Also, please do not listen to how people talk about cover letters on this site. Cover letters are important, and in many industries you can be damn sure they'll be read. And no, they're not 'fanfic about working in your office', or just re-stating the resume contents in a fancier guise. If you treat them like that, then of course they're not doing much for you. That makes you sound like a syncophantic windbag, and it's not doing anything else to help.
I was trained in the dark arts of the cover letter by my mother, who is a hiring manager. And her training has paid off: I've been consistently told my cover letters are excellent. Let me pass on the wisdom.
The job of a cover letter is to give a prospective employer strictly more information than is on the resume. This is where you take the resume contents and put them into context. You look at the job requirements (you are looking at the job requirements before applying, right?) and look at your resume and ask the question (in your head) "why would a person think this candidate would be good for this job?" and your cover letter is the answer to that question. If you don't answer that question, the hiring manager is going to have to do it themselves, and you have way more information to work with than they do.
This is especially important if you're moving from one industry to another, because then the relevant connections aren't obvious. It's also very important if you're overqualified, because then you can use the letter to say "I know it looks like this job would be too entry-level for me, but I'm interested to pursue it for reasons x, y, and z". You can also use this space to explain away something that might otherwise be disqualifying, like job-hopping or a long break in employment. The tone to strike here is always matter-of-fact and constrained to topic - don't go into detail about health stuff or personal tragedy, just tell them what they need to hear: that this period of your resume was affected by [bad thing] but that it's now in the past and you're looking forward to the next chapter. Remember, one of the things they're trying to learn is whether you'd be content in this role, or whether you'd be miserable and leave after 2 months, which would force them to do all the work of hiring again. You're trying to establish that you will fit right in and not cause problems. Knowing what drew you to this job in particular (and don't just say 'money', that's true for everyone) helps with that.
And the other mistake? Everyone writes cover letters that are too long. One page is fine. Two is the absolute maximum, and that's if you have a lot of specific things to say. It's a waste of your time and theirs to pad it out with fluff. Of my two most recent successful cover letters (i.e. jobs for which I was interviewed) one was 390 words and the other was 550. That's the length of this post. How long did it take me to write this post? About 15 minutes to write, 5 to proof and edit. That's how long you should be spending on a cover letter, maximum.
this one kinda hurts when i see it every pride month. im glad to see an art piece of mine still circulating, and with nearly 100,000 notes too! it just hurts that im separated from it. everyone in the notes thinks im gone. im still here, but my potential community and connection is lost because im forgotten in place of the art. yeah, my deactivated profile does add to the profoundness of what i was saying, but i am still removed.

Like sure she is sneaky is selectively mute & is a balerina but she is reduced to always go "New Brother" in the dpxdc universe & it feels like that's it?
Where did that come from why is she the favourite child?
WIP excerpt, Billy and Damian and the whole soulmate thing.
âI really donât know how I feel about this,â Robin says.Â
âDo you feel like letting me hold your super-cool sword?â Billy suggests hopefully.Â
âFather frowns on that sort of thing,â Robin says. âHe says swords are dangerous for children.âÂ
âMy best friend is a tiger, I could introduce you?â Billy bargains, figuring thatâs similar levels of âdangerous for childrenâ. Well, as much as Tawky is ever âdangerousâ, anyway.Â
Robin . . . blinks, slowly, and then looks at Batman.Â
âFather, I would like to begin planning our nuptials as soon as possible,â he announces matter-of-factly. Billy turns red. âYou may inform Nightwing that his services will be required as best man. Red Robin is not invited.âÂ
âYou literally don't even know his name yet, Robin,â Batman says very, very dryly.Â
âOh, itâs Billy,â Billy says, attempting to stop blushing. Blushing seems embarrassing, in front of Robin. Heâs cool. And he likes tigers!Â
âProblem solved, thank you for your prompt efficiency, William,â Robin says briskly, clapping his hands together. âWould your tiger friend prefer having a raw option on the menu, do you think?âÂ
â. . . Billy, but okay,â Billy says. âYes he would, thank you for asking.âÂ
âExcellent,â Robin says, visibly satisfied.Â
âActually, is it okay if he's my best man?â Billy asks thoughtfully, since he doesnât know who else heâd want to pick anyway. Tawky is his best friend, after all. âI know that might be a littleââÂ
âThat would be acceptable, yes,â Robin cuts him off with very quickly, looking just shy of vibrating for some reason. Billy beams at him.Â
âYouâre really nice!â he says. Thatâs cool. Heâd hate to have a soulmate who didnât get along with Tawky. Thatâd suck.Â
â . . . are you sure?â Robin asks skeptically.Â
âYeah! Tawky will love you,â Billy says confidently, because obviously he will. Robinâs really nice and likes tigers and has a super-cool sword; whatâs not to like? âHe's a respectable gentleman, so he appreciates nice people.âÂ
â . . . I suppose Red Robin may attend our nuptials,â Robin allows grudgingly. âIf he absolutely must.âÂ
Someone will say "as a queer person in the heart of empire, my life is in danger every day" and you'll find out they're a developer for Amazon and live in San Francisco or Seattle or some shit, and then you'll meet a trans girl from Alva, OK who's like "Yeah, things are pretty good. AutoZone moved me to full-time."
#That's what I mean when I say the foundation of feminism and queer community should not fixate on victimhood #Once you feel that our suffering is our shared experience an not our love then our suffering becomes vital to the culture #I don't want a culture where suffering is vital #I want a culture where love is celebrated #The suffering is an imposition not a prerequisite #And yeah I sure fucking hope our oppression is diluted bitch you WANT us freebasing the uncut shit???
Maybe YOUR dark romance is mid but MINE, mine is amazing.
My 30 year old widowed single mother getting cozy with a obsessed mafia man to get him to cover up the murder of her husband is better. This man is ready to be the girl dad to her daughter deserves and he loves this wicked woman who matches his freak. He doesn't care if she doesn't love him genuinely as long as she stays with him. What's wrong with using a man that wants to be used? Nothing!

Au where when tim is in his depression era and trying to clone Kon, guess who just so happens to have had his human half destroyed and his core is flying around without a solid body or form to try to find the resources to rebuild Danny, when it/he happens across an already constructed body, that doesn't have anyone using it, and isn't dead! Yeah it's biology is a bit different from their old body, and it's just a little unstable from not having a second DNA, but core can take care of that, and this one should be even stronger than the last living body! So it can't be cut up again!
Danny was flying aimlessly. He'd died. He'd won. He'd beaten Pariah. Monster vs Monster, and he'd won. His core was cracked, his halfa flesh was literally melting off his soul.
He was properly born, a true realms being. But he was a halfa at the core and that made things weird.
He had options...
Retreat into his core and allow someone he trusts to incubate him.
Steal a new body from someone else.
Slowly fade from existence.
Now he was traveling along the computer systems of the world, staving off his fading in the hopes of staying alive until Dani returned. To say goodbye properly.
.
.
.
.
What? What is this? A body. A soulless body. A...clone.
Batman, eye twitching: Please tell me that what I'm looking at isn't as indecent as it appears.
Green Lanturn, Flash, and Green Arrow: *trying(and failing) not to laugh*
Wonder Woman: *unamused*
Aquaman: *raises eyebrow, amused*
Superman and Phantom: *Superman is sitting on the couch, Phantom in his lap, arms wrapped around Superman's shoulders, Phantom is purring loudly and nuzzling against Superman's throat, neck, and cheeks, his eyes are hazy, while Superman holds him down so he doesn't fall*
Superman, blushing heavily: Someone sprayed me with this weird "ghost repellant" spray when I was a civilian and as soon as Phantom caught a wiff of it, well...
Flash, snickering: Ghost repellant? More like ghost-nip.
Phantom: *completely dazed and out of it, but content as he breathes in the weird spray clinging to Superman's body*
Not a secret family. You're just oblivious. Part 10
Part 1 <previous next>
Tim wasnât sure if he was worried or annoyed. He knew he would need to debrief on any important updates that happened while he was on vacation, but for the call for a meeting to come in as soon as he was marked as available down to the minute. Either something major happened, so major it was being kept from his emergency alerts, or Bruce wanted to lecture him about âbeing lazyâ and âabandoning his post". Either way it wasnât going to be fun.
As he pulled in he could see that everyone was in the cave, even Babs, and was that Black Canary? Okay, so it was either a league level threat or some new strain of fear toxin that required a therapist. He was not looking forward to whatever this was.
Black Canary opened her mouth, presumably to explain her presence before being cut off by Dick, bordering on tears. âHow could you have kept this all from us Tim?â and Tim felt his eyebrows raise. What is happening?
âKeep what?â Tim had several secrets that they could have found out but none that should elicit such a strong reaction.
âYour family!â and oh. That makes sense they had found out that Danny and the twins were metas, or at least what they would understand to be metas. One of the twins must have slipped up in public. Thatâs fine this is a conversation he was actually prepared for.
âLook, itâs nothing personal. I know you guys like to know whatâs going on, but itâs not like theyâre a threat or trying to be a part of all of this. Danny and I both agreed we want the twins away from all of this.â Tim gestured around the cave.
âYou canât just decide that.â Bruce was wearing his I know best and you will listen to me glare. That made Tim angry. How dare he think he gets a say in how Tim raised his kids. How dare he think that just because the twins are metas or are associated with Tim that they had to be heroes. Absolutely not.
âIâm sorry, what did you just say to me? Because I think you just said that I am not allowed final say on decisions about my children and their safety.â He glared around the room.
-
âHow could you have kept all of this from us Tim?â Dick knew he was supposed to let Dinah lead the discussion but he couldnât help himself. He needed to know. The why was all he cared about. Why had his little brother hid this?
âKeep what?â Tim reasoned looking concerned and confused.
âYour family!â Dick regretted the way he yelled it almost as soon as it left his mouth. This was escalating and it was his fault. Timâs face seemed to drop into a sad resignation.
âLook, itâs nothing personal. I know you guys like to know whatâs going on, but itâs not like theyâre a threat or trying to be a part of all of this. Danny and I both agreed we want the twins away from all of this.â Tim explained as he gestured to the family. And oh. Weâre they tat bad that Tim had decided they werenât fit to be around his children.
âYou canât just decide that.â Bruce interjected with his something is wrong please talk to me glare. He was hurt. Dick agreed Tim couldnât just decide to separate from their family without so much as a conversation or even a note.
âIâm sorry, what did you just say to me? Because I think you just said that I am not allowed final say on decisions about my children and their safety.â Timâs voice was dark as he glared around the room. And their safety? Did Tim see them as a threat. Was it because of Jason and Damian. Was it because of how he reacted when Bruce was in the time stream?
âThat is enough!â Dinah interrupted physically moving to be between Tim and the rest of the family. She sighed as the room quieted. âI can understand why Cass said you would need a mediator for this.â She glared at Bruce and Dick. âWe are going to have a mature conversation without all of the yelling and accusations. This is a conversation, not an ambush.â
-
Danny was in the middle of his least favorite chore, washing the dishes, when he felt his phone buzz in his pocket. He glanced at it to see a text from Tim.
Polaris: Get the go bags ready for you and the kids. The bats found out youâre metas and are being weird about it. I donât trust it.
Starlight: I can take them through the realms to Jazz or leave them with Frostbite if you think youâll need extraction.
Polaris: If you donât hear from me in two hours, reach out. Maybe covertly come to the cave and check on me after you drop off the twins if you still donât hear from me.
Well, there went any chance of a relaxing, peaceful night. Danny focused on keeping his emotions quiet. The last thing they needed was for his distress to wake up the twins.
-
After everyone had a chance to calm down a bit, they sat down, and Dinah started. âAlright, letâs start off with establishing why we are having this conversation. Cass called me in because she didnât think there would be productive conversations without an outside perspective, and clearly, she was right. Essentially, this is a family group therapy session.â
âThen why am I here? And why bring my family into this?â Was Timâs immediate response.
âWhat do you mean replacement?â Jason asked.
âI mean, I get that Iâm part of the âBats and Birds, " but Iâm not like actually a family member.â Tim looked genuinely confused. Them the room erupted.
Becoming a halfa rendered Danny sterile. When he first found out about this, Danny didn't really care much. I mean, he was a teenager/young adult, so he wasn't exactly thinking about kids. But now, as he's older, he's a bit sad. He knows he has other options, adopting kids, or marrying someone with with kids, he could still be a dad, but a small part of him can't help but still feel sad, can't help but still want a biological kid.
And then he was presented with an opportunity. After crashing a new pop up cloning lab with the rest of the Justice League, Phantom stumbles upon the only stable pod. Inside, is a little baby with sparkling white hair, and a small, stable, baby ghost core. The moment Phantom holds them, hes smitten, chirping and cooing over the delicate little bundle in his arms, all but melted when they reached out to grasp his fingers.
The only problem was, this clone had the DNA of another hero, another hero also had claim to this baby, but Phantom wasn't sure he'd be willing to give the baby up.
Basically: Sterile Phantom wants kids but knows it can't really happen. He works with the Justice League and one day finds a clone made using his and [hero of your choosing]'s DNA, and Phantom fears how the other "parent" will react.
Person Specific Options!
You can choose whoever yoy want but I had some bonus ideas!
Wonder Woman: The baby is a girl and Wonder Woman thinks she should be raised on Themyscira, but Phantom is obviously very against that because he wants to raise her and now there is a full on custody battle happening in the Justice League and heros are picking sides.
Superman: Phantom has heard how Superman treated his other clone and is now being hyper protective over the baby, even though Superman gave Phantom full custody as long as Ma and Pa got visitation to their "grandchild".
Batman: Batman has never gotten to raise any of his kids as babies, so he's excited about this one, and he doesn't want to rip the baby away from Phantom because he knows how important to him this is(hes read Phantom's medical file), so after much back and forth with himself, Batman invited Phantom to raise the baby together in Batman's home. Batman and Phantom would coparent as civilians and smother this baby with so much love.
Green Lanturn(Hal): Hal freaked out at the prospect of having a kid and splits/avoids Phantom for the baby's first few years. Phantom is not impressed when he finally talks to Phantom again and the first thing he does is make a "I came back with milk!" Joke as he hands Phantom a milk box. Phantom smacks him and then introduces him to his kid.
Aquaman(if Ghost King Danny): Aquaman wants to take the baby to Atlantis because the baby is Aquadic Royalty, but Phantom being a King also makes the baby Ghost Royalty(even if the Ghost Monarchy isn't passed through blood), so now we have a Royal Custody Battle.
Martian Manhunter: Martian Manhunter is interested in the growth of the child, but he is okay letting Phantom act as the "main" parent as long as he does get to be in their life to some extent. Phantom is more than happy to welcome Martian Manhunter into his and the baby's life as much as he wants.
Black Canary: Doesn't know how to feel about the baby, and is happy to leave them with Phantom until she figures herself out. Phantom let's her have her space and never forces baby on her, but he's also making it clear Black Canary is welcome around any time.
Captain Marvel: As a child himself, hes freaked out. Phantom finds out hes still a child and boom, Phantom now has two children. Also Marvel's immediately put in therapy.(note, the Clone has Captain Marvel's DNA not Billy's, so any DNA test will Read Danny/Phantom x Marvel NOT Danny/Phantom x Billy)
Supergirl: Supergirl is so excited to have a baby and is looking forward to sharing her culture with her kid, but shes also sees how excited and smitten Phantom is, so she's happy with having split custody with Phantom.
Constantine: Constantine immediately tries to split until Clockwork tells him "I think TF not" and now Constantine has shared custody of a ghost baby with a ghost. A ghost who also worries over Constantine's health. Yay.
What if the other parent is someone who's dead â or dead at the time cause, y'know, comics?
Danny would obviously get primary custody in that case; being the only living genetic donor; but he'd probably also share with/get roped into the family of the other hero so they have plenty of visitation time with this little echo of their loved one.
Then, if it's during one of those 'not really dead' plotlines; you could have a bit of drama when the other hero comes back some months/years later.

â-so, really, itâd make more sense if you tried selling me on a computer overlord or something, rather than some benevolent being of protection that loves all lives yet canât be bothered to, at the very least, protect the world from Justice League level threats, yâknow?â The man, whoâd introduced himself as Alvin, seemingly concluded his speech with that⌠before tacking on, âat least if itâs a machine, then I can understand it not being able to do much.â
Danny stared at the man.
Alvin stared back at him, almost expectantly, as though waiting for Danny to⌠what, argue with him? Debate, maybe? Sucks for this dude, but Danny failed his debate and speech class in high school. Sure, it was more because of another ghost trying for world domination than because he didnât attempt to pass, but the point still stands.
Danny shrugged, âI mean, thatâs fair. Iâd probably worship a computer too, if life had worked out that way.â Unfortunately, no, it didnât work out that way because for some reason, he was stuck playing his own high priest.
Alvin looked almost outraged by Dannyâs nonchalant response - so heâd definitely wanted a debate or argument or fight or whatever it was that he wanted. Danny, quite frankly, didnât care. He needed to actually get people that were willing to believe in him or his core would self-destruct or whatever the term Clockwork used was.
âŚ
Tim couldnât believe that hadnât worked. Like?? It was a tried and true method to get cult leaders to give up their inner operations quickly to simply walk up to them and tell them that their âreligionâ sucked and there was no way anyone could really believe in it. Heâd thought the detail about worshipping a machine before some protection deity that likely didnât exist was a nice touch.
He didnât think heâd be talking to the most chill cult leader in existence. Told Tim, as Alvin, that he âpractices freedom of religion and all thatâ and âanyone is free to believe whatever they want to.â
So, new plan. Uh, step one: regroup and make a new plan. Because if Plan A(sshole) flopped that bad, then the backup plans definitely wouldnât work.
Itâs interesting how diseases rip through schools at incredible speeds despite being in an arguably modern, clean(ish) environment. I wonder if it has something to do with the whole âyou need a doctorâs note to excuse your absence of even one dayâ combined with the average price of going to a doctor, the lack of education on things like âyouâre still contagious even after the fever goes awayâ, and the overwhelming message of âif you donât struggle through it, youâre a failure!â
On my campus there tends to be a problem where even I you have the doctors note professors will still take points off of your final grade regardless of how sick you are. Iâve seen people show up to class with the stomach flu, pneumonia, respiratory infections and all sorts of other contagious ailments.
The school system I grew up in put an absolutely ungodly amount of pressure on kids to Show Up Every Day No Matter What. Many schools are like this, but looking back, my townâs was borderline fucking dystopian. They asked me why I didnât just âpostponeâ a surgery at one pointâ when I was fifteenâ to give you an idea of how monumentally obtuse these people were.
So, in elementary school, I started having chicken pox symptoms, right? They were mild because I was vaccinated (yay!) but my mom recognized them quickly and took me to the doctor, because my mom is a reasonable human being with standards. The doctor said âyup, youâve got those pox, it may seem mild but please for the love of god DO NOT take her to school, she is very contagious even though she may FEEL okay.â
So I had to stay home from school until I got clearance from my doctor to go back. I was an angry little gremlin the whole time, because I wanted to go to the school library and read books about the human skull, but my mother said, âno, you cannot leave this house, and do not scratch the bumps please.â So I sat at home and tried not to scratch the bumps, like a good little gremlin.
A few days into my Chicken Pox Related House Arrest, we got a letter from the school. I was far from the only person with chicken pox, as it so happened. Like⌠a tenth of my second grade class had Confirmed Pox. We all fell ill within DAYS of each other.
So how did this happen, you ask? Well, a kid had chicken pox, and he came to school anyway. âAh, well perhaps they didnât know,â you may very well say. âMaybe his parents didnât notice!â No. No, they noticed. In fact they KNEW it was CHICKEN POX. They sent him to school anyway.
The kidâs parentsâŚâŚ.. were, in fact, teachers at the school. And they KNOWINGLY made him go to school sick, because they didnât want to risk hurting his precious âperfect attendanceâ record. They figured that since he wasnât, like, Literally Dying, it was better for him not to miss school. Never mind the fact that they were actively endangering hundreds of little kids.
Fast forward to my freshman year of college. A kid came to class with mumps because he âcouldnât afford to missâ. Guess what happened? Mumps outbreak! Diseases are, as it turns out, good at being diseases! Vaccinations are phenomenal, but they can only do so much, and some people rely on herd immunity to not be killed by preventable illness.
This entire attitude needs to die. Itâs dangerous. Food service workers are forced to show up sick, little kids are forced to show up sick, college students show up sick because theyâre afraid of flunking out.
And on top of it all, misinformation campaigns are encouraging people not to get vaccinations! Itâs 2019 and weâre flirting with the plague! Next thing you know some blogger is gonna be like âactually we should all be fucking rats and eating our meat raw, death to all science and god bless americaâ
