possibly my favorite thing about the irondad and spiderson relationship is that tony has an obvious fear of becoming his own father, of being to peter what howard was to him, and even outright says that to peter ("my father was never there for me so i'm just trying to break the cycle") but he seriously doesn't realize that he's already become exactly that.
howard was cold, mean, and distant but tony finds out later in life, decades after howard's death, that howard was actually very proud of him even before he actually did anything; he viewed tony as his "greatest creation" and believed he'd "change the world" with howard's life's work that he was making FOR TONY and leaving behind FOR TONY. but again, he didn't know this until way after howard was gone because the man never bothered to tell him to his face.
in homecoming, tony has already developed a one-sided relationship with peter in a sense- he listens to peter's voicemails, cares about peter's input, and remembers little details about him, to the point where HE already believes they have a father/son bond and compares his relationship with peter to his own relationship with his father TWO separate times... but he does all of it from afar and doesn't actually show peter (except for when he drops little bombs only after the fact- "like that lady that bought you the churro" "i did listen, kid") and this causes a lot of major miscommunication between them and leads peter to believe that tony doesn't really care about him at all.
and this is why it'll always be sad to me that we only got hints about how their relationship changed in between homecoming and infinity war. so much potential, so much we could've and should've seen. but from what we can infer, while they definitely did have a better relationship than howard and tony (the end of hoco definitely slapped some sense into tony, they both trusted each other a lot more by iw and were visibly more familiar), their communication was still limited. like, the hug tony gives him in endgame seems like it was the first time they'd ever actually hugged based on peter's reaction ? so they loved each other very much, we know that for a fact, but they didn't show it to each other much.
so when tony dies and literally leaves his legacy to peter with a little note about how he trusts him and wants him to be the next tony stark... it's basically the exact experience that he had with howard. and he doesn't even fucking know it.
will always be infinitely funny to me that right after the plot of avengers, tony forced fury to rebuild everything to use repulsor tech on the engines. he got caught in a turbine one (1) time and was like “this shit is FUCKED!!! you LIVE like this?”

tony wears chunky shoes to make him seem taller when he’s in public and around the rest of the Avengers (inspired by the fact that RDJ wears these thickass shoes in the movies). but, when he’s working with peter in the lab, he just wears normal sneakers because Peter’s shorter than him so he doesn’t care, and all his insecurities feel a little less heavy when he’s just killing time with his teenager
