tanner dillon has gone from first line to third line in the last two seasons, but he's not mad about it. he's on a team with ilya fucking rozanov AND shane fucking hollander and they're definitely going for the cup this year, so what does it matter?
honestly, he's kinda glad he's not on hollander's line. the one time they tried that at camp tanner got so nervous he completely embarrassed himself in front of future hall of famer shane hollander. hollzy was really nice about it, though. he even bought him a beer that night!
so no, tanner isn't bothered he's on the third line now. the team's doing great and he's just happy to be in the room.
it's just... why does haasy keep glaring at him? every time hollander talks to him, he gets the stink eye from haas.
and sure, it's not like he and the kid were super close last season. haasy obviously never worshiped him the way he did roz, or even asked him for advice the way he did with bood. but they got along fine! he complimented the kid's drawings and haasy drew a spiderman for his niece.
and now the kid's constantly rolling his eyes or glaring at him. wait, could he have a crush on hollander? haasy came out to the team early in the season, and everyone's been chirping him about crushing on roz, but maybe now that they're on the same line he's all about hollzy? (valid, in tanner's opinion. if he was gonna try something with a guy, hollzy would definitely be at the top of his list.) maybe he thinks hollander likes tanner better, since he's always so nice to him. hollzy is pretty rough on his lineys. (another reason tanner's grateful not to be one of them)
it all comes to a head at practice one day. hollander compliments tanner on a nice pass as tanner skates past them, and by the time he's gotten his water bottle, haas and hollander are having a ferocious, whispered argument they seem intent on not letting the others hear. maybe hollander's telling him not to be jealous of a straight guy. maybe he's letting him down gently. hell, maybe he's inviting him to be his and roz's third, tanner doesn't fucking know.
whatever it is, it fixes the problem. after that, haas is perfectly nice to him again. in fact, he's nicer about tanner's hockey than he's ever been before.
"you almost had him," haas calls out after hazy just barely knocks away a puck tanner was sure was going in, and tanner can't believe he's on a team with the current and future greats of his sport and they go out of their way to compliment him.
