Sometimes I’m looking for something online - often “how to” articles - and I want to filter for - like - a website that was clearly built in 2010 at the latest, which may or may not have been updated since then, but contains a vast wealth of information on one topic, painstakingly organized by an unknown legend in the field with decades’ worth of experience. I don’t want a listicle with a nice stolen picture in a slideshow format written by a content aggregator that God forgot. I want hand-drawn diagrams by some genius professor who doesn’t understand SEO at all, but understands making stir-fries or raising stick insects better than anyone else on this earth. I don’t know what search settings to put into Google to get this.
thank you for articulating this cri de coeur for me
ngl these days i’m just happy when it’s not a video
search.marginalia.nu is the search engine you want!
The search engine calculates a score that aggressively favors text-heavy websites, and punishes those that have too many modern web design features.
This is in a sense the opposite of what most major search engines do, they favor modern websites over old-looking ones. Most links you find here will be nearly impossible to find on a regular search engine, as they aren’t sufficiently search engine optimized.
“It is a search engine, designed to help you find what you didn’t even know you were looking for. If you search for “Plato”, you might for example end up at the Canterbury Tales. Go looking for the Canterbury Tales, and you may stumble upon Neil Gaiman’s blog.
If you are looking for fact, this is almost certainly the wrong tool. If you are looking for serendipity, you’re on the right track. When was the last time you just stumbled onto something interesting, by the way?
I don’t expect this will be the next “big” search engine. This is and will remain a niche tool for a niche audience.“
i clicked around for a few minutes searching various things and I now have two fourteenth century pie crust recipes and an apple filling recipe i want to try, so thanks!
it has been twenty minutes and I am deeply in love with this search engine.
INCREDIBLE. I *do* want to know how to test Windows 95 for Y2K Compliance and I am glad that someone is still hosting step by step instructions for that.
tl;dr: search.marginalia.nu for the old or old looking and just plain serendipitous stuff that google or Duck duck go are gonna not find/bury on the 20th page. For perfectly good reasons, but …
My absolute favorite part of having made this post - other than causing people to be introduced to this site - are the people in the tags/comments talking about their interests and stuff they found about their hobbies.
Good luck out there surfing the cyberweb, you crazy cats. I love the shoelace website too - Ian’s Shoelace Site [link], unless there’s another. My personal favorite old-school site is Alysion’s string figure collection [link].
"Verrohung", "Vertrauenskrise" Brudi, dich mag seit über 20 Jahren keiner 😭
The older i get the more i understand why some people become obsessed with privacy, not because they’re hiding something, but because being constantly perceived starts to feel spiritually exhausting.
Did you know that soda machines at restaurants and movie theaters spy on you? That most common new cars now record your sexual preferences and send it to the manufacturer (and also data about anyone who also gets in your car, walks by your car, and maybe happens to be within visual range of your car)? That grocery stores are trying to force customers to download an app to scan barcodes on shelves instead of putting up prices, so the app can scan the phone, decide how much that customer should be squeezed for, and adjust the price? That more and more innocent people are being sent to jail for crimes committed hundreds of miles away because an AI facial recognition algorithm spit their faces out and the cops didn't bother to do the most basic of checks?
I am not uptight about privacy because I'm hiding something. I'm uptight about it because the people who dismiss my right to privacy are dangerous to you and me and our families, personally, all the time.
And often, they are assholes, too.

Now that everyone is discussing Nolan's Odyssey movie, I feel like it's a good time to let non-Italians know that the production dumped plastic props into the Italian sea. Weirdly enough I could not find any article in English about it but it's a fucking problem nonetheless.
I might translate this article later today. This one was the most complete one, even in Italian news it's not talked about that much.
Non è la prima volta che la produzione solleva un vespaio in Sicilia. A Lipari una squadra di sub sarebbe però già impegnata a bonificare i
They dumped plastic skeletons in environmentally protected areas, against the literal contracts they had to sign to get the permits to film in environmentally protected areas. Like they not only did a bad ecological thing that freaked out some divers, they literally broke environmental protection laws and their contract with the Italian government
I do think that one day we’re going to have to talk about how “autism moms” are victims too but we’re fr not ready and probably won’t be for a very long time. but i’ll just say there’s a reason there aren’t “autism dads” and it’s not bc women are uniquely evil towards autistic children.
this would also require us to have a conversation about the appropriateness of “autism” as a diagnosis for such a wide variety of presentations and the fact that over-inclusion makes things functionally meaningless. bc a lot of the demonization of “autism moms” (and dgmr I fundamentally disagree with autism moms but listen) hinges on the fact that low-support needs, functionally just socially awkward autistic people dominate the narrative obscuring that there are aggressive, nonverbal, extremely high support needs children with only an “autism” diagnosis and all of their care is falling just on mom bc there is absolutely no social or behavioral support network for these women, nevermind functional social services.
like… of course they want a “cure”… of course they resent their children. they’re functionally trapped. their entire lives revolve around the care of these kids (who often physically hurt them) who they are completely unequipped to deal with or help with absolutely no end in sight. they’re not right in their conclusions but you can see why they want to believe them. you can see why they are desperate for a way out if you only just consider for a second that they are human beings being utterly failed by society and not just evil monsters who hate their kid who likes trains a little too much.
and while we’re at it we’ll probably have to talk about self dxing as autistic as a form of “not like other girls”-ism and moral superiority/virtue signaling which led to these “socially awkward at best” types becoming the face of autism and further obscuring and demonizing these mothers who are genuinely suffering and need support. if autism is just Better Than You Disorder then ofc there’s no reason for anyone to feel bad for “autism moms”, they’re obviously just mean girl karens fulfilling their role in your perpetual persecution complex, after all, you’re “autistic” and you’re fine! you don’t need significantly more support or resources than your mother alone could ever hope to provide for you.
the year is 2035. the new beauty standard is for women to cut their ears off, as ears are a masculine trait which make the face look too big and hearing isnt necessary as it doesnt align with being demure. evil feminists say perhaps this is unnecessary and ears are natural. women are agressively proclaiming they are cutting their ears off due to sensory issues
“Most men don’t even care if a woman cuts her ears off. They don’t even notice! Women cut their ears off for other women.”
“Most women I know cut their ears off because they want to and like how it looks.”
“The majority of women aren’t doing this for you, they cut their ears off for themselves, to feel more confident and put together”
“I did it for myself. I don't like the feel of having ears and my earlobes would get infected from my earrings. And I like the look without them.”
“I didn’t cut my ears off, I don’t see the reason to. I always wear a hat in public anyway.”
(Btw: All of these are paraphrased real responses from women on reddit when asked “Why do you wear makeup?” and “Why do you shave?”)

You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense 😭
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have

Spin the wheel. That's who's trying to kill you.
Spin the wheel again. That’s who’s trying to protect you.
(If you have zero idea about a name you got, spin until you see someone you recognize.)
Are you safe?
Absolutely not. I'm dead. 100% dead.
I might stay alive, but it'll be a really close thing.
I'll take some hits, for certain, but I should be okay in the end.
A few attacks might get through, but nothing concerning.
The attacker might be able to get in one lucky hit. If that.
I am the opposite of worried. I'm 100% safe.
…Look. I've tried picturing this. But I honestly don't know how to answer.
(I've run this poll twice before, expanding it significantly for the second run. With about a year passed since that second run, I thought it was time to add another couple hundred names to the list and have another go.)
So annoying to me when people think citing the actions of FICTIONAL female characters counts as evidence that femininity doesn't hold women back. "Omg, she can run and fight with heels and a dress! What an icon, I can't even walk in heels." She is not real, and therefore her body doesn't follow the same laws that ours do. She will do whatever the writers want her to, because she is ANIMATED. And even if the actor is a real person, the scene is choreographed, rehearsed and edited with CGI. It's fake!
Not only do these types of outfits make the stunts harder to pull off, they can also make them more dangerous. “I actually was put into a fire sequence in a negligee,” Donna Keegan, whose credits include “Independence Day” and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” told me. “Do you know how flammable negligees are? They just kept dousing flame retardant stuff all over it.” “One time, I had to dive through a plate glass window with a spaghetti strap top on and in a miniskirt with Doc Marten boots,” Keegan recalled. “You're not getting candy glass for that kind of piece. No matter what they're going to do, there are shards. ... You come out a porcupine, bleeding everywhere.” Their skin's exposed, and they often don’t have any padding. “Try doing stunts with no pads and no clothing. I have been thrown down marble stairs in a bra and underwear,” Keegan said, remarking that the first time she saw that set, “I looked at that and went, ‘You're kidding me, right?’”
Source: Documentary lauds Hollywood stuntwomen, who do everything men do but in high heels (Sept. 22, 2020)
One of the most sought-after stuntwomen in Hollywood, Ms. [Zoe] Bell crashes through glass, slams into book cases and leaps from tall buildings. She has done stunts on more than 20 films and television series, including "Alias," "Kill Bill" and "Xena: Warrior Princess." Asked if she could accomplish a 22-story spinning fall from a skyscraper for 2004's "Catwoman," Ms. Bell thought for a moment and said, "Yes, I can." To get the chilling fall just right, she did it four times. "It's not until after you've been hit by a car and landed all right that the fear kicks in," she said. Stuntwomen often face greater dangers than their male cohorts. While stuntmen wear pads under their clothing, stuntwomen in action films are often minimally clothed; there is no place to hide padding or protective gear in their bikinis or ball gowns. Doubling for Sharon Stone, Ms. Bell had to do the high fall in "Catwoman" in high heels. "Because that's how women fight and die—in heels," she said, with a slight roll of her eyes.

I just watched a video on companies admitting AI is actually useless and having massive losses over using it; I'm excited by this!
The woman who created the video said the strategy for AI was to push it into every possible app, service and program, hoping it would become a neccesary convenience and people would eventually depend on it and become willing to pay for it. But it never became that; all surveys showed that 90% of people wanted nothing to do with AI and CEO's didn't want to hear it.
There's been protests and vandalizing over the build of Data centers, which is a bit louder than filling out a survey, so they know by now a lot of people are ready to fight against it.
That gives me hope, maybe we'll get to experience post-AI internet. I've been refusing to reblog so much art and photography, basically limiting myself to people I personally know took the photos or accounts that swore to research every single thing they post. It's been sad! Artists and photographers missing out on attention they deserve and me missing out on having a blog filled with photos and art.
I imagine in post-AI internet it will be so rare to stumble on a piece of AI art, I'll be able to use tumblr normally again. And if someone does insist on posting AI they get outed and cancelled, and all the AI is like 5yrs old because you can't generate more.
What else do you think might change? We get rid of the AI summary? People no longer go into AI psychosis? Level of literacy goes up? Price of utilities goes down? Global warming levels get sorted out? Finally some stuff to look forward to! Not that I expect they'll give up and we'll just wake up with no AI one day. But any withdrawal of the disease is the reason to celebrate.
The video I watched is be the "Skullie by the sea" on youtube if you wanna go check it out!
It seems the video has disappeared? Or at least I can't find it anywhere. It appeared on my feed yesterday but now it doesn't seem to be findable. Am I just bad at finding or are they quickly removing anti-AI content? That is desparate behaviour.
Oh I found it! It was on her second channel that was not immediately obvious to me. Here's the link
I look at the dates of the post. If it's like 2018, then I know it's real, or at least good Photoshop. But I can't wait for a time when I can just binge reblog pretty photos again like I used to.
Can I hijack this and show y'all something?
So this is ai bubble rn.
Well Nvidia also started opening subsidiary companies, selling itself hardware and put it as a revenue on the spreadsheet.
They are artificially pumping eachothers stock prices by signing contracts and promising to buy mostly unproduced hardware to put in unbuilt datacenters. Meanwhile they are all hemorrhaging money.
Stonks.
