I don't know how to articulate this well, but I really fucking hate the way a lot of thin writers write fat characters. Like how men write women "breasting boobily" there is something so dehumanizing about how fat characters are often written. "He waddled", "he lumbered", the writer of the book I'm reading always mentions this characters "fleshy hand" when he does something with his hand. Like, we already know that he's fat. There is no need to describe everything he does as "doing it fatly".

something something extremely sexy when magic users resort to physical violence. yeah i have the power of god and anime on my side but i also have THESE HANDS. i cast Punch You In The Face. i take my magic staff through which i channel the vast energies of the elements and the cosmos and i cast Severe Concussion And Skull Fracture. casting time for xenoglossy too long, chose the quicker route of Stab You In The Throat.
Weâre gonna write poorly on purpose today
Set a ten minute timer and just write whatever comes to mind. Do NOT stop writing during this time. Continuous thought, go
Once youâre done, congratulations! Youâve written a draft. Edit it if you wish, making as many changes as you so desire, even if it turns out to be completely different. Editing it will help teach your brain that you can indeed make it better later
You did it. You wrote something without editing as you went. Great job!
very important for elf characters to freak the fuck out about the aging difference thing and pre-grieve like crazy and scream themself hoarse with denial when they canât stop death itself and they still look the same as when they met the frail aged body thatâs going cold beneath their touch and eventually settle into a numbness that theyâll call acceptance but they never really let anyone get as close as they did in the first century of their life unless they know theyâre going to stick around as long as they will
âwhy are elves so snobby and exclusive and cut-off from everyone elseâ befriending you means theyâll end up burying you and your children and your grandchildren and theyâll still be young. exactly how many times do you think you could choose to do that. if you live through enough centuries, eventually you run out of days in the year to visit each grave.

people will say âtheyâre only friendsâ and then show me two people who would crawl through broken glass to hear the other laugh once. two people who have memorized each otherâs coffee orders, fears, childhood stories, and emergency contacts. two people who would haunt each otherâs houses as ghosts. be serious.
Just an FYIâthe original intention of this post was to challenge the way people say only friends, as though friendship is somehow lesser than other forms of love. As if being deeply known, cherished, and chosen by another person could ever be a small thing. Normalize profound platonic love. Some of the most fulfilling, transformative, and enduring relationships we will ever have are friendships. đŤśđź
used to think it terribly silly (and kinda funny) when fantasy or sci-fi stories would have people refer to major recent historical events as The Flood or The Incident or The Revolution, and im sure historians fucking hate that because it's not helpful or descriptive, but we sure do be calling it The Pandemic

the idea that a sex scene in fiction is fundamentally useless/simply for audience titillation UNLESS theyâre fucking infodumping exposition while they bone or something is so funny and myopic to me. like, you really genuinely believe for real that there is NOTHING to be gained about your understanding of a story or characters simply from how they approach and engage in sex? really for real?
i'm not convinced that art only has something to offer us when we personally want to participate in the activities being depicted

I see Zuko always heralded as the archetypal Perfect Redemption Arc in tumblr media analysis and while I can agree with that sentiment, it's important to realize his trajectory was actually very specific.
Because Zuko started as a good person, before he got the scar.
And Zuko has an extremely stable platform of support for most of the show.
Zuko couldn't have done it without Iroh's unflinching, unwavering belief that he could become a good person again. I've rarely seen any criticism of Iroh aimed at his unconditional support of Zuko- for good reason. It's a selfless act.
Similarly, I've rarely seen any criticism of Zuko saying that he didn't deserve Iroh's support. Maybe a few comments here and there about how ungrateful he is at times, or how he should have "suffered more"(?), but never anything outright saying that Zuko should stay exactly where he is in his misery because he doesn't deserve Iroh's helping hand out of it. And this is for a very specific reason- because A:TLA goes out of it's way to show very early on that Zuko was a good person and can be so again.
So Zuko's arc isn't really even a straight redemption arc. It's a recovery arc wearing a large redemption trenchcoat.
This is an important distinction because a raw, straight redemption arc is often unpalatable to the audience, because it starts with someone who isn't a good person receiving a helping hand out of their misery anyway. A redemption arc starts by looking like someone is forgiving an abuser. It starts by having sympathy for the bad people. It starts by engaging with them and listening to them and empathizing with their struggles.
"But they're a bad person, they don't deserve that kindness!" that's the point.
Certainly not to say that it's the job of the victim to be that understanding, helping hand- of course not. And extending kindness does not mean abandoning moral principles and not holding the person accountable for their actions, a la certain flavors of Harley Quinn-Joker romance nonsense.
But someone has to treat the bad person like they're a person if the bad person is ever going to stand a chance of getting better. Regardless of what the bad person "deserves". The bad person has to accept that help, of course, but there needs to be help (and more importantly, kindness) offered in the first place.
(Oh, and. . . this applies to real people just as much as it does fictional characters.)

This isn't very hard when you know some of the most genius strategies in human history were incredibly stupid, circumstantial events that led to victory by sheer luck of that strategy working.
Case in point: Tsun Zu's rival defended a city with 10 men against Tsun's army of hundreds by disarming his own soldiers, dressing them in plain clothes, INVITING Tsun's army to come in, and it only worked because Tsun knew the guy was an ambush master and thought "if we attack the city he's inviting us into, we will die." and left without even trying ON THE BASIS OF HIS RIVAL'S REPUTATION AND NOTHING MORE
Another example: Tsun Zu, on being told his soliders were out of arrows during a battle against a city across a river from them, had his men craft scarecrows, put them on a boat, send it out on a line, leave it there for half an hour, then pull it back in and used the arrows the enemy had fired at the boat to restock their own ammunition. It only worked because it was foggy and the enemy couldn't tell the difference between the scarecrows and actual soldiers.
Stupid things like that work INCREDIBLY WELL if the circumstances favor them, so you really don't need to come up with some multi-layered, Shikamaru-esque strategy. You just need to come up with a strategy you like for the characters involved, then write the circumstances (weather, environment, individuals involved) to favor it enough that it works.
Even better cheatsheet: Study history, steal liberally. Those genius plays listed above? Free for the taking, and I guarantee 99% of your audience will have never heard of them.
True genius is simply in knowing how the guy before you did it.
Tips for writing those gala scenes, from someone who goes to them occasionally:
Generally you unbutton and re-button a suit coat when you sit down and stand up.
Youâre supposed to hold wine or champagne glasses by the stem to avoid warming up the liquid inside. A character out of their depth might hold the glass around the sides instead.
When rich/important people forget your name and theyâre drunk, they usually just tell you that they donât remember or completely skip over any opportunity to use your name so they donât look silly.
A good way to indicate you donât want to shake someoneâs hand at an event is to hold a drink in your right hand (and if youâre a woman, a purse in the other so you definitely canât shift the glass to another hand and then shake)
Americans who still kiss cheeks as a welcome generally donât press lips to cheeks, itâs more of a touch of cheek to cheek or even a hover (these days, mostly to avoid smudging a womanâs makeup)
The distinctions between dress codes (black tie, cocktail, etc) are very intricate but obvious to those who know how to look. If you wear a short skirt to a black tie event for example, people would clock that instantly even if the dress itself was very formal. Same thing goes for certain articles of menâs clothing.
Open bars / cash bars at events usually carry limited options. Theyâre meant to serve lots of people very quickly, so nobody is getting a cosmo or a Manhattan etc.
Members of the press generally arenât allowed to freely circulate at nicer galas/events without a very good reason. When they do, they need to identify themselves before talking with someone.
As someone who spent over a decade catering luxury events, let me add some back of house info:
These events are almost always open bar. They're not trying to make their money back on alcohol. They want you to drink and eat and donate generously.
If there are cocktails, there will be at most two on offer, pre-made in large tubs. You cannot order a different version, it is what it is.
There are two types of events: cocktail style or seated. The first includes roaming hors d'oeuvres or a fancy buffet with tiny plates called a grazing station. For a long night, the roaming food will get a little bigger throughout the evening and have a 'main' at some point based around a protein.
A seated event will usually be more structured and may include multiple courses. Silver service is not in vogue anymore. You are likely to get either alternating meals brought to you like at a wedding, or served banquet style. A good caterer can get a plate to everyone in a 300 person event in about three minutes.
Drunk people are the same no matter how expensive their suits. They still laugh too loud, spill their drinks and slip on the dance floor. They are usually less embarrassed about doing coke in the bathrooms.
A full scale event that starts at 6pm will have staff arriving at noon to begin setup. Earlier if there's a light show or pyrotechnics. Typically venues don't just have 30 tables and three hundred chairs lying around, let alone table cloths, chair covers, etc. It's all rented and brought in on the day. Bands and DJs will be running audio tests in the background throughout.
Most heritage buildings that host these things, like museums and manor houses, aren't really designed for them. They might put down mats so you're not walking in stilettos over two hundred year old wooden floors, the kitchens are weirdly far away, and there are not enough taps. There is never anywhere for staff to sit, so if you open the wrong door you might find half a dozen waiters sitting on upturned milk crates in a room full of million dollar paintings, eating the left over bread.
Really old buildings don't have enough bathrooms, which means the staff will be sharing with the guests.
Clean up starts the second the event ends, if not sooner. Unattended glasses will start to disappear first, then table decorations. When the timer ticks over, the lights come back on and exhausted staff strip the tables, pack up dirty glasses and unopened wine bottles and have to Tetris it all into the back of a van. The venue is booked for that day only, so everything has to be gone before anyone can go home. A large event that finishes at midnight might take until 3am to be cleared away.
These are very long and physically demanding nights for anyone working them. The staff all get to know each other, and will absolutely notice someone trying to sneak in wearing a borrowed uniform. They are not being paid enough to care.
Admitting my star sign was a mistake.
âOh, so thatâs why you are they way you are. Youâre two fire signs ruled over by water!â
Pretty sure itâs just the ADHD.
A fun thing to do whenever someone asks you your sign is to lie about your birthday. It still means listening to them attempt to explain your entire personality badly for a few minutes, but then you can undercut them as soon as it gets too annoying.Â
So, for a while I was doing mailroom/account followup work for a nonprofit, and on my firt day there, one of the ladies, âDebbieâ asked me when my Birthday was. Assuming she was planning office Birthday parties, I told her.
The next day she came in with my ENTIRE star chart with personality tropes, life advice, predicitons for my future and so on. Now, I donât go in for Astrology but I can tell when someone is making a well-meaning gesture and I can say âThank youâ and shut up.
Especially because I told her the Wrong Birthday.
See, my birthday is in the middle of a cluster of a whole bunch of family birthdays and growing up I used to have to share my Birthday with my older cousins and while thatâs not really a big deal (even fun if youâre older) it kinda sucks when youâre five and none of your cousins share your interests.
So mom made a deal with me: Weâd celebrate my âUn-Birthdayâ in January, when nobody else in the family has a birthday or anything else, and the ârealâ birthday would be my Cousinâs. I got my own birthday and they got a second party and it was fun.
As I got older, I just started using my Un-Birthday for everything except paperwork, becuase January is boring and bereft of holidays except the one thatâs really part of Xmas these days. On paperwork, I put my real one, but Iâve been celebrating my birthday in the wrong month for over 25 years now, and didnât think about it when she asked, and told her my Un-Birthday.
And for a few weeks everything was fine.
But Debbie had a RIVAL.
Another woman in the office âSharonâ was also big into Astrology and was convinced Debbie was Doing It Wrong, so when she was going over payroll, she saw my Legal Birthday, realized Debbie had filled out the chart wrong, and then proceded to drag Debbie on the company facebook group, and a bunch of astrology groups they were both in.
I found out when I came in three days later from a long weekend and Debbie burst into tears and sobbed âHOW COULD YOU LIE TO MEEEEEE???â
After an extremely garbled recounting by our coworkers, a talk with my manager about âHey yeah I donât think itâs Legal for Sharon to take my name and date of birth from Payroll and put it all over facebook?â, the manager had a talk about âI know you are all over 50 but this is NOT WHAT THE COMPANY FACEBOOK IS FORâ, Sharon was âremoved from the premesisâ and I finally got to sit down with Debbie.
I explained the slip-up and how I sort of have two birthdays and think of the January Birthday is my âRealâ one.
Debie looked up from where sheâd been sobbing into her tissue all morning, realization dawning on her less like the illumination of the sun and more like a baby sea turtle headed in the wrong direction because of light Pollution.
âOh!â She said âYouâre TRANS-ZODIAC! You might have been born as an Aries, but youâre really a Capricorn!â
As someone whoâs been hit by a minivan and gotten a minor skull fracture from it, Iâm pretty sure hearing that sentence gave me more brain damage.
âSure Debbie.â
You know, I had no idea where this ride was going to take us, but of all the outcomes I expected, that was not it.
What, and I cannot stress this enough, the fuck.
Debbie was a kind woman with room in her heart for all the people of the world and the critical thinking skills of a Sea Cucumber.

Historically, one of the most reliable sources of widespread banditry was rulers ramping up military recruitment for major wars, then cutting their soldiers loose afterwards without pay, leaving a bunch of heavily armed men with military experience floating around broke and homeless.
Knowing this, whenever someone jokingly refers to raccoons as "trash bandits", I get a vivid mental image of, like, a raccoon succession crisis leading to a raccoon civil war, the aftermath of which forced the former soldiers of the losing side (who are all raccoons) to take up the life of the raccoon outlaw.
actually how many significant female characters fitting this archetype can u think of? and i mean their arc and role being actually substantial
Women donât really get these arcs as much as men, but it does remind me of this quote.
