management for years. I did not realise I have adhd and autism for a long time. (You might even be able to scroll back through this blog to find the time around which I did realise lol.)
ANYWAY, things that have helped me because my body can no longer handle any kind of stress without flaring up:
If youāre doing anything that requires you to do a lot of prep before you begin the actual thing (e.g. cooking, deep cleaning a room, moving house), mise en place. Thatās a fancy french way of saying get everything ready before you begin. So if Iām cooking idk spaghetti carbonara, that means fry and chop the bacon, separate the egg yolks from the whites, put water in the kettle, put dry spaghetti into a pan. Once everythingās ready, it reduces the mental load and means I can focus on the actual cooking and any clean up that I can do along the way. H/t to @ms-demeanor for this, you changed my life!
the Might As Well rule. This one works really well for me but you gotta be careful otherwise youāll get sucked into the Vortex. Basically, letās imagine youāre in the bathroom, brushing your teeth. You notice that the extra roll of toilet paper has been used. instead of thinking, āIāll get to that laterā, and then forgetting about it until you sit down on the bog (no judgement, weāve all been there), you think āMight As Well put an extra roll while Iām here!ā This tends to help with the little tasks that build up over time. This Does Not Work for big tasks.
Leading on from no.2, Do It Immediately/ASAP really helps me too. My current boss will email me on a Friday and say, ādonāt reply to this now! Leave it til monday!ā But she and i both know that if i leave it til monday, I will forget and get stressed and this will make me Very Ill. So, instead, the moment i receive the email, Iāll either schedule in replying to it as soon as Iām done with my current thing, OR Iāll reply to it immediately.
Anything that canāt be actioned immediately, i mark as Unread. Anything Unread in my inbox is a future action, and i check those Unread emails/texts/whatevers Every. Day. To make sure whether today is the day i have the info to action it. (This also means i have to stay on top of my inbox. I read all my emails and then mark them accordingly. Iām also brutal with unsubscribing)
The House Always Wins. Both in a literal sense, because i am in a constant battle with keeping my house clean, and i know now that Iāll never get it as clean as i want it. Itās impossible, i no longer have the energy or stamina to vacuum and scrub everything. But also just in a life sense. Iām never going to achieve things to perfection, and perfect is the opposite of done. And getting things done is that much more important when you have limited energy and strength. Accept that you often have to half-arse life in order to Full-Arse the few things that really matter to you.
Have multiples of everything, everywhere. I wear support gloves, so i need to have handcream at every sink and everywhere i sit down in the house. I try to keep it unobtrusive, but it means i donāt have to trek upstairs just to moisturise my hands. Gum, phone chargers, pens and pencils, water bottles, hand sanitizer, whatever you need.
Work with people, even if itās online. Body doubling actually works. Also Iāve found that if Iām working on assignments, taking myself to a library or study area that isnāt my bedroom helps so much.
Show off! Tell people on here or elsewhere in your life about the fact that youāve just written 100 words! Or that youāve cleaned the fridge and thatās a really big deal for you. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small.
Basically, youāre aiming to reduce the mental load as much as possible. Wear the same types of clothes all the time to minimise the amount of laundry. Eat the same three lunches so decision fatigue doesnāt take over.
All of this takes time to implement and it is cumulative, but i hope it helps. Reading the comments on this post, i finally understand why adhd is comorbid with so many other conditions. letās take care of each other <3
I'm so glad to hear that helped you!
For anybody looking for resources from someone dealing with actual ADHD, I have an incomplete but ever growing list of ADHD tips, tools, and suggestions on my website.
A lot of the pages on that site are adapted from my tumblr posts, for instance I'm adapting this post about car repair projects with ADHD into a guide on project management and completion with ADHD.
(Red links are stuff that I've got planned but haven't published for reasons that are probably clear to anyone looking for ADHD advice online)
You can really tell whoās never experienced poverty and food insecurity when it comes to discussions around food costs and how unhealthy food is cheaper. Some fucker always comes in with the price of like⦠lettuce or⦠apples. And itās like yeah bitch but can you work an 11 hour shift after eating some salad and an apple!?! Find me something cheaper, and more filling than the broke ass staples of boxed mac and cheese, hot dogs, noodles, bread, beans, and rice. Iāll wait.
It also ignores the mental toll that poverty takes like maybe your home made veggie filled recipe isnāt crazy expensive but it also involves prep time and cooking time and organization in terms of fresh food that a lotta poor people canāt manage.
Not to mention if you can only afford to get to the store once every couple weeks via bus or cab then you canāt keep fresh veg on deck.
But ya know.. poor people are just dumb and lazy.
