I learned in my political science class that all major famines in the 20th century and onward have been caused by oppressive groups or political situations restricting access to food, NOT natural causes like crop failure
This is literally the point that Indian economist Amartya Sen made that won him the Nobel prize in economics. As a child, he survived one of the several Bengal famines that were organised by the British colonisers in India. He developed his theory on famines, which is that they were more about distribution of food rather than production or availability of it
i was so naive in thinking that spirk shippers were exaggerating. what the fuck is wrong with these two.

do it grieving
do it while the ground falls out from under you; do it while everything you loved goes up in smoke; do it while the dream of your future is still burning embers around you; build anew on the hot ashes of everything you worked for; keep going, keep loving, keep living, even as all you want is to turn back (there is no turning back; it is gone already); do it through grief, which feels like fear in the body
do it grieving
The tag I have seen most often on this post is "I needed to hear this," and I am so, so grateful to have said something that was needed. These words came out of the depths of my own grief, and I am so grateful to have made this small connection with others in the midst of it. Grief is isolating and indescribable, but none of us are alone.
That said, these tags were what I needed to hear:
we're all gonna make it
it's okay if you can't see how yet. you don't have to believe in better. for now it is enough to just keep going, and eventually the path will emerge. you are not alone. you are not lost in the woods forever. keep going. I love you.

I know weâre all like lawless nonconformists but you really canât be texting and driving. thatâs one of the ones youâve gotta listen to for real
Not even at stoplights!!! I know itâs so so tempting to just glance at your phone when youâre stopped, but thereâs actually something called âdistraction hangoverâ where even once you put your phone down, your brain is still processing the interaction and isnât fully paying attention to the road for up to 30 seconds afterwards. So itâs still really dangerous even if youâre stopped when you look at your phone. If you need to check something on your phone, pull over.
this especially applies to people with adhd. you know that symptom you may have heard of called âdifficulty transitioning between tasksâ? you donât want piloting a ton or two of potential death to be the task you canât mentally switch back to.
Interesting! I hadn't heard of the "distraction hangover" before, turns out because it's pretty recent research!
thereâs a t-shirt that says âI survived a bad day and all I got was the rest of my lifeâ and yeah I still think about it
im always the biggest hater to the âthey settled down and had kids :)â aus because like why does every happy ending have to involve the nuclear family bullshit. some people shouldnt have kids and sometimes that person is your blorbo who would neglect a tamagotchi
I wish there was more room in media for admitting that one's romantic partner is not always the most important person in one's life. And not that shitty copout approach where a person gets super irrationally jealous and then is validated when their partner is like "oh, babe, that's just my best friend! they mean nothing to me! you, my romantic partner of two months who somehow never met any of my friends or family before today? you are my most important person."
Like I want more "you light up when this other person walks into the room... and I have no right to be upset because that's your ten-year-old sister". But no, it's always instead written like "no worries, babe! you are more important than even my own darling family I'm just supporting my little sister until she gets her own romantic partner to fill in for me!" and that's just super fucking weird. There's this prevailing belief that if a relationship is more intense, then there is some inherent sexual nature to it. Once you're pursuing or in an active romantic relationship, you're not permitted to find joy with other people anymore. Your happiness belongs to someone else, now. You must purge yourself of all earthly attachments... except for your boyfriend, Steve.
I hate the like, modern tiktokification of CAPTIONS. Flashing one word at a time super quickly, usually with some annoying bouncy effect on each word. Put the entire goddamn sentence (or appropriate chunk of the sentence) on the screen and let me read.

it is p funny that texts that place a particular emphasis on deconstructing black and white thinking and moral absolutism tend to have the most agonizingly moralizing fanbases oat that r very fixated on engaging with these fictional characters exclusively through the lens of morality powerscaling
u guys hunger for strictly didactic fiction
an important skill to cultivate in fandom (and in life) is the ability to tell the difference between somebody who is engaging in thoughtful criticism and somebody who wants to make themselves feel important by making you feel bad
the thing the latter kind of fans often do is position themselves as an authority on fandom topics, but their authority manifests almost entirely negatively, and they are defensive about maintaining that appearance of authority and presenting questions about it as a personal attack.
if anybody asks them why they are in a fandom that makes them so miserable, or why they engage with a canon that they don't even seem to like or take any joy from, they respond with "oh so now we have to love everything like unthinking idiots? we have to accept all the garbage given to us? we have to endure the way the writer/showrunner/company mistreats us? stop forcing your toxic positivity on everybody!"
a classic and obvious example from mdzs/cql fandom are the jiang cheng antis whose entire fandom experience is defined by aggressively hating a fictional character and berating other fans as morally bankrupt and delusional, and insisting to outlandish degrees that they understand the real meaning of how terrible the character is, and therefore the themes of the book/show, better than all the rest of the foolish, unthinking fans who lack their insight.
another classic and obvious example from kpop are the akgaes/solo fans, or the subset of fans obsessed with mistreatment narratives. a big part of this is always claiming to have special knowledge about real intentions or motivations, and they will state those claims in superior or self-pitying ways that sound like "oh i wish i could mindlessly love this the way you do. i wish i could be uncritical. but i can see the truth of how bad it is so i just can't. it's so unfair that i'm not allowed to love things, but that's my burden to bear."
that's two examples but these people exist in every fandom. they are the ones who make you earnestly wonder "why are you in a fandom that makes you so unhappy?" then you see how much engagement they get, how actively and completely they submerge themselves in the echo chamber they've created, and it makes sense.
the thing is, it's easy to shame people into feeling bad by claiming to know better, even if what you are saying is nonsense. that's a foundational principle of the internet. (and religion. and politics. and the worst kinds of online activism. etc.)
i don't even think most of these fans are doing it on purpose. i think negativity farms engagement, and people mistake engagement for connection, and lonely, miserable people desperately want connection. one way to achieve a pale facsimile of connection in fandom is for your primary mode of interaction to consist of preying on other people's anxiety about liking things that are bad or wrong or harmful.
