just throwing this out there
in happier pride news i actually found this deeply heartwarming
that's solidarity baybeeee
Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.
At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.
Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”

at least can all we agree that the original gay flag with the magic and sex colours is BEAUTIFUL and it should make a comeback
what’s more iconic than this
What about the final version of the flag by the original creator?
Gilbert Baker added a 9th stripe shortly before his death, with the new stripe representing diversity. He added this stripe in reaction to the 2016 US election. It’s unfortunately not as well known as the 8 and 6 striped versions.
Here’s an image of him sewing together the 9 striped rainbow flag.
Happy pride month everyone
As an older queer, allow me to say: the walls of the closet are load-bearing. It is our job as a community to stand in front of that door and tell everyone who wants to peek inside to fuck off.
There are so many reasons a person may choose not to come out and there is no reason a person would owe the public or a stranger that information. Certainly it's not owed simply because someone is famous.
We have fought for decades to make it safer for people to be open and authentic about themselves, but we are not yet there. And even if we were, the closet would still be something we need to maintain for those who are not ready to reveal that part of themselves.
May we never become so obsessed with representation that we forget the sanctity of privacy.
Litmus test: if you live in a world where Coming Out exists, the closet must be allowed to exist
because it means you live in a world where sexuality and gender are assumed go have a norm, and those who reinforce that norm will harm people outside it. if we are being placed Outside, we need an Inside to shelter us from that wrath
the immediate alternative is not liberation, because that is a process that takes time. until it occurs, the alternative is leaving everyone who is exposed and vulnerable without a viable shelter
my top funny colonial/early American names, in no particular order
Unite Cox (male, 1752-1816, Malden, Massachusetts)
Pleasant Cock (male, dates unclear; mentioned in a diary from 1777 of the writer's travels through Virginia)
Submit Cox (female, 1702-c. 1735, Dorchester, Massachusetts. later married and became Submit Maudsley)
Preserved Fish (male, 1766-1846, New York)
Increase Mather (male, 1639-1723, Boston, Massachusetts)
Not the right time frame, but my favorite name captures the spirit of this list:
Experiance A. Quakenbush (1825-1908, Manalapan, New Jersey)

I’m going to level with you. I have listened to The Devil Went Down to Georgia for most of my life. We were a country music household, this was a staple of my childhood along with Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, and that one Chipmunks country album.
I have no idea what “Fire on the mountain run boys run/The Devil's in the house of the rising sun/Chicken in the bread pan picking out dough/Granny does your dog bite no child no” means and at this point I’m too scared to ask.
For once I can be of assistance.
Each of the lyrics comes from an old-time hickory song for fiddles, and is a lyric from that corresponding song.
"Fire on the Mountain" --> "Fire on the Mountain, run boys run"
Fire On The Mountain - Fiddle Player POV
"The House of the Rising Sun" --> "The Devil's in the house of the rising sun"
House of the Rising Sun
"Ida Red" --> "Chicken in the bread pan peckin' out dough"
Ida Red - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys
"Granny Will Your Dog Bite" --> "Granny does your dog bite? 'No child, no'."
FTC #149 Granny Will Your Dog Bite
And for your furthered education, The Mountain Whipporwill.
Mountain Whippoorwill (aka How Hillbilly Jim Won the Great Fiddler's Prize)
this is the key part of the song, that a lot of people miss. people have this misconception that the contest between Johnny and The Devil is about who is the better fiddle player. but it isn't. its about who is the better fiddler.
in a time before things like radios and record players, every time you heard music was because there was somebody in the room with you playing an instrument. and many, many, many social events involved dancing, which requires music. so, if you're planning any kind of gathering in the american south or appalachia, you need to find a fiddler. and the fiddler's job is to play music that everybody knows and likes and can dance to.
the mistake The Devil makes in his bet with Johnny is that he misinterprets the contest as being about technical ability, so he has this big flashy song. he plays fast and impressively with a band of demons playing unfamiliar instruments in unfamiliar rhythms. he's definitely more skilled at playing than Johnny, and thinks he has it in the bag.
but Johnny wins because the contest is about being the best fiddler. the song uses these lines mentioned above as a shorthand for saying that Johnny is playing these songs. Johnny launches into a set of the most popular songs, played well, and that's what gives him his big win. A good fiddler knows all the hits, and can read the room to know what to play next. The Devil loses because he completely fails to read the room, and doesn't know the right songs.
I know people like to clown on aspects of classic Disney films that don't feel grounded in reality. But I've worked both front and back of house in restaurants of varying quality. And if I found out our line cook or something served a full plate of spaghetti to two dogs in an alley, I would consider that like. Like not good. But possible.
I've said it before, I will say it again. Tramp was shown latter in the movie to be a ratter. It is not at all farfetched to think that he might have once hunted a bunch of rats that threatened the restaurant and so the head chef considers him a valuable ex-employee and friend.
Outdoor cat owners have no concept of basic ecology and it shows. "You're saying my kitty is EVIL for following its instincts???????" obviously not, you idiot, its an animal. I don't blame it because it is designed to hunt and doesn't understand human morality. The cat's human owner, though, should stop pretending that millions of people letting their pets hunt native species for fun WON'T make their ecossystem collapse. If you stop hearing birdsong in your neighborhood its your fault 👍.
Also cats are domestic animals????? Its your pet. Its your responsability to take care of it and it certainly doesn't look like you are doing this if your pet spends 90% of the day on the streets. Outside cats are in great risk for being ran over, stolen, beaten, poisoned, mauled or eaten by wild animals. A mildly bored cat is way better than a dead one and besides? Just offer your pet enrichment. You don't need to risk its life to keep it happy. You can even let it outside with supervision!! Look how many options we have. Insisting the only way to keep your cat happy is allowing it to wreck the environment and possibly die is not only fucking irresponsible, but also lazy and shows that you don't really care for the wildlife around you.
I live in a neighborhood with so many outdoor cats. They will fight in our front yard at night. They will sneak onto our back porch. We have a dog who hates cats. He has actively chased them from our yard, and if a time ever came when he happened to catch up to one, it would be a bloodbath.
Our neighborhood is near a field that happens to be home to at least one coyote. I have seen that coyote wander down the road and people have even spotted it in fenced backyards before. I'm sure one reason it dares to wander into backyards is because it knows there are cats wandering freely around here.
The red tailed hawks in the area may not be large enough to carry off most full grown cats, but that doesn't mean they won't try.
Raccoons aren't exactly nice to cats either.
And i can easily point out several houses, including my own, with flowering plants out front that could absolutely make a cat sick or worse. Lilies, for example.
Even before tackling the problems of cars, malicious people, poison from pest control, or the ecological damage cats themselves cause, just the fact that other people will decorate their own yards with plants that can poison a cat should be enough of a reason to keep them inside!
Hell, just the fact that you don't know what they're doing or when they'll be back should discourage you from letting a cat wander outdoors! Anything could happen out there! You don't know what they're eating, you don't know what injuries they might get, what diseases they could come home with, or anything. That's scary! Just keep them inside!
Hozier's mention of the word "hushpukena" (a Choctaw word) in the song Butchered Tongue was, of course, not a random decision. In a song about the pain of being disconnected from your ancestral language and culture as a result of colonization and oppression from outside forces- which is something that both Irish and Native American people have experienced to varying degrees. Not only do Irish and Indigenous people have this shared history of colonization at the hands of the British, but Irish and Indigenous communities have a long history of support for one another.
The usage of "hushpukena" is even more specific and important because it calls back to the mutually positive relationship between Irish and Choctaw people specifically. During the Great Hunger in Ireland, the Choctaw Nation donated $170, which is more than $5,000 in today’s money, to aid the Irish. Out of all American aid given to Ireland during the famine, the donation from the Choctaw Nation was the largest donation given.
In 1990, leaders from the Choctaw Nation visited County Mayo in Ireland to participate in the first annual Famine Walk. In 1992, Irish people visited the Choctaw Nation and participated in a trek to commemorate the Trail of Tears. Also in 1992, a plaque commemorating the Choctaw's aid was installed in the house of the mayor of Dublin. In 1995, the Irish President Mary Robinson visited the tribal headquarters of the Choctaw Nation to thank the Choctaw people for their aid. In 2017, a sculpture named "Kindred Spirits" was built in Cork, Ireland to commemorate the Choctaw's aid and to continue friendship between the two communities. In 2018, the Taoiseach (prime minister) of Ireland visited Choctaw tribal headquarters and stated,"A few years ago, on a visit to Ireland, a representative of the Choctaw Nation called your support for us ‘a sacred memory’. It is that and more. It is a sacred bond, which has joined our peoples together for all time". In 2020, more than $1.8 million was raised by Irish people as aid for Native American people (specifically the Navajo and Hopi) during the pandemic, to help provide food, clean water, and health supplies.
I think disability justice would be easier if abled people understood that being disabled is a mixture of all three of
I can’t do that without negative consequences
I can’t do that unless I have support for it
I can’t do that
and that trying to treat one of these as if it’s another one will get you nowhere.
I like this sandwich because sometimes 1 is what means 2 is necessary, ie. if I do that without support it will have negative consequences. (call it 1.5 if you will)
and sometimes the implied 2.5 is: because I can't do that, "support" means doing it for me.
but depending on the condition or disability, these numbers fluctuate. Some things that are normally a 1 or even a 0 (I can do that) can become a 2 or 3 on a bad day. no amount of pleasing or reasoning is gonna reset those numbers.

@asteroidtroglodyte you know why I taggeth you~
I wanna talk about Brown.
The Greys, with their extremes, White & Black, are symmetrical mixtures of the 3 wavelengths we can perceive. I phrase it this way to highlight that Brown is the color space for all of the asymmetrical mixtures of all three colors.
Indoorsy folks and the artistically disinclined can tend to think Brown is boring, because their principle experience with Brown is chromatically homogenous brown liquids, like coffee, tea, brown-painted surfaces, etc.
Outdoorsy types, and Artists with a good Eye, on the other hand, often find that natural Browns are rich in detail and often quite beautiful, once the internal structure of their mix is revealed:
But really Seeing, not just Looking, is a skill, like the rest, and just because of how time works the most experienced folks are gonna be older. Makes sense we’d care about Brown more.
In particular, brown is complex asymmetrical mix of wavelengths – all, not just those perceived by our eyes – where most of them falls somewhere between Red, that we perceive as Red, and Yellow, that we perceive as Equally Distant From Red And Green. It's a shimmering complex mix of tones that primarily come from organic compounds.
Green means Chlorophyll, which means Plant Life That's Living And Transforming Light Into Itself Right Now;
Brown means Any Of Myriad Organic Compounds And Probably Lots Of Them. Brown means So Much Life Processes Happened Here. Brown means Life Was Here And Transformed This;
Green and Brown mean You Can Live Here.
Once you know this it's really hard not to fall in love with Brown.
Useful resource for a proper color theory lesson
