Writing advice from my uni teachers:

If your dialog feels flat, rewrite the scene pretending the characters cannot at any cost say exactly what they mean. No one says “I’m mad” but they can say it in 100 other ways.

Wrote a chapter but you dislike it? Rewrite it again from memory. That way you’re only remembering the main parts and can fill in extra details. My teacher who was a playwright literally writes every single script twice because of this.

Don’t overuse metaphors, or they lose their potency. Limit yourself.

Before you write your novel, write a page of anything from your characters POV so you can get their voice right. Do this for every main character introduced.

This is legit good writing advice, especially the first bullet point! In playwriting class we did a bit where every bit of dialogue had to be an accusatory question and it was glorious.

Unpopular opinion: Films | LOTR

Frodo actually failed. He gave in to the ring. The ring's destruction was accidental, or perhaps because of Smeagol's greed.

Errr. It is accidental.

This is actually a very widely held opinion. Practically everyone who has read or seen LOTR agrees that Frodo failed. But is incorrect.

For one, Gollum would not have been there to commit that betrayal if not for Frodo’s mercy. So this very intentional act ultimately led to the Ring’s destruction.

For another (and more importantly), Tolkien says that Frodo’s task is not to destroy the Ring but to bear it as far as he can. He writes that the breaking of Frodo’s mind is no more of a failure than being strangled or crushed to death would be.

Besides, it would be impossible for anyone to voluntarily destroy the Ring. Nobody could do it.

There's a lot of messed up stuff in this book about how Facebook is run but this bit actually made me laugh out loud.

About Mark Zuckerberg during an awkward moment on stage "... he just quietly backs down the stairs on the side of the stage while still facing the crowd. It reminds me of the GIF of Homer Simpson backing away through a hedge."

This guy knows what he’s talking about. He’s one of the lead writers for Leverage and if you ever watch the series on DVD, do yourself a favor and listen to him talk about how the scripts got written. Some of the advice he has is stuff I use all the time: 1. Don’t introduce an important plot person or thing after the first half of the story. 2. Always tie up loose ends. 3. Introduce important things in the middle of unimportant things. 4. If you have to infodump, find an emotion to tie it to and it will seem less like infodump and more like a motive rant. Seriously this guy knows how to write.

my professor’s take is that mary shelley is feminizing victor throughout the novel, as a way of flipping gender roles and putting a male character through female experiences.

evidence as explained:

victor is creating life. he is putting his health at risk (spends two years with little sleep or socialization) to bring life forth into this world

his illness after he is shocked by the creature coming to life is akin to both ‘hysteria’ and postpartum depression

he pretty much swoons, let’s be honest

henry clerval, a man who has been characterized as manly and heroic, has to chase after damsel-in-distress victor and care for him as he convalesces

afterward, he hides what he did and went through, for fear that others will label him crazy and emotional and not believe him. sound familiar?

Victor in general is more emotional than the other characters and is constantly tempering his reactions to not be seen as irrational

the book does not otherwise have central female characters

Also, Shelley’s mother died in childbirth. It’s interesting, then, that Shelley presents the creation of life as something horrific and damaging. She parallels Victor with her mother.

in conclusion, Frankenstein (1818) by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley is one of the first examples of mpreg in English literature

What they don’t tell you about storytelling is that it becomes an instinct over time. You learn how to kind of … intuitively chain events together over time. That doesn’t mean it’s a cakewalk, or that you never get stuck on plotbeats, but you have a better time walking yourself out of corners that you as a less experienced writer would have been tempted to abandon your story over. Because you’ve been stuck in similar corners before; you know how you get out now.

I know its frustrating to keep hitting dead ends, but you got this. You’ll learn a little from every roadblock you hit.

One of the best stories I ever read as a child was a fantasy novel by some local dude selling books out of a suitcase on the sidewalk downtown, and I don't remember what it was called or who the author was, and it's so obscure that no matter how many elements I remember, I've never been able to find it through web searches. I only vaguely remember the story - it was a love story, something about a tower on an island and two characters on a quest to discover their forgotten past. They fall in love and at the end the only way to stay together is to allow themselves to forget again, and you realize that they're right where they started, in the exact same tower, and they're doomed to go on this same quest over and over again, never completed, but that also means they'll fall in love over and over again forever. And I remember how that ending blew up my little child brain into a million pieces.

I don't know what happened to the book, and I'll probably never read it again, but if you're somewhere out there and you were once selling fantasy novels from a suitcase on the sidewalk in the suburbs of Chicago, and if you ever felt like your writing never meant anything or went anywhere except a hundred copies you had printed yourself and sold for almost nothing, please know that your story buried itself in my young brain and has probably shaped my worldview in ways even I don't understand.

There are a lot of sweet, well-meaning folks in the notes advising me on how to search for this book, and I want you to know that I will never find this book. And that's okay.

This author self-published, which at that time meant he paid out of his own pocket to print 100 copies and sold some but not all them for cash on the sidewalk in one small town. E-books weren't a thing. There is no digital record to find. Even if I remembered any of the names or details, it wouldn't be searchable. No librarian has it in a catalogue.

The vast majority of books written before the modern day are lost media. Countless artists poured their hearts into stories that were read by few and lasted only as long as the paper they were printed on. Most of the art ever made has been destroyed or thrown away. Most of the music ever written will never be heard again. The expectation of permanence in art is very new, and even now, there are millions of works of art that will never be recorded or posted or shared. Millions more that will never even be completed.

Creation, with few exceptions, is a mandala. A vulnerable song performed for dear friends by a campfire, but the singer soon forgets how it went. A poem shared in a coffee house that rattles the audiences' bones but will never be heard again. A sketch of a lover on hotel stationary that the maid will throw away tomorrow. Our current reality exists by the influence of art that no one remembers.

Permanence is not purpose.

Olivia Butler was just one of very many Black women who were trying to incite people to listen to "extremists." This book wasn't fortune telling, it was a cautionary tale.

Her books aren't a set of predictions. They're a mirror of the reality that ignoring Black activists can create.

Imagine how much worse we'll be in 2050 if we continue to follow the same white liberal voices that insisted voices like hers were too radical to take seriously.

Who are you being told is "too left" and "too radical" today?

Ill tell you: they're Black and other organizers of color telling you capitalism, classism, imperliasm, and racism are weaved together and must be dismantled as such, even if it takes violence and threatens your first world comforts.

On the exact opposite end of the spectrum, one of the most elegant examples I saw of showing that a character was trans, was that a member of the protagonist team named Maia had stolen some important document that was an editable text file about experiments, and when the other characters read the file, it kept referring to “states of maiaer” and “antimaiaer”. One of her teammates realized that someone must’ve gone through and run automated find-and-replace on “Matt” to “Maia”.

#representation matters but be mindful of how you do it
