I think the conversation about transmisogyny in lesbian communities would benefit from more focus on efforts to actively include transfeminine people rather than the transmasculine people also exist in those communities. Not to say that transmasc lesbians aren't ever part of the problem. There are undoubtedly transmisogynist transmasculine lesbians. However the inclusion of transmaculine people in lesbian communities is not inherently a cause of transfeminine lesbians being excluded.

Instead of inane roundabout discussions about word meaning or whether this or that type of person should be allowed to call themselves a lesbian the focus ought to on all non-transfeminine lesbians learning to examine their unconscious transmisogynist biases and working toward actively including transfemme lesbians in their communities. Part of that is of course challenging the idea that people AFAB have some inherent claim to lesbian identity that people AMAB do not. It may even involve some introspection on the part of transmasculine lesbians into why they feel connected to lesbian as a label and considering if that bio-essentialist and transmisogynist idea may be an unconscious part of that. However I do not think we can achieve any improvement on transfemme lesbian exclusion by trying to litigate which people should or should not be allowed to call themselves lesbians.

More simply put the issue with the exclusionist transmisogynist lesboy is not that he identifies as a lesbian, its that he is a transmisogynist. Scrutinizing his identity does nothing but make him more defensive and likely to double down. It is way more productive to point out the ways transmisogyny manifests amoung non-transfeminine lesbians and provide concrete strategies for combating it. Of course it should ideally be other non-transfemme lesbians taking on the brunt of this work. It should not be the constant job of transfeminine lesbians to have to educate cis and transmasc members of their community. To that end I would encourage all transmaculine lesbians, and cis lesbians too for that matter, to listen to transfeminine lesbians when they talk about being excluded and abused by other lesbians. Take a look at your communities both off and online and find actionable ways to make them more welcoming to transfemmes. This includes knowing how to spot and route out covert transmisogyny amoung people in those communities, which in turn involves learning about transmisogyny. All of which is a better use of time than arguing online about what labels can or can't be used by which people.
