no but i'm still thinking about how much boromir would fucking LOVE the shire
it is beautiful rolling hills just stuffed to the GILLS with hobbits
including BABY HOBBITS
HOBBITS BUT SOMEHOW IMPOSSIBLY EVEN SMALLER
and yeah the adults might be fairly wary, but we see in the first movie that the kids come running immediately to see gandalf in hopes of seeing something magic
and now??? here is LARGE PERSON??? who can play swords and toSS THEM REAL HIGH UP IN THE AIR AND CATCH THEM???
boromir deserved to retire as the grandpa of endless waves of hobbits, and i will cry forever that he never got to live his destiny
weeping on the floor about
the idea of a hobbit mama scolding her faunts not to get too rough with "nice mr. boromir" as this man is exactly where he wants to be being dogpiled by giggly bb hobbits who absolutely "defeated" him in "combat"
warrior hands that have seen so much violence SO gently holding a TEENY TINY baby hobbit he was handed to let a papa hobbit track down his wayward toddler
(boromir fighting back tears because THEY COME THIS SMALL??? HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE???? THE BABY FITS IN ONE OF HIS HANDS???) (baby yawns and snuggles their lil cheek against his thumb and this man is nearly brought to his knees)
Official Manager Of Lifting Big Things
boromir accidentally joining a hobbit stitch and bitch club because someone's gammer asked him to carry her yarn for her to the meeting and he didn't know how to leave after he was greeted and handed food and tea
the club is actually fun, and the hobbit grannies respond to his tales of politics and battle with the same sympathetic clucking that they do to rivals stealing recipes, including his hand being patted sympathetically
boromir gets his own special big cup that moves from house to house for meetings so he can get an acceptable amount of tea for gossip time
there is So Much Lap for bb hobbits to claim
the concept of bb hobbits making him a flower crown for the spring festival so he can match everyone but having to adjust it twice because it's the first one they've made so big before
the idea of bb hobbits who heard stories (mostly from pippin and merry) who now yell out "GONDOR >:D" when charging into a playfight (they don't know what a gondor is) (they're not interested in learning)
(five of them are holding up boromir's shield and can't see past it) (they will charge headfirst into a tree) (they will learn nothing from this experience)
boromir having to learn how to do the cat owner shuffle because there are always faunts underfoot (usually trying to catch a lift on his feet because he can step SO high :D)
gandalf being lowkey salty because HE still gets side glances??? but boromir??? is basically seen as everyone's relative who just happens to be very large??? yes he is Big Folk, but above and beyond that, he is hobbit ✊😔
@milady-bugg oh my god great pyrenees boromir
@little---furnace
oh my god cultural misunderstanding of
in gondor: constantly at war, awareness of supply use, the polite thing to do is to ask for more if you want it but to always have finished what's on your plate when you're done.
in the shire: with hobbit appetites, a fully empty plate means a guest needs more. no one wastes a bunch (leavings will be fed to the pigs), but good manners to show you've had enough involves leaving just a bit to show you were well-satisfied and completely full. an empty plate means you need more to fill up the corners.
so boromir is trying to be done, but the hobbits just keep putting more on his plate, and it turns into a feedback loop of politeness that ends with boromir eating more than he ever has and still being stuck at this tea party two hours past when he first tried to leave.
the comedy of this poor man trying SO hard to eat fast enough that he can put his plate down and escape versus hobbit granny watching him like a hawk with serving tongs in one hand and a tray of mini quiche in another.
that theory that the Arkenstone is a Silmaril…it’s doubly implausible, but imagine if nobody knew. If the dwarves were guarded enough of their greatest treasure that…you wouldn’t even need to hide it from that many people, honestly. Mostly a few elves, and all wizards.
and then Bilbo sidles up to Gandalf like, “Thorin and all are holed up in the Mountain, but I think they’re being nuts, so I…kind of stole the Arkenstone, I think.” And (it’s been thousands of years since the light of the trees was doused save for the precious brilliance locked away in Feanor’s gems, since oaths and blood and war that raged until the skies cracked and the earth shattered, and the little people of the Shire have no memory of it at all) he pulls out a fucking Silmaril.
Gandalf: *spittake*
Gandalf: *hurriedly glances at Thranduil. the king of Mirkwood’s eyes shine with curiosity and greed, but not recognition, nor the terrible lust that overtook Feanor and his sons. right, right, he was never in Thingol’s court while the jewel that Luthien and Beren took was there. we’re good. we’re good for now*
Gandalf: That’s, uh, nice, Bilbo. Put it away, would you?
Gandalf, telepathically(?): EMERGENCY RINGBEARERS ONLY CONFAB NOW
Gandalf: [mental image of a goddam Silmaril in hobbit hands, labelled “thisfuckingrockagain.jpg”]
Galadriel, who watched 95% of her family slaughter everyone within 100 miles for several thousand years over these things, including each other and themselves: no.
Elrond, who was very nearly one of those people slaughtered, and did watch most of his town be killed before he and his twin were kidnapped for a while: Absolutely Fucking Not.
Gandalf: Apparently fucking yes. The legendary Arkenstone-
Galadriel: You’ve got to be kidding me.
Elrond: Thorin Oakenshield has a Silmaril right now?
Gandalf: No, no.
Gandalf: Bilbo stole it.
Elrond: *wordless sputtering*
Gandalf: @Galadriel [information packet: BilboBagginsoftheShire.pdf]
Galadriel: Oh yes, Belladonna’s boy, you were telling me about him last winter.
Galadriel: Btw, orc+warg army probably coming your way. Spotted it in the mirror last night. Thank goodness we dealt with Dol Goldur at least, huh?
Elrond: No fucking shit.
Gandalf @Gwaihir Windlord: hey, sorry to bother you again, I know it’s nearly mating season. but we have a situation again
Gandalf: [thisfuckingrockagain.jpg]
Gandalf: [oncomingorcwargarmy.jpg]
Gandalf: [flashbacktobadasseaglesinwarofwrathhinthint.mov]
I mean, given that Tolkien retconned “The Hobbit” so Bilbo’s little invisibility ring became an ancient piece of jewelry that controls minds and drives the mighty mad, one can at least understand why it seems plausible that the other shiny white gem that destroys empires and makes the mighty go mad with greed could be linked from his kid’s book to his gigantic early mythology in retrospect??
You know this actually explains a lot about why Gandalf didn’t immediately raise the alarm about Bilbo’s ring out of an abundance of caution. I mean, what are the odds, what are the fucking odds, that this one little hobbit stole both a Silmaril and the Ring of Power? Like, you are Gandalf the Grey and you have already dealt with the heart attack to end all heart attacks because this little innocent fool stole a world war inspiring artifact once. You still get flashbacks every time Bilbo offers to show you something and have to employ all of your angel’s serenity and thousands of years of learned composure not start giBbERinG “ pleaseletitnotbeanotherartifactpleaseletitnotbeanotherartifact”. And then. AND THEN! One day he’s like, “hey Gandalf let me show you this neat ring I found back on our journey”. And on the inside a tiny part of you is screaming “nottheoneringnottheoneringnottheonering” while a more rational part of your brain assures you it could not possibly be the one- “It’s this plain gold ring that’s very precious to me and turns me invisible!”
AND THEN YOU FUCK OFF AND SEARCH THROUGH EVERY POSSIBLE TOME YOU CAN TO PROVE IT CAN’T REALLY BE THE RING OF POWER, SAURON’S RING OF POWER, THAT RING, THE ONE RING, LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE TOME, BEFORE FINALLY FUCKING ACKNOWLEDGING THAT THIS SHIT IS REALLY HAPPENING AGAIN
@shewhodoesnotexist what says you? :P
I’ve never been a proponent of this theory, but I gotta admit the idea of Bilbo finding two world war inspiring artifacts is alluring ;D
Next you’ll be telling me Sting is Gurthang
Sting may or may not be Angrist, the knife that Beren used to get the Silmarill off of Morgoth’s crown
“Average Hobbit finds at least one world war inspiring artifact when on a journey” statistic inaccurate. The Spiders Took Family, who find a world war inspiring artifact every five feet they step outside the Shire, were outliers and should not have been counted.
Actually the meaning of life is forcing all your friends to watch the extended editions of the lord of the rings at least once. Just so you know.

so @potatoobsessed999 and i finished our reread of the hobbit last night and i’m now fully and completely convinced that
arkenstone’s a silmaril
arkenstone is maedhros’ silmaril specifically
and this COULD be a post about how the arkenstone is described exactly the same as the silmarils are, or how thorin talks about it in the exact same way that the feanorians do, but for the moment i am skipping all of that because listen to me. just for a second here accept this as canon into your hearts because if this is so then that would mean.
that bard, a king who had his home destroyed by a great evil from the north and was willing to hold the glowing beautiful stone ransom to protect his people, willingly laid maedhros’ silmaril to rest with thorin, a king who had his home destroyed by a great evil from the north and who sought to retrieve the glowing beautiful stone that was the last remaining thing he had of his father.
and i just think that’s such a potent ending for the damn thing. there is the peace that was never achieved in the silmarillion. there is the sympathy that was never achieved in the silmarillion. the silmarils cannot come home to the feanorians, but they can come home to durin’s folk. they can find their home with a different people of aule. with a different people who have faced horror and death in their own home. with a different son who has lost his father who had lost his father, left to hold his people together. and it can do that because instead of being fought over, it was in the end given up freely.
and i just think that’s nice, actually.
EXCELLENT things happening in my notes thank you @manulpika
Today’s the day

#Smaug #I am Fire #The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug
Gandalf and Bilbo by Tim Kirk (1974)
Cool tumblr alert
One of the interesting things about Tom Bombadil is that his words have a very poetic rhythm even in prose. Take his first speech:
Whoa! Whoa! steady there! Now, my little fellows, where be you a going to, puffing like a bellows? What's the matter here then? Do you know who I am? I'm Tom Bombadil. Tell me what's your trouble! Tom's in a hurry now. Don't you crush my lilies!
It also fits very well with the "Hey dol merry dol" he often sings.
Ever since I noticed this, reading this part has been hard to do without saying his parts out loud. It's so neat!
The rhythm he constantly carries really makes me feel like he's a part of the land around him in a way, his voice is always lilting like rolling hills. It adds to the way it seems like trouble slides off him like water off a duck, he won't be caught, he won't get stuck and stagnant, he'll just keep flowing on as he always has done
Yes! This is something that I love, the way that Tom’s song-cadence spills out not only into his prose, but at places into the speech of the hobbits, into the narration, even into the speech of other characters who are far away and only talking about him.
He told them tales of bees and flowers, the ways of trees, and the strange creatures of the Forest, about evil things and good things, cruel things and kind things, and secrets hidden under brambles.
Frodo:
“Goldberry! My fair lady, clad all in silver green! We have never said farewell to her, nor seen her since the evening!”
And the one that really hit me, Gandalf at the Council of Elrond:
“And now he is withdrawn into a little land, within bounds that he has set, though none can see them, waiting perhaps for a change of days, and he will not step beyond them.”
It even spills over into meta! Your “he won’t get stuck and stagnant, he’ll just keep flowing on” has the same cadence!
Yes! I'm delighted to see that awareness of the fact that Tom Bombadil speaks in meter is spreading! I'm having real trouble describing it though. It's easy enough to tap out:
ONE TWO THREE four five, ONE two THREE four FIVE six
"Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow"
but he can add unstressed syllables pretty much wherever he wants.
"This is Goldberry's washing-day, and her autumn-cleaning"
Versifying by stresses rather than by syllables is characteristic of (unsurprisingly) Anglo-Saxon poetry. I enjoyed the discussion here.

why do you need to smoke weed before we take the ring to mordor is there something wrong with you
One of my early internet friends was a refugee child of Rohan, a fact that we took very seriously because we were like 12
One of my friends worked in a Wellington library. Her boss was the Witch King of Angmar.
This is the second "Witch King of Angmar is a librarian" contribution so I'm fully accepting it as fact at this point.
He’s googlable. Brent McIntyre.
I refuse to fact check anything. I just read comments on my posts and integrate them into my belief system based on vibes alone.
You know, it's kinda funny how much of high fantasy centers around kings and nobility and courtly intrigue considering that the archetypal high fantasy, Lord of the Rings, had the rather explicit moral of "saving the world is up to this backwater hick and his gardener because no politician, least of all inherited nobility, would have the ability to see past their own ambition and throw away a weapon". Oh sure, Aragorn is a great king and all, but there's a reason he's over there running a distraction ring while the hobbits do the real work. Sauron loses because he gets distracted by kings and armies and great battles (i.e. typical high fantasy stuff) letting Frodo and Sam sneak through his back door and blow it all to hell.
Just saying, maybe old Jirt knew what he was saying when he said that the small folk doing their best and holding to each other was more powerful than a dozen alliances and superweapons and we should respect him for it.
This might be the funniest reply I’ve ever seen in my life
I AM WHEEZING
