TRENCH COAT SWAP A THRONE OF GLASS ONE SHOT
PAIRING ROWAN WHITETHORN, AELIN ASHRYVER GALATHYNIUS
SOMETHING WAS NOT right.Something was not right at all.
Rowan Whitethorn triedpushing his arm through the sleeve again. The fabric strained over the measureof his forearm. Rowan frowned slightly, perplexed. Hadnāt he just worn this thenight before? In fact, he remembers this distinctly. He and Aelin had turned upin matching trench coats by coincidence, and Lyssandra had given them hell forit. Aedion had laughed one decibel too loud and Aelin threatened to exile him ānot that it had worked.
Still, the dark grey overcoathad mysteriously shrunk during the events of the night. The only thing Rowan couldthink of that would have caused this to happen was that heād used this as coverfor the rain, but cotton garbardine didnāt shrinkā¦did it? Wyrd, he spent half agood fortune on this. He huffed in annoyance, and laid it on the foot of hisbed. Heād deal with this later.
It was late when hereturned, and after a near-mortally-jarring incident with one of Maeveāsblasted spies, Rowanās nerves were hawk-sharp. The wind whistled by, andpointed ears perked up in resonance. It was dangerous, leaving Aelin out there withThe Bitchās lackeys scouring the place, and it took everything in Rowan to stayput.
He pushed the door open, andit stuttered slightly under the pressure of his impatience to get back. He shutthe door behind him and kicked off his footwear, taking a deep breath in hisfatigue. Suddenly his sense were jerked into attentiveness, and his eyesflashed in vague recognition.
The familiar smell wassubtle in the still air of the room, but the honey-sweet, floral lavender scentwas undeniably present, and a streak of happiness heād deny about later jumpedin Rowanās veins. What was she doing here, anyway? A subconscious instinctsuggested that something was wrong, and a tinge of urgency surged through him.He followed the trace of the smell, and ended up in his roomā
-to find nothing. He whirledaround. The scent was still detectable, here. This was distinctively where it lingered. His brows furrowed in confusion. In the corner of his eye he saw the coat heād flungonto the bed carelessly. This many nonplussing events in one day was one toomany to be considered cāest la vie. Hebent down to pick it in resignation, sighing. Only when the belt fell throughthe belt loop did it draw his attention suddenly.
His trench coat didnāt havea belt. Not that his coat was ever this slight and well taken care of, but hehadnāt asked those questions earlier. Now he did. Rowan drew the collar to hisface and took a tentative whiff.
Oh. Oh. By the Wyrd, he felt like a halfwit. All this time, this coatwas Aelinās, and the thought hadnāt even crossed his mind. He stifled a laugh, burying his face in the coat out of mildly shy prudence. Aelin would laugh at him. Sheād probably figured outthe moment she left the inn, the prig. Sometimes, he mused, she was too smartfor her own damned good.
He was moving to hook it upon the coat hanger, but the weight in the left pocket distracted him. When he reachedto spill its contents, the button that partially sealed the pocket seemed to glareat him. He ignored it.
An empty case of lipstickthat disguised a vial of something he thought heād be better off not knowingabout, a small cluster of blue flowers (half crushed), a small vanity mirror, and some spare change. Rowan almost laughed at the things he found. Ā This was so Aelin, in words he couldnāt explain, and a covet fondness spreadthrough his chest. He thumbed through the right pocket, but there was nothingin it save for a chocolate wrapper that had been crumpled into a ball. He couldbarely hide his smile. Then he folded the coat into a neat square, and placedit on his bedside.
That night, he let the delicatereminder of his carranam lull him tosleep.
When Rowan next met Aelin toreturn her coat, she turned up wearing his oversized coat, not looking veryimpressed at all. He fought a smile as he flicked it over the top of her head, turning around to walk off.
āIāll have you know, yourlittle mistake caused me to buy a new coat.ā Huh. So she hadnātfigured it out. She threw his coat at him, and pulled on her own one. He turnedback to her halfway, watching as she stuffed her hands into her pocketsindignantly, and her expression grow confused.
When she drew out the newbar of chocolate and looked up to meet his gaze, he feigned indifference andstarted to walk away again. And when she smirked and said, āThank you, asshole,āhe snorted loudly in reply.
