I’m not here to be useful, I’m here for my own entertainment. Part of that is thinking about furry porn.

070: Xevious
CANON FIRE is made possible by the generous contributions of readers like you. Support more writing like this on Patreon. Thank you!
Buried as a footnote in English speaking games history, Xevious’ influence nonetheless reverberates across history. In Japan, Xevious was a cultural milestone the size of Space Invaders, establishing the format for arcade shoot-em-ups.
Cooked up as a response to the popularity of Konami’s Scramble, the initially humble seeming game presented a huge leap in technology and design. Designer Masanobu Endo envisioned a whole world for the game, with its own history, language, and aesthetic.
The enemies were not mysterious invaders, but a previous human civilization coming back to reclaim the earth, inspired by the thought that time itself could make our own people alien to us. Instead of endless starfields, Xevious took place across forests and plains, complete with bases and roads that enemies would travel along, taking place on a one contiguous map, with only large forests hiding the transitions between stages.
Alongside details such as the incorporations of the real world Nazca Lines, it gave Xevious a tangible sense of place, with actual history, instead of an abstract field of targets.
Oh girls just wanna have fun

it does make me a little sad how this platform is great at posting art at high res without compression, but the audience here is really shy at sharing art versus at twitter or bsky. and i know it's a smaller audience here period but like, there aren't notes unless it's on specific interests and fandoms or if you're doing a funny meme. idk fill your blog with things you think are pretty and attractive and cool, or try to contribute to an environment where these things are being posted and shared around. so many good artists don't post here anymore because they just can't bother even though it's straightforward and easy to post - it's that cold a reception they get
and of course, this is triggered by me posting an illustration myself, but it's not at all a call for pity engagement. idc i'm not fishing for that. it's a deeply personal piece for me and me only and me sharing it is basically for my friends, anyone else is merely a courtesy i am extending. but it is triggered by the posting because i get to first hand experience the disparity between posting here and posting elsewhere. how huge that difference is makes it hard to ignore
