Bugs Bunny Rides Again (1948)
If any part of your plan involves the words βnobody could be that stupidβ, please be prepared to be proven wrong at any minute at a momentβs notice. Pay in mind that the person determined to prove you wrong may already be aware of this assumption, and is already approaching your current location at an alarming speed.
βit will be fine if people justβ
people will not just
In 2011 I attended an event called Bmore Fail, in which entrepreneurs in Baltimore talked about their failures and what they learned from them.
What I learned is that there is an inflexible rule about how people interact with systems. If your system would work perfectly if people Just Would, and yet they Donβt, then your system is bad and you should feel bad. Systems must be built with an eye toward βwill people actually do thisβ?
Recycling was a thing when I was a child. (The 70βs.) In my home in New York State, you could carry recyclables to a recycling center. Nobody did. Now in 2024 Baltimore there is a trash truck that comes every week to pick up my recyclables, and I and my neighbors fill our cans with objects that can be recycled, because a system was developed that was easy for busy people to do, and thereβs a lot of social pressure to do it β but the social pressure wouldnβt exist if it wasnβt easy to do. Only the most crunchy granola people bitched at you if you didnβt recycle in 1979, when it required a lot of effort. Now it is considered kind of on par with spitting in the street or leaving a dirty diaper on the diaper changing table in the bathroom instead of throwing it out, if you donβt recycle.
Your job as the system creator is to make it as easy as possible for people to do the right thing, and as hard as possible to do the wrong thing. This is why web forms have data validation (but too much data validation actually makes the forms harder, so hit the spot in the middle.) And if you want people to adopt social change, whether itβs environmentalism, accepting gay people, or whatever, make it as easy as possible. And donβt guilt people about not doing it until itβs as easy as possible; instead phrase things more like βwouldnβt it be cool ifβ. Itβs not the fault of the individual that they canβt get things done in a bad system. Fix the system.
if users regularly fuck up using a tool you made, and your answer is βyouβre holding it wrongβ, the next question you should ask is βwhy did i make this tool so itβs easy to hold it wrong?β
Thatβs the problem with making animal proof trash cans for parks. The animals tend to be far more motivated to open the difficult mechanism than the tourists do.

Movie about a depressed and rather morbid autistic man planning to commit suicide and picking up a number of odd jobs in an effort to raise enough money to meticulously plan and prepay for his funeral so his mother doesnβt have to worry about it after he is gone. He begins to connect with people and enjoy life for the first time while working part time as a greeter in the funeral home, helping an eccentric old lady organize her basement, walking 7 dogs and maintaining a feral cat colony for a guy with a broken foot, playing a number of bit parts in local ads and stocking the shelves at the convenience store at night. In the end, he has befriended many of his neighbors and he decides he does not want to die and goes back to school to become a funeral director instead.
He is popular at his funeral home gig because he keeps accidentally saying things that are very reassuring and death positive. Because he wants to die. He eventually donates his funeral fund to the old ladyβs granddaughter after her sudden death so she does not have to sell her grandmotherβs prized possessions to pay for her funeral.
The old lady gifts him one of her ceramic cats at the beginning of the film which he reluctantly accepts out of politeness. Near the end of the film, he adopts a friendly cat from the cat colony that looks remarkably like the ceramic cat and names it after her, signaling his commitment to surviving and caring for his cat the way the old woman lived for her ceramic collection.
At some point in the chronic illness you really do get tired of being tired of being tired all the time huh

when boy bands sing a love song addressed to the listener does that imply all 5-10 of them are in love with you at once. that seems like a lot of pressure i don't know if i want to be the nucleus of the boyband polycule.
Credit to @traskodjur for the original idea. Honestly, it's brilliant and I laughed so loudly!
