My Steam avatar is an anime catgirl doing a little animated sway from side to side, and it's turned out to be an unintentional inkblot test of sorts. If you look closely, it's really not that overtly sexual. She's wearing a cardigan, there's no cleavage or midriff shown, she doesn't have her tongue out, and there's nothing especially suggestive about the motion or cropping. And yet, something about it—the cardigan being skin-tone, the pink background, the semiotics of the catgirl, I'm not sure—makes a lot of people read it from a distance as unimaginably horny. There's a friend I was playing with multiple times and week and even after months she still felt the need to comment on it every time I logged on. Similarly, if you look closely, it is indeed clearly a catgirl, but she has short hair and baggy clothes so in a small form factor she looks a bit androgynous. This seems to really get people in Counter-Strike specifically. Last game, one of the enemies said to me "your mom doesn't love you, she wanted a man," and one of my teammates (a stranger) responded "leave my femboy alone." There was nothing else in my profile or what I'd said from which they'd be making those assumptions. It's kind of fascinating.

Idk how many young people are still on tumblr but as a college academic advisor please listen to me: it is fine to drop out of college. It’s great even. You can drop out of college if that is what is best for you. However. Please. For the love of god, actually drop your classes. Go to the registrar/your advisor/your student portal/whatever and withdraw from your classes. Do not just stop attending. If you just stop showing up, you will fail all of the classes you’re enrolled in. This will tank your GPA, and if you ever decide you want to go back to school for a specific career, those Fs will come back to bite you. My college program is fairly lenient for our field (healthcare) and still we have to turn away a bunch of students who don’t have a 2.5 GPA, and the reason is that they attended half a semester of college in 2000, dropped out without withdrawing, and ended up with a 0.0 GPA and 16 credits. It’s very tough to recover from that. Even if you think you’ll never go to college, please just withdraw from those classes. Depending on when you withdraw, you may still have to pay for them, but at least there will be a little W transcript that will save your GPA.

Several AI services (chatbots 🫩) are purposely addictive, the same way people can become addicted to gambling or shopping. We’ve literally seen in real time how ChatGPT has caused psychosis and delusions in people; it can have a huge affect on someones’s mental stability. Just because it isn’t substance-based doesn’t mean that doesn’t count as an addiction, and shaming people who are trying to move on and improve themselves is counterproductive. Im proud of that dude and his 4 month mark!

Ok is there something I’m not seeeing here? You haven’t actually backed up your statements. Neither of those seem to have anything to do with AI being “addictive” “the same way you can be addictive to gambling or shopping.” They are about psychological effects of AI use *of some sort*, but, uh, different ones? Nothing to do with addiction.

Specifically regarding AO3, there's the catch 22 that if artists can retain total control over how their work is used, AO3 would not exist. Plenty of creators have been adamant that they hate the existence of fanfic of their work, but we all kinda decided that they can die mad about it. The whole basis of the site's existence is allowing derivative work of other people's creations.
