unfortunately yes it's still a thing and a nightmare even for native/long time speakers depending situations (my dad's been there for +30 year and still gets mistaken sometime. been there my whole life and i'm still not sure if i should vous or tu my friend's parents.) but you're right, even in france, if people can clearly see it's not your first language, they usually don't mind and/or correct you right away

That being said, as soon as we hear someone has an accent, we let a lot of things slide. French is one hell of a language to learn so if someone tries to speak it, we're not gonna correct them on the technicalities. Sure, call that chair masculine, at least we understand you call it a chair. So if an older stranger with a weird accent asks me direction by saying "tu", I'm not going to be offended. But I am going to assume they don't know the language and/or customs.
