i saw someone say nobody needs to know what a .txt file is anymore. what the fuck is the world coming to
unironically i think we need to bring back computer labs because APPARENTLY some people WERENT taught basic computer literacy and internet safety in school
things about computers/the internet i think kids should be formally taught in schools because theyre important to know and the amount of soon to be grown adults i know who know NOTHING about any of these is quite frankly almost all of them (and resources to learn if you dont know these things, because its never to late to get better with computers)
how to troubleshoot by yourself when you have a technical problem
what common file types are
some very basics on how to use ""developer tools"" on your computer (because i cant think of a better way to refer to them) like task manager and command prompt (and their mac equivalents, terminal and activity monitor ofc)
how to read and understand a privacy policy and what your personal data is, as well as what it being collected actually means and steps you can take to keep it private
how to understand terms of service (hey. if you have trouble with reading legalese and worry about being able to understand these policies anyways, here's a site that gives basic summaries of privacy policies and ToS)
what a cookie actually is
internet privacy and your digital footprint!! seriously i dont know why we stopped teaching people that they shouldnt be putting their entire real identity online in a world where your online actions can ruin you irl
basic safety measures like antivirus software (and why you should use it or if the built in one on windows or mac is enough for you) and backing up your computer (also a mac guide)
common keyboard shortcuts (and on mac)
as an additional note: things i think everyone should know on computers and the internet but schools may bit hesitant to teach about for whatever moral/legal standards schools pretend to operate on
vpns and adblockers! (btw for most of these where you can pay for things im purposefully not recommending any specific software but seriously just use ublock origin for an adblocker)
how to not get a virus while pirating something
what a temporary email is and when to use one
red flags that you shouldn't trust a website (and how to quickly check the security of a site)
what javascript on a website does and how to disable it to get around paywalls
ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)
an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous
a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps
a guide to some syntax and commands you should know (this was literally my lifeline in my first CS class)
some performance tasks to give you things to code to practice and assess yourself
for prev! sorry for the late reply, i had to dig through my history for the tiktok that made me angry about this because i saw it over a week ago and didnt save it (and i unfortunately have gotten into the nasty habit of using tiktok too much lately so it took a WHILE to scroll through)
but! heres the original tiktok and the comment thread i was responding to
the last comment (predictably) is what i was upset about here. by "what a txt file is" its not specifically an issue with not knowing about that file type. its more of a general anger at the lack of willingness for people to learn basic things.
what a txt file is should be considered common knowledge if you use computers at all. if you even read what the extension is and think about it for a few seconds you can take a pretty damn good guess (txt is one letter off from text, if you want to use context clues from this tiktok, op is writing stuff down. you can assume its a file with written words). but this comment to me radiates such a fucking willful ignorance, even if the person writing it knows what it is. "the average person doesnt need to know it" as if its perfectly normal to live in a world where you dont know how anything you interact with regularly works.
almost everyone in our modern era interacts with computers on a daily basis, even if they dont think about it that way. your phone is a computer even if you dont call it that. it functions on code and files the same way any other device does. you should know these things.
so uh. "nobody needs to know what a txt file is anymore" is basically a shortened version of "why doesnt anybody know or want to know how the devices they interact with regularly work?"
i think its really important for people to know these things even outside of a general curiosity standpoint. if you know how your computer works youre less likely to be victimized by scams and malware. you wont need to call IT every time you have a minor technical issue. if you know what happens to the data you share online you can take some basic steps to protect yourself from data breaches that can result in things like identity theft (and if youre reading this and saying that sounds like a stretch, i assure you its not. it happens to plenty of people, and it can happen to you. this is also a reason why you should be scared of the UK's online safety act- you're one irresponsible company not properly disposing of this information and a data breach away from mass identity theft. it happened with discord. it could happen to you.)
so the information here is what i think is essential for being online in a world that wants your wallet. companies want to know everything about who you are so they can sell it. scammers want to know those same things so they can make their scams more convincing. nobody wants you to know how to handle things on your own so youll give them money to do it for you instead.
thats why i want to share these things. i dont want people to become victims to companies that want whats best for their wallets in a world where those same people are encouraged to just be part of the system without a question of its functions or its necessity
but to answer the question you have all been waiting for: what is a txt file? it is a file that stores plain and unformatted text. thank you for reading :)

Different Stories Resonate with Different People
I will always reblog this.
I once spent three hours scouring the internet to find this comic again, I will not let that be repeated.
reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics
@dragonpyre any chance you could elaborate on this
I grew up learning about land formations. Seeing fictional maps that don’t follow the logic and science of them makes me upset
What are the most common sins you’ve seen relating to this? I wanna know
Mordor.
Why is the mountain range square. How did the mountain range form. Why is there one singular volcano in the center. Why does it act like a composite volcano but have magma that acts like it’s from a shield. If it’s hotspot based volcanic activity why is there only one volcano.
And then the misty mountains!!!! Why isn’t there a rain shadow!! And why is there a FOREST where the rain shadow should be!!!!!!!!
So what is a rain shadow?
Wind blows clouds in from the sea, but mountains are so tall the clouds can't get past 'em, so you get deserts on the windward side of mountain ranges because clouds can't get there to water the land, or do so only very rarely.
Oh yeah nothing is more annoying than fantasy maps that can't get mountains, rivers and rain shadows right.
May I recommend my new favorite tool: Mapgen4. You start with a random seed and then add mountains, valleys, shallow water, or oceans as you like. You can adjust the wind direction to make wind shadows off the mountains fall where you want. You can adjust overall raininess to make the rivers larger or smaller, or have more or fewer tributaries. It works best for small, isolated landmasses (think islands more than continents) but as there’s no scale bar and it’s all slightly abstracted anyway you can do whatever you want with it. I’ve only just started playing with it but it’s SO FUN.
I do think this could be useful for writers! ...Caveat, if you're going to use this for making a map for anything published (digital or paper, even if it's only in a fanfic archive or whatever), please, please credit the creator and their program as how you made that map! The more ways information like this gets out there, the more useful it'll be to other writers, roleplaying game DMs/GMs, creators, etc.
One of my favourites for mapping plates, biomes, etc is Tectonics.js. If you're familiar with how tectonics shape a planet, you can guess where the features go by toggling plates, crust thickness, etc. Between Mapgen4 and Tectonics.js, we've got some pretty sweet tools at our disposal.

Reshaping Reality's Worldbuilding Tips
Worldbuilding pasta's series, An Apple Pie from Scratch also check their resources page!
R/worldbuilding's Reading List. Also check out their collected resources link. This basic geology guide from 11 years ago is still nice.
Creating an Earth-Like Planet, and The Climate Cookbook (aka Geoff's Climate Cookbook) technically the climate cookbook is a part of Creating an Earth like Planet I think.
Related: Worldbuilding Workshop's "Working Out Climates Using Geoff’s Climate Cookbook." Which goes through using the resource in order to map make. Also just the Worldbuilding Workshop in General.
Madeline James Writes's Worldbuilding Guide
Worldbuilding 101 (this links to the Biomes section but there's like...everything.)
Also I would recommend looking into Landscape Archaeology as well! That's because Landscape archeology is basically adding the social/cultural layer on top of all that geology and geography. Environments change when communities live in them, and communities likewise adapt to various environments.
This is a short free introduction to the concept: "Notes on Landscape Archaeology." To summarize, Landscape archaeology sort of like...studies the relation of people to places/spaces (that is, landscapes) in time.
Also this paper [An Archeology of Landscapes] breaks down/introduces the key concepts that I learned which is first that you can form the "construct paradigm" of a landscape from settlement ecology, ritual landscapes, and ethnic landscapes.
And then the highlights of their summary of what constitutes defining a landscape:
Landscapes are not synonymous with natural environments. Landscapes are synthetic (Jackson, 1984, p. 156), with cultural systems structuring and organizing peoples’ interactions with their natural environments ...
Landscapes are worlds of cultural product ... Through their daily activities, beliefs, and values, communities transform physical spaces into meaningful places. ...
Landscapes are the arena for all of a community’s activities. Thus landscapes not only are constructs of human populations but they also are the milieu in which those populations survive and sustain themselves. A landscape’s domain involves patterning in both within-place and between-place contexts ...
Landscapes are dynamic constructions, with each community and each generation imposing its own cognitive map on an anthropogenic world of interconnected morphology, arrangement, and coherent meaning ...
Basically a "landscape" is made by a community living in an environment. Once you have a geological environment that makes sense, landscape archaeology is like... Basically how I feel confident knowing where trade routes would be on a map, where there are areas of continual high conflict, what kinds of agriculture exists where, etc. once the geological stuff is hammered out, it's like...I know how that would influence the local cultures and vice versa. At that point, it's easy to start marking the natural borders, settlements, trade/port cities, and even strategic fortresses. If you have properly put rivers on a map, then marking your port cities is effortless, basically.
Also:
This course syllabus for a Landscape Archaeology class is freely accessible. It includes an online resources page.
Place, Landscape, and Environment: Anthropological Archaeology in 2009
(Landscape Biographies is open access, as is Landscape Archaeology between Art and Science: From a Multi- to an Interdisciplinary Approach. But I wouldn't try to read every essay.)
If you are like me and find it helpful to have video reference for a process/activity in addition to a written guide, Artifexian is a YouTube channel that does a LOT of world building stuff and specifically he's in the process of creating a world following a lot of Worldbuilding Pasta's methodology!

Just to make a point, every time I finished a panel of this I would export it as a PNG on the perceptual setting and use it as a color reference for the next panel
IT'S BAD
PLEASE CHECK YOUR COLOR SETTINGS
EDIT: If you're still having problems, it might help to switch from "Save/Save as" to "Export (as a) Single Layer". Just. Make SURE the box labeled "Expression Color" is set to RGB. I've been messing with this all day, and it looks like this combination of settings will allow exported PNGs to maintain their colors perfectly. To you. So far both Discord and Toyhouse still only display desaturated images and I cannot for the life of me figure out why
WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN ITS NOT JUST A MAC PROBLEM
GUYS IT HAPPENS WITH KRITA TOO
is there like….a way to check how to do that for procreate?
cause I’ve noticed the same thing so I’ve just been eye picking colors for like…two years now
THERE IS!
ive been noticing the EXACT SAME PROBLEM whenever i would export an image from procreate and it drove me CRAZY that my art would desaturate all the time. anyway, if you're in a canvas, go to settings > canvas > canvas information > color profile
once youre in color profile, if your current color profile is display P3, CHANGE IT!!!!!! it is desaturating your colors. you're gonna want to change it to sRGB IEC6 1966-2.1 instead
if you're starting a new canvas, you can just go to color profile and change it that way. im SO grateful for this post for giving me the push i needed to experiment with procreate files and finally see what was changing my art to be so desaturated
like LOOK at this!!!!
anyway yeah. tldr if youre using procreate, make sure your color profile is sRBG IEC6 1966-2.1
i know we joke about cis artists having the weirdest sense of anatomy, but also even when the anatomy is fine, no one seems to want to draw women doing normal things
Drawing challenge: draw your favorite male characters like this
this is exactly why i’m a huge fan of posemaniacs!
you get 3d model pose references with the option of having a male or female anatomy for each pose
they have a WIDE VARIETY of poses that you can search for using a TAG SYSTEM
(as you can see by the scroll bar in the second image there is Even More Tags)
you can select a pose you like for larger viewing and the convenience doesn’t stop!!!
you have full 360 viewing range of the pose plus zooming in and out
and what’s that? a TOOLBAR?? MENU?? THING??
Correct!
the eye button hold a very fun menu
negative space blacks out the background and fills the pose with a solid white silhouette
the “texture” refers to the skin situation of the model with the “color” and “grey” shown below
(i usually use color personally)
then there’s the option of different sized drawing grids(4 and 16 below)
idk wtf bounding box is about but it looks like this if it matters to you
“floor” toggles all shadows on the floor, “floor grid” you guessed it puts a like perspective guide grid on the floor that goes to forever, and “shadow” toggles ALL shading. there is NO lighting happening if you turn that off. NONE.
NEXT ITEM! that box thing with the line through it? flips the pose horizontally.
the little person symbol? lets you switch anatomies
camera icon? you can choose from a selection of preset camera angles PLUS an option for … idk what to call it but you can do this!
less flat right!! i’m sure there’s a word i just don’t know but this is maximum *that* so there is less *that* if you want it
the lightbulb gives you a menu like the camera one but it offers a selection of lighting styles with variable intensity
CHARMING!
and that’s not even everything this site provides!!!!!!! they have tutorials, instructional videos, lessons, all sorts of shit!!! (although they are vast majority if not all in japanese just a heads up)
AND ITS ALL FREE
DONT EVEN NEED TO SET UP AN ACCOUNT OR APPROVE OF COOKIES JUST GET IN DO YOUR THING GET OUT NO STRINGS ATTACHED
and if you don’t have ad blocker or are on mobile(like me) NOT TO WORRY
the ads are few and far between! ZERO video ads, NONE take over your screen or glitch you at all, they are of no concern i forget they’re there!
(this is not at all sponsored btw i’m just a genuine fan of this site and i’m happy to spread the good word unprompted)

An overgrown light pole in Poland
Hi! Im Hank, also known as Pansy Leatherwork. I'm a fat, butch, tgurl leatherworker based out of Chicago. I started working with leather last June after working a retail position at a large leather shop in my city. One of the big things that led me to leave that job is how they thought they were making stuff that was inclusive to everyone but just frankly... weren't
Where was the stuff for the transsexuals, the fat bitches, the girlies getting paid $15/hr, the freaks that make up the actual communities I exist as part of?, the freaks like me? So I put in my two weeks, started doing phone sex again to cover my bills, and bought some tools and got to learning
Now, just under a year out, I'm genuinely astonished at how well my work has been received. I operate on sliding scale, even on my website, and getting to hear how my stuff gets used or seeing it in action genuinely fills me with an amount of joy I can't properly express.
If what I do seems interesting to you, you can check out my work at Pansy-Leatherwork.com or my Instagram, @pansy.leatherwork
Listen to me!!
No, really, listen to me
I did not scroll back through 2 hours of posts just for you to ignore this.
Take a second to look at her site
These leather prices are great. Downright criminal even.
You see those beautiful, hand painted CUSTOM stamped collars? That shit would usually be EASILY 100 bucks
Those collars are 70 dollars max and have a sliding scale down to 45
Do you know how insane that is??? Do you know how insane it is that that quality is available practically at cost if you’re struggling???
CHECK OUT HER SHIT AND REBLOG IT TO SPREAD IT.
Pay as high as you can to make this something she can continue to do for others.
All of my cursed bobas so far. I have one more series planned for sure. Maybe more depending on how I feel when the final three are completed. Who knows, maybe I'll make some blessed bobas to compliment these abominations.

how to draw arms ? ?
holy fuck
holy fuck is right… but… does it work with legs???
yes !!
but how much extend
^^^^^^^^^^
I NEARLY CHOKED
ENJFDFNFATFVFDF
finally. i can be accurate
This is too fucking great to not reblog
I give it MASCLES
BIG MACHO
LMAOOOOOO
Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:
The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!
So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:
And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:
It’s easier to see what I’m talking about in this photo of a man squatting:
So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:
But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!
HOW THE HELL DID I FIND THIS POST OMG
Licherally in the midst of drawing a guy and crying at how bad the arms are. Thanks Tumbles
I only ever saw the part where people started drawing the limbs outrageously long and genuinely wanted to know how to fix that, so I’m really thankful to see the rest.
Thank you for the tips, op!
I drew this based on the view from my living room window. I saw two crows sitting on birch trees and felt like it needed to be remembered.
