god there really is just something about the cliff scene that sits in my bones; an authority figure forces you to relive life and death in its worst aspects, you lash out because you are a traumatised teenager; your friends, vulnerable and traumatised in turn, stare. they stare. at you. and this is even worse than the pain she forced down your throat because isn't this what you always feared the most?
suddenly they are no longer edwin, crystal, and niko. instead they are a young boy tormented by other boys (loud, vicious, violent) to the point of his cruel death and hellish punishment, a young girl abused and stalked by someone who will wear your face in her dreams, and another young girl who likely has experienced harassment at the hands of people just. like. you. young, stupid boys lashing out out of hurt.
you wear the shape of everyone's monsters, your own included. it eats at you like acid, like some parasite eager to expose what you are at your core: never good enough, forever a source of hurt.
jesper fahey is loud and energetic and overwhelming for the same reason wylan is quiet and reserved. because they were both taught to hide essential parts of who they were, they just go about it in different ways
Arthur's first instinct: making sure Merlin is safe. Nothing else matters.
Arthur & Merlin | 2.13 "The Last Dragonlord"
Interestingly, merlin does the exact same: look at him, he doesnāt look at arthur in search of support like someone else may in such situation, Merlin can fight and protect what he can see. By putting himself behind Arthur and looking at everyone in front of him he is metaphorically pulling out his sword and putting himself in front of Arthur
Anyway, I always find it neat how merthur can protect each other in a way that make the other not feel like they canāt do the same

kaz being unable to fathom fathers disliking their children is so funny to me. this man has literally ended peopleās lives, but his father was good, jesperās father is good, inejās father is good, and even pekka rollins is a good father, so surely wylan was being dramatic? kaz was so sure fathers had to love their kids that he bet on it (and lost! because jan van eck truly did despise wylan, and kaz was blown away)
and thats probably like the only bet he has ever lost
Something else I would have liked to see more of throughout the series is Merlin just using his powers on instinct before he can stop it like when he saved Gaius from that fall.
It wouldāve been cool to see Merlin struggling to contain all this power especially at the start of the series while heās still learning to harness his magic:
Like maybe Arthur throws something at Merlin while half paying attention but Merlinās magic stops it midflight and he has to quickly unfreeze and take the hit to avoid suspicion
Gwen asks Merlin to pass her the washing but itās moving before he can even get his hands on it and Merlin has to scramble after it to grab the basket midair
Merlinās carrying a meal up to the princes chambers and trips, his magic catching him and the tray of food and quickly righting them both, and Merlin glances around to see if anyone noticed
Gaius asks him to light a candle and suddenly every wick in the room is lit before he can even finish his sentence
Itās only after Gaius gives Merlin the spell book that he learns any kind of control, but even then, there would still be moments of panic or excitement that cause his magic to flare on instinct
the platonic relationships in six of crows are so important to me ššš
do you guys think five ever gets sad that heās not closer in age to his siblings
because obviously five hates being young again, it makes him look weaker and is a constant reminder of the biggest fuck up of his life. but what if he looks at his reflection in the mirror sometimes and just wonders if there was ever any room for him to just be a stupid thirteen year old that didnāt have world-ending consequences
time botched body aside, do you think five ever misses when he was allowed to be a twenty-something naive kid. do you think every time his siblings says something stupid he wonders about how long ago he wouldāve died if he had had the privilege (and, simultaneously, the curse) to be that naive.
do you think five ever wishes he was actually a kid again. so he could redo everything he fucked up the first time. do you think five ever wishes he could hide behind his kid body, like heās not a cynical old man with too much blood on his hands to ever feel clean again
or maybe misses nothing at all, considering he only got to be naive once in his life, and that naivety is exactly what put him in this mess in the first place
You either die a hero (get unfairly cancelled after 1-2 seasons) or live long enough to become the villain (the last season/final is a shit show)

thereās something so important to me about inej letting jesper be physically affectionate towards her in soc/ck/s&b
āLady Jane the man you think is going to abandon your daughter as soon as she puts out is now headcanoning them as married
I absolutely adore the way Jesper dresses. I love to think of the year or so where it was Him, Inej, and Kaz together on jobs. Kaz is in merchers black, a child mocking a merchant for their schemes. Inej is in dark, practical clothing that can blend into shadows and conceal weapons.
ā¦And Jesper is wearing a bedazzled belt over purple pants, a green shirt, and a multicolored waistcoat. His hat is striped with pins among the brim. His shoes have a small heel which isnāt even a style in Ketterdam yet, but he adopted it from his riding gear. He has a pocket watch that doesnāt tell the time but it looks cool. If the mission doesnāt require stealth, he jingles everywhere he walks.
Legend.
Other YA characters taking down their enemies: massive scale magical fight scenes, complex good vs evil moral conversations, love triangles, tragedy
vs crooked kingdom

my favourite thing about kaz is that he isn't a humourless miserable serious person. he's a drama queen, constantly sarcastic and genuienly laughs. he's cruel and terrifying, but he's also just a sassy teenager
thinking about this moment again:
particularly in regards to this conversation:
thinking about inej, who is actively dying, asking kaz for an apology. inej, whose native tongue leaves no room for triviality here. this isnāt āyou were mean to me and you need to make nice,ā itās so much deeper.
this is āpromise me you wonāt treat me like a piece in your chess game again. promise me you wonāt keep acting like iām replaceable. promise me iām not just another one of your investments.ā
this is the first time we see inej holding kaz accountable, the first time we see her ask him to be more, to do better. this is the precursor to the āwithout armorā conversation. and i think itās fitting that we never hear whether or not kaz did apologize. because at this point, i donāt think heās ready to give inej what sheās really asking for here, and in a way, itās best that she doesnāt hear him say the words. heās not ready to mean them yet.
