Won my first game of Diplomacy today!
I was Russia, we only had four players so Germany, Italy, and Turkey were unplayed. Austria and I made an early alliance, as did England and France. Because there were only four of us there wasn't much incentive to betray and those alliances lasted until the end of the game (1906). All the players were getting kind of bored/disheartened, so we decided to wrap it up and all select the "two-way draw" option to let the winning alliance get it over with. However while doing that, I changed my orders around to last-minute betray Austria and take two of her supply centers (Bud and Gre) while also capturing three others from enemies (Hol, Swe, and Edi) while maintaining a hold on a supply center I'd taken in the Spring (Den), and retaking one taken from me similarly (Nwy). All told I gained six supply centers in one turn, hitting 18 at the last second, turning a two-way draw into a complete victory for me.
(For the record, this was a really risky play and if this hadn't been the final turn, and hadn't worked, the entire board would have dedicated themselves to tearing me into brightly colored chunks. I didn't think it would work and did it because I wanted as high a score as I could get.)
Anyway yeah I really like Diplomacy and it was a lot of fun for me lol. I probably would've had a good time losing though, so I feel a little bad for winning.

Yes, Austria and Russia spent years fighting by each other's sides, while simultaneously trying to signal to their enemies that they were willing to backstab the other one. Their enemies mind you, whose only minor conflict was caused by Russia convincing England that France was preparing to invade her.

Frankly I don't think Microsoft has ever understood any market at any point in history.
In the 70s and 80s they lucked into making two decade-definingly good deals with catastrophically mismanaged hardware companies (Apple and IBM) and they've just been coasting on that monopoly power ever since. They have almost no good ideas or products beyond that "nobody ever got fired for buying ACME" quality, which they've also been slowly leaking.
Y'all remember Zune? I remember Zune. I had a Windows Phone as a kid. We made fun of Bing back then even more than we do now. People complain about Windows 11 the same way we complained about Windows 10, and before that 7! Microsoft hasn't done anything useful since the aughts. They exist now how many billionaires exist, got lucky and have been carried by their wealth through dozens of bad ideas and failed projects that have slowly proven to the world how god fucking awful they are. I have nothing but contempt for that company.
