yaoi between two beautiful knights who keep ending up fighting each other but it turns out both of them are pretending to be men in order to be knights so its actually secret beautiful butch yuri. picture this
one is the handsome gentlemanly princely type with long hair riding on a white horse that all the ladies fawn over, the other is the badass grim bulky type with scars and a scowl and a big ass broadsword who always aura farms in the corner of the tavern alone
yep exactly
Itβs something I unquestioningly accepted about the world for all my adult life but with the benefit of hindsight, βElizabeth Bathory bathed in the blood of virginsβ absolutely reads like something your qanon addled grandmother would post about on facebook.
I actually looked into it for the article I did about lebian vampires for our queer magazine! Very surface-level research, but it was enough for that particular project. You are right, it was bullshit.
So, basing myself entierly on the Hungarian Wikipedia here: BΓ‘thori ErzsΓ©bet was a powerful noble woman at a time when women were losing political power. She'd inherited a lot of land from her husband, and, well. Should she vanish from the scene, that land could go to someone else who wants it more. So she was arrested for alleged murder with very little evidence, and imprisoned. The King actually wrote a letter asking her to be released, because, again, very little evidence, but that letter was ignored.
The first documented claims of the bloodbaths are from about a generation after her death. From what documents we have from her lifetime, she seemed to have been a perfectly nice noblewoman, only politically inconvenient.
Add to this: This story sounds EXACTLY like something that people in the Middle Ages would tell about someone they wanted discredited. See the blood libel accusations directed against the jewish community. If I wanted to smear the good name of a woman at that time, then "she KILLS beautiful, young girls and BATHES in their blood, because she is OLD AND UGLY and cannot accept that. Also she's GAY" would be a very good way of doing that.
(I strongly simplified everything, so please don't take this post as very informative.)
One time my dad came to family dinner all excited βyou know that show Sherlock? I hear fans are writing whole new stories for it onlineβ
And in perfect unison my sister and I yelled βDAD NO!β So vehemently he stopped in his tracks.
Then a look of dawning comprehension on his face.
βOh, this is like Kirk and Spock, isnβt itβ
And I died right then and there.

I consider myself a real hater but sometimes you really do go too far with haterism. once I had to break mutuals with someone bc they hated the entire art form of poetry and the final straw was when they started hateposting about soup. The food
hi op. every time I see this post I hear it in her voice
you know what? I want dragons with ontogenetic niche partitioning.
niche partioning is a concept from ecology wherein groups within a species expand into different ecological niches so they're not competing with one another, right? so for example, sexual niche partitioning happens when sexual dimorphism means that one sex eats different things / occupies different spaces / etc. as another within the same species. you have one species that occupies multiple niches within the ecosystem.
ontogenetic niche partitioning is when this happens as a result of developmental changes. paternal care tends to obliterate this partitioning--hard to have your juveniles eating something different from your adults if the adults are feeding them!--so we just don't see it very often in mammals or birds, but it's quite common in other species, especially invertebrates. for example, a caterpillar and a butterfly are examples of classic niche partitioning, even though every butterfly will occupy both niches over the course of its life. you don't have to have a big fancy chrysalis transformation to engage in ontogenetic niche partitioning, but those transformations are a pretty big sign that it's happening in a given species.
anyway, it's most common in vertebrates among fish, lizards and snakes these days, especially monitor lizards, where juveniles will occupy a different (often arboreal or otherwise sheltered) niche from adults and hunt different prey until they get big enough that the juvenile niche. there are some good reasons to think that some dinosaurs might have engaged in ontogenetic niche partitioning, especially the bigger species, too. we think sea turtles might do it, although that's hard to say because we don't know very much about sea turtle development once the hatchlings go back to the sea.
the neat thing about ontogenetic niche partitioning is that it allows a given ecology to host a much larger population size for a given species than would otherwise be the case, because the total space occupied by that species is spread across a lot wider niche space. this is especially relevant for, say, a large carnivore that eats livestock.
basically, what if dragons are just the very oldest, reproductively mature members of their species, and the common wall lizard or whatever is just a juvenile that might or might not survive long enough to reproduce? imagine if dragon eggs are very small with big clutches of little insectivorous hatchlings that are eaten by anything that comes by, any of which might have the potential to become a great fire-breathing monster if it lives long enough.
imagine that dragon society. do people know that the hatchlings and the dragons are the same species? (they might not: there are real examples of people mistaking ontogenetically niche separated groups for independent species in their own right.) if dragons are sapient but the sapience takes time to develop, what does that say about the nature of sapience itself? how does a society work and transfer wealth if you remove parental care?
so many possibilities.

Anna/Elsa (Frozen)
Lux/Jinx (Arcane)
Come on people, Elsanna was many kids first forray into non-canon and femslash shipping. They're so much in love that it is foundational to the movie. They deserve the win here.
i am not immune to a well choreographed fight scene with a fun song in the background
Arguably the primary appeal of RWBY.
I just saw a post where one of the comments was a woman saying that they don't care about the POV or internal life of female characters in general, and I didn't want to reblog that post because I didn't want to go after that specific person, but I did want to say:
If that is how you feel (regardless of what gender you are), if every time you read a female character (but only a female character) you think, ugh I don't care about them, they're so boring, female characters never have internal lives worth reading about, you need work on that.
I'm serious. Figure out what your hangup is, reevaluate how you're approaching stories, maybe get some therapy or talk to someone about it if you need to, and figure out how to get past your dismissal of female POVs as being worth reaing.
Because whatever problem you have with the internal lives or POVs of female characters, it's an issue you also have with women. It's not like female characters are somehow universally written as so fundamentally different from real women that everything you find so dull or shallow or annoying or uninteresting in those female characters is fictionalized--and, it's not like female characters are somehow universally written as so fundamentally different from male characters that everything you find so shallow or dull or annoying or uninteresting in those female characters isn't also present in those male characters in some very similar way.
And if your excuse is that men can't write women--read more things written by women. (Some men can write women well, but you should read things written by women anyway.)
Tl;dr: If you find yourself looking at every female character you read, or every Black character, or every disabled character, etc. and thinking that somehow none of them quite live up to the male/white/abled characters that you are used to reading, that's something you need to work on.

thank you ao3 for always delivering what i need alongside insights into strange and beautiful lands of which i have no knowledge
Brutalist maze, Seattle
its called Freeway Park and while it is one of the most interesting single examples of Brutalism in the united states and im proud of it, it is so poorly designed in terms of public safety that it has been renovated twice(?) but continues to be geographically troubling, as its design has facilitated a lot of murders over the years. it was the subject of a funny but gruesome article in the STranger in 2002 called Topography of Terror. the city doesnt keep official tally of how many murders or assaults have happened IN the park but two men in their 30s were stabbed nonfatally during a robbery there earlier this year, for example.
Suspect that building mazes is perhaps not conducive to public safety, outside of minotaur isolation scenarios.
in space no one can hear you moan like a girl
Ground control here, we can hear you just fine
halo lore is so fucking funny to me. all it really needed to be was 'youre john halo and youre a badass space marine that doesnt afraid of anything' but instead youre a war orphan created by the space CIA to be a robo-pinkerton to put down galactic worker revolts, but luckily whole hordes of you were created right in time for the most evil alien empire to ever exist to make first contact with us by nuking a planet to glass
also, the evil alien empire isnt doing this because theyre evil, their trio of space popes asked an ancient sacred AI what the fuck humans were and the ai was like 'oh those are ants that god loves more than you' and the popes immediately decided the only way to keep their cushy jobs and big dumb hats was to annihilate the human race. it almost worked, too! luckily, one of the robo-pinkertons is so freakishly lucky an AI noticed the statistical anomalies surrounding him and took him in as her favorite little meow meow and now they have a toxic co-dependent relationship and are going to nuke alien new york

the best piece of writing advice I got was from my creative nonfiction professor when I turned in Kill Yourself (a transgender metaphor, one of my favorites) which amounted to saying I'm not committing hard enough. The piece was somewhat gory and kinda painful but I wanted it to be visceral and he was literally the only one to see that. Every other person and professor would have said to make minor changes here and there but he was the one seeing I was holding back for the sake of the assignment. So, he told me to stop being scared and just write exactly what I wanted to say, to commit as hard as possible to the idea instead of testing the waters to see if im even allowed to. So I did, and he was right. The original lacked the conviction required to make the idea work, and the revision brought it to the level that truly let it shine
I won an award for this piece and I genuinely dont think I would have if I didn't get told to go harder. He was one of the only people in my life who truly just got it. A fantastic writer and story teller and part of it is that he's incredibly authentic, sometimes to his detriment.
Don't be afraid of your writing. It hurts putting your everything on display for everyone to see, but its only then when true beautiful writing can be created
