The thing about really long series is that they start to develop their own tropes. And if they go on long enough, they get the opportunity to subvert their own tropes.
There's a sort of running gag with the Star Trek engineers. Something will need to get done, the captain asks how long it will take, and the engineer gives an estimate. The captain will then say they need it done twice as fast, or more. They then usually pull it off somehow. This is the done thing. TVtropes calls it "Scotty Time", after the engineer from the first series.
We get this same interaction over and over across multiple series, from multiple different pairs of captains and engineers. By the later seasons of Next Generation they're already riffing on it. One scene establishes that the initial estimate is usually actually already longer than they'll actually need, because captains love to pressure their crews and the engineers know this, so getting it done in less time than initially proposed makes them look good. This ritual has by this point been established as Starfleet standard, seen in the original series, Next Generation, and prominently in Deep Space Nine.
So then we get to Star Trek Voyager, and we have our captain Janeway and our chief engineer B'elanna Torres, and we know how this is gonna go. In a season one episode, sure enough, Janeway asks that whatever needs to be done gets done in half the estimated time, and... Torres stops her. No, she says, it takes as long as it takes, it can't be done faster. And her face is dead serious. Janeway is momentarily surprised but doesn't protest. And it's some great characterization for both of them. It establishes Torres as an honest and hard working officer, a straight shooter who doesn't take shortcuts. She'll look her commanding officer in the face and just say the truth. And it establishes Janeway as someone experienced but not incapable of adapting to her crew. She knows how this interaction is supposed to work, but takes Torres at her word, and doesn't repeat this trope for the rest of the series. I like it a lot. Idk end of post
In addition in star trek lower decks theres a whole episode about how the entire cerritos crew always adds and uses "buffer time" to allow themselves more time to chill and do stuff in their own way (which for that ship makes some sense given the amount of miscellaneous non work related stuff they get into) while also making it seem more impressive to their senior officers when they do it faster than expected.
Also the ship falls apart quickly when this time is removed which frankly kinda tracks cause a lot of the starfleet officers we hear from usually have pretty strong personalities and their own ways of doing things efficiently
Can 1,000% validate that Scotty Time is used as the default standard when giving estimates of work completion to team leads, managers, and other forms of authority in the corporate world, especially if you’re in or within spitting distance of the creative industry.

Something else I would have liked to see more of throughout the series is Merlin just using his powers on instinct before he can stop it like when he saved Gaius from that fall.
It would’ve been cool to see Merlin struggling to contain all this power especially at the start of the series while he’s still learning to harness his magic:
Like maybe Arthur throws something at Merlin while half paying attention but Merlin’s magic stops it midflight and he has to quickly unfreeze and take the hit to avoid suspicion
Gwen asks Merlin to pass her the washing but it’s moving before he can even get his hands on it and Merlin has to scramble after it to grab the basket midair
Merlin’s carrying a meal up to the princes chambers and trips, his magic catching him and the tray of food and quickly righting them both, and Merlin glances around to see if anyone noticed
Gaius asks him to light a candle and suddenly every wick in the room is lit before he can even finish his sentence
It’s only after Gaius gives Merlin the spell book that he learns any kind of control, but even then, there would still be moments of panic or excitement that cause his magic to flare on instinct
Merlin is so sexy when he can do magic unrestrained by needing to hide it and this is one of the 396 reasons it’s a crime that we never got Merlin truly able to do magic at will
The confrontation where he kills Agravaine is deadass one of my favorite scenes in THE ENTIRE SHOW because it’s one of the only ONLY times that he COMPLETELY drops the ruse. No mask, no pretending to be the mysterious old wizard, no holding himself back. He hits that dead end and he turns around and you can SEE IT IN HIS FACE: he’s out of ways to avoid or pretend or hide and he knows it, so he doesn’t care anymore. Agravaine can see he has magic because Merlin knows for a fact that Agravaine’s about to die. Because he’s about to kill him.
He spends a lot of the show being traditionally heroic and compassionate but the show commits just far enough to Merlin prioritizing Arthur above literally anything else that it gives him a darker side—Merlin will do anything for Arthur. Anything. Lie, murder, condemn the entire next generation of magic users, anything. And it’s so fucking tasty and terrifying and I wish we’d gotten to explore the dynamic where he isn’t confined by having to hide the limits of what he can do so badly.
