There really really ought to be a book about how the staple crops of different civilizations shape and influence those civilizations, and I really want to read it.
Salt: A World History by Mark Kurlansky and A History of the World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standage (three are alcohol, three have caffeine) are not quite that, but may still be of interest?
I read Salt back in the day and it's so so good, second the rec. I have heard of 6 Glasses and not read it but I am sure I would probably love it. Gotta see if the library has it. Thank you!
Gonna throw Empire of Cotton by Sven Beckert in the ring here! You'll never see the modern world the same way again.
A Short History Of The World According To Sheep by Sally Coulthard blew my mind. So many things are tied to wool and sheep and weaving and so many words and phrases are tied to wool, people have no idea.
Example words which come from textiles/weaving, if not specifically wool (go look them up!): subtle, shoddy, tabby, Brazil, rocket, twit, warped, going batty, on tenterhooks, text...
I'll throw in a rec for Pickled, Potted, and Canned by Sue Shephard - a very interesting look at food preservation and how the availability of different types of food preservation shaped cultures and cuisines.
Sweetness and Power is this but for the topic of sugar
The Lost Supper: Searching for the Future of Food in the Flavors of the Past might also be up your alley. It's about "forgotten" foods and staples. They talk about different types of wheat, sauces, veggies, etc and a little about the cultures from whence they come
Also: Much Depends on Dinner by Margaret Visser. One of my favourite books.
DO I HAVE A SERIES FOR YOU. University of California Press has a gift for you and it is a 80+ book series on food studies. There are even some that are open access (legally free), but the rest are in libraries.
I also highly recommend Frostbite by Nicola Twilley. It’s about the impact refrigeration has had/is having on food preservation and culture, globally. It was one of my favorite books of this last year.
Also, The Rice Theory of Culture https://scholarworks.gvsu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1172&context=orpc By Thomas Talhelm
Can't believe no one's mentioned Consider the Fork yet, which is about how environment/resources shape our ways of eating, which shapes both our culture and our concepts of politeness. So interesting, really recommend!
Seven Flowers and How They Shaped Our World by Jennifer Potter
It isn't so much about edible plants as it is about decorative ones, but I think it fits the theme of this growing list enough for me to add it.

there should be an “I refuse to lose weight” option when you hide an ad

I need to know the thought procces that led to this
What do you mean? Did I not make it clear enough in the drawings? Do you need a photo of all 23 waistcoats currently in my closet?
It's 26 if you count the 3 leaf bolero vests. This isn't even close to all the ones I've ever made, I've donated plenty of older ones to the theatre.
#sewing dinosaur please share your wisdom #i want nothing more than to make a waistcoat #but i tried once and it was super difficult #do you know any patterns or tutorials for beginners?
I have made videos on sewing several of the things in this picture! Here's a link to my youtube channel.
Though I'm not sure if I'd call them beginner friendly. I go over every technique VERY thoroughly, but I mostly do 18th century or 18th century inspired stuff, which includes a lot of hand sewing and completely different tailoring techniques from what you'll find in modern waistcoats.
The first of the 3 leaf boleros I make in this one is pretty simple though, so that ought to be fairly beginner friendly. (The light green one)
You could make a super basic waistcoat with the same sewing and turning method and just add some buttons & holes. (I have tutorials for covered buttons and buttonholes too if you want to do those by hand.)
OH also! That brown monster print waistcoat in the closet picture is a print I designed that's available on Spoonflower.
That one's got more machine sewing than the brocade one in the first video, but I haven't made a video about that method yet. My most recent leaf one is machine sewn and turned, but hasn't got any pockets.
Edit: Forgot to mention my sewing blog is @vincentbriggs
I love the dinosaur edge detail on the white one!
That one's light grey!
And I can understand the confusion since I posted it on this blog, but they're monsters or perhaps creatures.

hello fjorester nation
every time you;re not looking they add another skarsgard brother
TWO FREE PATTERNS!
For those who don't know, I'm doing my PhD dissertation on 19th-century plus-size fashion, and as part of it I've been patterning larger antique garments.
Last year, I was able to go to Genesee Country Village & Museum in upstate NY and pattern an early 1800s corset as well as an 1830s dress. Full instructions, photo albums, & print-optimized versions up on Etsy if you need more guidance or would like to support my work, but my agreement with the museum was that I would put simple gridded patterns up for free alongside the paid versions. And those are now up!
1830s dress (L/XL) Bust: ~43” (109cm) with the center-front gap Waist: 32.5” (82.5cm)
Last year, curator Brandon Brooks at Genesee Country Village & Museum was kind enough to let me come and pattern a c. 1831 morning dress in
1810s corset (M/L) Bust: 39” (99cm) Waist: 31.5” (80cm)
Last year, curator Brandon Brooks at Genesee Country Village & Museum was kind enough to let me come and pattern an early 19th century corse
Tag me if you use them, I'd love to see!
It all starts with gentle kisses
