Do we think Donna Tartt had a detailed idea in her mind of what exactly Henry's accident was, or did she throw it in to add to his mystery, and didn't expect that thirty years on people would still be speculating about what happened?

This is out of character, but I felt I should make this for reference (even if it's way past when I first made this blog..)

henry found himself unable to sleep. for once, it wasn’t his mind that kept him awake, but rather the memories that plagued him. he doesn’t remember the sound of the crash, metal curving in on itself, the screams and the hot blood coating his hands, but rather those blue, distinct eyes he knows so well. instead, bunny’s smile, his unkept tufts of blonde hair, and his laughter returned to him with startling clarity. the smirk which exposed the curves around his mouth, the whites of his teeth and the dimples nearest his mouth that henry found himself tracing with his eyes. the silk sheets, however expensive, didn’t feel like a comfort but rather a burden, as henry thinks of bunny’s own skin he’d rather wrap around himself instead. possession, he thought, and the word settled there, in the silent depths of his dark mind.

when bunny’s inexplicable cruelty intensified, he developed a repertoire of taunts, each more vicious than the next. he had managed to alienate himself from the group through his growing ruthlessness, and over time, became unanchored and adrift without his enclave. bunny selected particular insecurities, magnifying them and making them feel monumental. of them all, however, it was henry who became the victim of bunny’s blind anger. in private, in a rather boisterous manner, bunny would mock henry for his homosexuality. he would often call henry slurs, remind him how unnatural and how disgusting his relationships with men (including bunny himself) were. this, henry often reflected, seemed to be the end of their relationship. after bunny’s eventual demise, henry looked back on those rather unpleasant moments to try to reassure himself. henry told himself that, by killing bunny, he had protected the one true secret he harboured close to his heart. that he loved bunny corcoran.
