Corrimony Chambered Cairn, Inverness-shire, Scotland
A burial monument, the passage of which is aligned to the moon at its southern minor standstill which occurs every 18 years. It is surrounded by a ring of 11 standing stones, and though the central chamber is now exposed to the elements, the capstone that would have enclosed it remains seated on the stones. It is covered in a plethora of cup marks carved in by our distant ancestors some 4000 years ago (See photo 5). It is believed to have been the final resting place of a high status woman. The purpose of cup marks is still under discussion….perhaps they are eyes that watchfully guard the resting places of the dead?
