Summer sees both a drop off in donations and, at least for our trauma center, a spike in traumas. Trauma centers across the US are in danger of running out of blood for our trauma patients TODAY, which is very scary but, unlike much of the other scary national news coming across our screens these days, is something you can help fix immediately and directly.

even if you think you don't qualify or have been rejected in the past, call up your local blood services because the national rules have changed! They used to give one-year deferrals for tattoos depending on state, it's now as soon as it's healed. Anal sex used to be a lifetime deferral, I believe it's now only three months from a new partner. They used to turn away people who had lived in specific parts of Europe during the "mad cow disease" thing in the 90s, they don't care about that anymore either.

Testing has gotten sufficiently good that a lot of issues they used to worry about in the blood supply are no longer issues.

(At the moment, it’s something like 75 minutes of intense activity every week.) 

But as it turns out, people either don’t realize how much they actually move, or they deliberately lie about it, because if you give people a wearable device that measures physical activity with some precision, you can see a discrepancy between what the device says and what the person says. For instance: you write down you cycled ‘at high intensity’ for 60 minutes, but in reality you sort of pushed the pedals for 45 minutes. 

(Maybe you perceived it as high intensity, maybe you didn’t understand how ‘high intensity’ is defined, maybe you misremember, or maybe you’re trying to be ‘a good student’ and pretend like you’re exercising more than you actually are. It doesn’t really matter, it’s all normal human behaviour.)

One of my service learning classes involved work at a local homeless community center, helping people write resumes and cleaning bathrooms.

Our instructor told us to expect to see the bathrooms trashed a lot–like you will clean the bathroom and immediately someone will wreck it.

And it’s not because they disrespect your work or don’t value having access to clean bathrooms or whatever, but because of control.

When you feel like you have no control over your life or your environment, your brain is going to want to assert control however it can.

Which results in trashed bathrooms.  It’s control exercised over the one small part of your environment that you still have the power to affect.

I see kids on tumblr using the language of social justice as cudgels on people who actually do care about and listen to them

or holding the creators within their communities to an impossibly high standard that they never apply to mainstream media properties.

I just see trashed bathrooms. ‘These are the people my voice will reach,’ they rationalize, ‘so these are the people I’ll hurt.’

you know what Gets me about that, is like. joe is both... protecting and not protecting nicky there.

bc if you look at what joe is specifically doing, he’s not actually killing the mercs between him and nicky. he’s disarming them, disabling them, and then shoving them behind him for nicky to kill off.

you can see him knee that merc, rip his gun out of his hand, then shove him away to deal with the next guy. (who he also disables then shoves past)

and Thats the hallmark of joe & nicky’s fighting style, bc (excluding the hallway scene at the end of the movie where joe & nicky both have pistols, the sniper scene pre-kill-floor, & the stabby stabby scene pre-kill-floor) thats just how joe + nicky fight. one disables, one kills. in the merrick fight scene joe is doing the killing & nicky is doing the disabling

(and oh my god the way he does it. look at him put his BACK to the second merc after only shooting the guy in the leg. he almost got up and shot nicky if it werent for joe scrambling to kill him right after. like christ the faith nicky must have in joe)

but anyways in the kill floor fight joe is doing the disabling, + nicky is doing the killing. (more or less -- i dont remember the exact count, which of course i did count at one point, but its like 3-2 or smth like that, one of them kills three and the other kills two. or something close) but joe is actively relying on nicky’s participation in that fight either way. he’s not fighting for nicky, he’s fighting with nicky

But Also: he’s standing Right In Front Of Nicky. they could have stood back-to-back. they could have stood side-by-side. but no, joe had to go right in front of nicky

(which honestly might actually be hindering nicky a little. his sword requires ample space to swing around, and joe is literally a foot away from nicky. you can even see when nicky pulls his sword he has to angle it so he doesnt smack joe in the back)

so joe isnt doing the fighting for nicky, he’s actively relying on nicky’s participation-- he knows very well nicky can fight. their skill level is equivalent, they have exactly the same amount of combat experience. but Even So, he still stands right between nicky and the mercs.

& lets be honest. its not like nicky’s in any considerable amount of danger here. they just all got a Very Inconvenient confirmation that their immortality is still kicking, so no chance of perma-death, and the way they rip through those mercs implies they weren’t much of a challenge w/o the advantage of surprise. most of the mercs have empty guns. the absolute WORST thing that can really happen to nicky here is that he might get clipped by a couple bullets by a lucky merc, which would take seconds to heal.

and like. thats all joe is realistically protecting nicky from. a few seconds of temporary pain.

joe:

1. forces his still-healing, shaking self off the ground

2. abandons booker on the other side of the room

3. nearly tramples andy

4. sprints halfway across the room

5. spends the whole fight hand-to-hand fighting anyone who gets close to nicky

all to *potentially* save nicky from a couple seconds of pain

& that makes me think abt this one bit from a meta post-- i dont remember the context bc it was months ago i read it and it was a long post, but it said smth like ‘joe feels nicky’s pain more acutely than his own’ which i think is really on point.

it reminds me of one of the million Little Things the movie does with joe&nicky-- specifically during the keane fight scene: when keane kills nicky, nicky takes the whole thing silently. keane throwing him to the ground, kneeling on him, grabbing his hair, jamming the gun in his mouth-- silent. but right after the gun goes off, joe screams out like he’s in pain.
