chipped
Man, this is such a perfect analogy. “Chipped”… Just damaged enough for it to show at times, but not nearly broken enough to warrant fixing. And so often does the chipped cup turn itself to show its undamaged side.
someone put it in words

Every single day this month has been like Okay sure. Okay sure what the hell. Okay sure. I guess
i NEED people to realise foreshadowing is. in fact. a literary device. and not a Bad Thing. the audience picking up on your hints is a Good Thing. because. it makes the story and it’s conclusion make sense. and some people will not see those but enjoy seeing them on a second read through. red herrings are one thing but if your novel consists of nothing but red herrings it’s not a coherent story it’s just a collection of paragraphs that don’t actually plausibly link to one another. you're not fighting with the audience you don’t look clever you look like you don’t know how basic fiction works. be vulnerable for once in your goddamn life and don't treat writing like a game to be won where the audience losing is a good thing.
I've asked this question before and been surprised by the results, now I have access to more weirdos it's your problem:
It is the middle of a Sunday afternoon. You have nothing on, and aren't expecting visitors, deliveries or post.
Unexpectedly, there is a knock at the door.
Which of these would surprise you more to find on the doorstep?
Fairy
Walrus
Not naming options to skew votes but...
I think there's something fundamentally baffling with the way most of you think.
Happy birthday to this iconic poll
wow if only everyone warned you about AI hallucination.
Maybe it would help people stop making these kinds of mistakes (and falling for AI advertising that claims that it can handle this sort of thing) if we explain that generative AI actually never “hallucinates,” because that would require it to have a mind that can perceive and believe.
Instead, it’s doing exactly what it was designed to do, as a Large Language Model: it’s stringing a whole bunch of sentences and paragraphs together as an ultra-sophisticated autocomplete.
Sometimes those ultra-sophisticated autocompleted sentences, when interpreted by humans, will appear to be true. Other times, they will appear to be false. The AI itself has no idea whether its outputs are true or false—in fact, it has no idea what “true” and “false” mean, or what anything means. It’s just a pattern-recognition algorithm going “This word often follows that word in this context” a few dozen or hundred times in sequence until it finally goes “This word often ends things in this context” and stops.
Let’s all stop using and expecting fancy autocomplete to do anything except fancily autocomplete—especially when the people trying to sell it to us claim it can do so much more.

And the millionaires aren't going anywhere, for the most part.
Excellent update on year 2 of this program:
Last May, we were very happy to report that the Millionaire Tax instituted in the state of Massachusetts was working out very well, not scaring off all of the rich people, and raising funds for necessary education and transportation initiatives. The state had raised $1.8 billion — $800 million more than they predicted — and none of the terrible things the naysayers had predicted happened at all. But how are things going a year later? Even better! The tax has now generated $3 billion more than expected, for a total of $5.7 billion that has been spent on projects that are positively benefiting Massachusetts residents and “being used to bridge repairs, bolster literacy programs and address the transportation system’s budget deficit.” In case you need a refresher, the tax is a 4 percent tax on anything people make over a million dollars.
Official Post of Massachusetts
This article has a great way of framing tax alarmists for the hypocrites they are. It’s woven neatly through the whole article, but this quote really sums it up:
Sure, people complain. Rich people are always going to complain about taxes. But they never flee the way they threaten to, largely because whether or not they like to admit it, they prefer to live in the kinds of areas where things are made nicer by the taxes they don’t want to pay.
Tax the rich. Most of them won’t notice and even more of them won’t care
This was what I was referencing, when I said that higher taxes don't actually impact their quality of life any but moving does.
the lesbian computer from portal was right. given the circumstances ive been shockingly nice
insane like/reblog parity on this post btw
