Tom Gauld - Personajes epicos
Wow, now I want to write something that has all of these. In order. :)
I have Tom's print of this on the wall in my house, have had it for over a decade, and I look at it all the time and imagine the day that I will begin a book with everybody in it. But never wanted to put them in order.

Tips for writing those gala scenes, from someone who goes to them occasionally:
Generally you unbutton and re-button a suit coat when you sit down and stand up.
Youâre supposed to hold wine or champagne glasses by the stem to avoid warming up the liquid inside. A character out of their depth might hold the glass around the sides instead.
When rich/important people forget your name and theyâre drunk, they usually just tell you that they donât remember or completely skip over any opportunity to use your name so they donât look silly.
A good way to indicate you donât want to shake someoneâs hand at an event is to hold a drink in your right hand (and if youâre a woman, a purse in the other so you definitely canât shift the glass to another hand and then shake)
Americans who still kiss cheeks as a welcome generally donât press lips to cheeks, itâs more of a touch of cheek to cheek or even a hover (these days, mostly to avoid smudging a womanâs makeup)
The distinctions between dress codes (black tie, cocktail, etc) are very intricate but obvious to those who know how to look. If you wear a short skirt to a black tie event for example, people would clock that instantly even if the dress itself was very formal. Same thing goes for certain articles of menâs clothing.
Open bars / cash bars at events usually carry limited options. Theyâre meant to serve lots of people very quickly, so nobody is getting a cosmo or a Manhattan etc.
Members of the press generally arenât allowed to freely circulate at nicer galas/events without a very good reason. When they do, they need to identify themselves before talking with someone.

Things that People Forget About When Writing Sword Fights
You donât have to dodge by a foot. You only have to dodge by an inch.
Not all swords are made the same way. You wouldnât fight with a katana the same way you would fight with a broadsword.
You donât need to aim for the heart or the head. Get the vein in wrist, and you could incapacitate that hand.
Small cuts matter. If youâre cut up enough, youâre going to start suffering from blood loss, and thatâll put you at a disadvantage.
The blade isnât the only thing that matters. There isnât some set of rules in sword fighting where you can only stick the stabby end into the other person. Hit them in the head with the hilt, and theyâll feel it.
If there are multiple attackers, you want to incapacitate or kill each one as quickly as possible. Endurance matters, especially when youâre not only swinging/stabbing/aiming something that is 2-5 lbs (ceremonial ones were a lot heavier, but wouldnât be generally fought with) but also taking/blocking heavy blows from at least one opponent.
You donât have to dodge
by a foot. You only have
to dodge by an inch.
Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
That final haiku actually makes for a pretty good maxim!
Seven years after, I see you again đ
Guys this completely changed my writing, heed it. I often do an entire draft just looking at sentence variation and oftentimes the results are absolutely transformative in the difference.
This is very very good advice, and absolutely worth following. Read this. Read it again. Follow it. Your writing will get much, much better.
I agree, this is certainly one of the writing advices that opened my eyes and changed the way I was writing. It made it so much better, and I still remember that this post stuck in my mind. It did it.
I love using âgood catchâ
I also say âthanks for the updateâ or âthanks for the headâs up!â
âI really appreciate the headâs up!â also a classic
If I havenât gotten back to someone in a swift enough period (i.e. one work day max) I say âthank you for your patience. after some consideration, I have decidedâŠâ
donât apologize for piddly things!Â
thank you > sorry
I need to remember
thank you > sorry
Thank you for waiting for me > sorry for being late
Thank you for helping me/for your time/for listening to me > sorry for bothering you
Thanking someone when they do you a favour > apologizing for your existence
This is especially hard when you havenât been taught that people need to respect your limits, but with a bit of practice you can absolutely get there!

Homie gonna share this
5 things your character can't do while speaking
Choke. Just think about it, seriously. Think about what choking is and imagine speaking while itâs happening. That would fuckinâ hurt, man.
Hiss. Look, itâs just not possible, okay? No matter how âevilâ you want your character to seem.
Snarl. Animals snarls. The Beast from Beauty and the Beast snarls. The Hulk snarls. You know who doesnât snarl? PEOPLE WHEN THEYâRE SPEAKING.
Shriek. Come on, 99% of the time, âshriekâ is not the word you want.Letâs face it: if you put an exclamation point at the end of the sentence, your reader gets the picture. Donât bring to mind banshees and screaming toddlers.
Sneer. Iâm not even going to bother explaining this one. âSNEERâ ISNâT EVEN A SOUND.
Choked is not meant to be taken literally, an obstruction in the throat. It means theyâre having difficultly speaking, theyâre forcing the words out with difficulty. Often used when the character is convulsed in tears or laughter.
Hiss is a low, threatening whisper. Raw, guttural, vicious. It is NOT a literal hiss like an animal, it is a tone of voice that serves the same function. Someone will hiss that theyâre going to cut your throat- a message from one person to the other.
Snarl is the same kind of thing. Not literal, itâs a tone of voice that serves the same function. Itâs raw and gutteral like a hiss, but more savage than vicious. Itâs loud, itâs showy, itâs intimidating. Itâs very alpha male, big man, look at how fucking dangerous I am. Iâll take ALL of you on. Even if theyâre snarling at one person in particular, nobody better back them up or theyâre gonna get fucked up too.
Shriek. Come on, seriously? Weâve all heard people shriek either in fear or outrage. High pitched, loud, out of control, feminine. Men can shriek, but itâs funny and emasculating. Think angry italian women throwing pots and pans or ladies on tables who just saw a mouse.
Sneering is contempt whether itâs a facial expression or a tone of voice or both. There are a hundred different ways to sneer with your voice, but it all adds up to the same thing.
How descriptive words work 101
Op radiating cinema sins energy with that list lol
OP tagging this as âreasons they stop reading a book in ch 1â yet not grasping like the most basic form of figurative language is⊠something

Honestly? My main piece of advice for writing well-rounded characters is to make them a little bit lame. No real living person is 100% cool and suave 100% of the time. Everyone's a little awkward sometimes, or gets too excited about something goofy, or has a silly fear, or laughs about stupid things. Being a bit of a loser is an incurable part of the human condition. Utilize that in your writing.
some of the best writing advice Iâve ever received: always put the punch line at the end of the sentence.
it doesnât have to be a âpunch lineâ as in the end of a joke. It could be the part that punches you in the gut. The most exciting, juicy, shocking info goes at the end of the sentence. Two different examples that show the difference it makes:
doing it wrong:
She saw her brotherâs dead body when she caught the smell of something rotting, thought it was coming from the fridge, and followed it into the kitchen.
doing it right:
Catching the smell of something rotten wafting from the kitchenâprobably from the fridge, she thoughtâshe followed the smell into the kitchen, and saw her brotherâs dead body.
Periods are where you stop to process the sentence. Put the dead body at the start of the sentence and by the time you reach the end of the sentence, youâve piled a whole kitchen and a weird fridge smell on top of it, and THEN you have to process the body, and itâs buried so much it barely has an impact. Put the dead body at the end, and itâs like an emotional exclamation point. Everythingâs normal and then BAM, her brotherâs dead.
This rule doesnât just apply to sentences: structuring lists or paragraphs like this, by putting the important info at the end, increases their punch too. Itâs why in tropes like Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking or Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick, the odd item out comes at the end of the list.
Subverting this rule can also be used to manipulate readerâs emotional reactions or tell them how shocking they SHOULD find a piece of information in the context of a story. For example, a more conventional sentence that follows this rule:
She opened the pantry door, looking for a jar of grape jelly, but the view of the shelves was blocked by a ghost.
Oh! Thereâs a ghost! Thatâs shocking! Probably the character in our sentence doesnât even care about the jelly anymore because the spirit of a dead person has suddenly appeared inside her pantry, and thatâs obviously a much higher priority. But, subvert the rule:
She opened the pantry door, found a ghost blocking her view of the shelves, and couldnât see past it to where the grape jelly was supposed to be.
Because the ghost is in the middle of the sentence, itâs presented like itâs a mere shelf-blocking pest, and thus less important than the REAL goal of this sentence: the grape jelly. The ghost is diminished, and now you get the impression that the character is probably not too surprised by ghosts in her pantry. Maybe it lives there. Maybe she sees a dozen ghosts a day. In any case, itâs not a big deal. Even though both sentences convey the exact same information, they set up the reader to regard the presence of ghosts very differently in this story.
