spoilers for wotr
Been thinking about my favourite bit of camp interaction (excluding any time camellia is throwing a tantrum about doing chores) is when Sosiel and Seelah are sat and he says something like
"I saw this soldier, no more than a young girl, she had no life left behind her eyes, she isn't returning from the war, even if she survives"
Seelah, normally jolly in all things, locks the hell in and is like
"Sosiel, you know that none of us are returning from the war right?"
and this like, stuck with me. So many things in the game are about the fact that there are some things that push you too far to fully heal from (from the burning lance, the origin of the neathers, Arue's shadow, even the fact that the land corrupted by the abyss cannot heal)
And Sosiels endings summarise that so nicely. He... gives up adventuring, goes home, refuses to speak of the war. Maybe he gets married or has happier versions, but I dont think there's an ending where he doesnt refuse to pick up a weapon again. He is the dead-eyed girl who can't quite move past the things hes seen
The other characters who dont quite struggle as much after the war are erm... Well, its Cam (for obvs reasons), Wendu and Lann (who both already lived short miserable lives), Regil does old man business, Daeran deals with the trauma of his life in his own cruel daeran way. Grebor was a hardened killer and general scum already
And then we have Seelah, who is meant to be a proud paladin. A normal, good human being, and yet in her endings, shes sometimes a little bit conflicted, but never does she seem to bare the same scars of fighting the abyss as everyone else (who isn't a serial killer, or started in a truly god awful position). It seemed so weird.
But then I remembered another camp interaction between ember and seelah, where basically seelah goes
"this was is so hard on every good person"
and ember, the little rascal goes
"then why isnt the war hard on you?"
Seelah kinda relishes in the demon war, she relishes in vanquishing evil, and that leaves her borderline blind to the corpses she's wading through, even as every other saneish companion is gagging and struggling to sleep. Kinda wish there was a path where, idk, she slows down and realises the toll she's inflicted on herself.
Many places have a "forest that shouldn't be entered." Even people who are used to working in the mountains feel there is something there. They are suddenly overcome with fear and it becomes the custom to avoid certain places. These places exist. I don't know what is there, but I think they are real . . . The world is more than we can fathom with our five senses. The world doesn't exist just for humans. So I think it is all right to have such things. This is why I think it's a mistake to think about nature from the idea of efficiency, that forests should be preserved because they are essential for human beings . . . I am concerned, because for me the deep forest is connected in some way to the darkness deep in my heart. I feel that if it is erased, then the darkness inside my heart would also disappear, and my existence would grow shallow.

Gotta compliment him on his reflexes. No hesitation. Just described exactly what he was seeing, regardless of what it was.

He says, "um," then immediately points to the screen and confidently announces, "this is baby spinach." /End VD]

“Pratchett went back to older throwaway jokes (like dwarves being apparently unisex) and used them as metaphors to discuss social change, racial assimilation, and other complex issues, while reexamining the species he’d thrown in at the margins of his world simply because they existed at the margins of every other fantasy universe. If goblins and orcs and trolls could think, then why were they always just there to be slaughtered by the heroes? And if the heroes slaughtered sentient beings en masse, how heroic exactly were they? It was a long overdue start on redressing issues long swept under the rug by a parade of Tolkien successors who never thought of anyone green and slimy as anything but a notch on the protagonist’s sword, and much of the urgency in Pratchett’s last few books seemed to be related to them. ‘There’s only one true evil in the world,’ he said through his characters. ‘And that’s treating people like they were things.’ And in the last of his ‘grown-up’ Discworld books, that idea is shouted with the ferocity of those who have only a few words left and want to make them count. Goblins are people. Golems are people. Dwarves are people, and they do not become any less people because they decide to go by the gender they know themselves to be instead of the one society forces on them. Even trains might be people, and you’ll never know one way or the other unless you ask them, because treating someone like they’re a person and not a thing should be your default. And the only people who cling to tradition at the expense of real people are sad, angry dwellers in the darkness who don’t even understand how pathetic they are, clutching and grasping at the things they remember without ever understanding that the world was never that simple to begin with. The future is bright, it is shining, and it belongs to everyone.”

i know the way people talk about their pets now is probably how we’ve been doing it for all of history. a cat owner in ancient rome saw their cat lounging on the dining pillows and commented “he thinks himself to be the senator claudius 🤣”
The first attested cat in Japan was given to a young 9th century emperor and his diary about it includes such gems as 'I affixed a bow about its neck, but it did not remain for long.", "The color of the fur is peerless. None could find the words to describe it, although one said it was reminiscent of the deepest ink.", "When it lies down, it curls in a circle like a coin. You cannot see its feet. It’s as if it were circular Bi disk." and "I am convinced it is superior to all other cats.” Basically posting about how his void is the best little void and so good at getting really round

I don’t understand the sexual appeal of elves. Could you help clarify for me?
we're gonna start with the basics: imagine an ear that comes to a point
Being an adult will have you unironically craving a vegetable
Being an adult will have you unironically sad about a parasite outbreak in fresh vegetables.
