the book scene where dubois and shapiro tell grace they’re having sex is really interesting. it’s not just that’s he’s uncomfortable talking about sex (although he very much is) it’s that he doesn’t understand why they would have sex if one of them is guaranteed to die in space soon. they kind of included this in the movie (when he asks stratt why everybody is partying and hooking up if they’re all gonna die)
there’s another line that stood out to me in the book, where amnesiac grace initially finds his dead crewmates, and he goes “i hope they weren’t friends of mine!” which imo is a crazy thing to say upon finding two corpses
it’s not just that grace avoids forming close relationships, it’s that he avoids it (in part) in order to avoid experiencing loss. really interesting character trait especially knowing he has no immediate family (did they die? is that why he’s like this?) not even a pet (is he scared the pet will die?)

Things baked into Terry Pratchett books that I didn't realise at first but very much needed and benefited from:
Being unpleasant, weird, socially difficult, off-putting, uncomfortable to be around, annoying, obnoxious, etc does not equal being a bad person
And it definitely doesn't mean others don't have a duty of baseline care about you
They don't have to like you but there is a baseline "we live in a society and I care about what happens to the people around me" type of duty that you are owed
They can think you're unpleasant to be around and even stupid and cringe in your presence but there is a duty of care to your existence
And if you are doing bad things you can stop
There are always chances to think about your actions and why you're doing them and if you really believe it's the right thing
There is always an option to stop
And some people do
And some people don't
But if people do that doesn't mean they aren't still maybe unpleasant to be around or awkward or uncomfortable
The "bad guys" in Terry Pratchett tend to
1. Believe they are in the right
2. Never question that belief
3. Have multiple opportunities to not be doing what they are doing but fully commit
4. May have points that at least feel reasonable on a surface level if you don't think about them too deeply
5. Face consequences of their own actions. Which includes the protagonist having to slap them down. If they didn't put the stuff in motion and refuse to back down they wouldn't be getting slapped
They aren't cartoon baddies they are really realised characters with convictions that they believe in and truly tend to believe their actions are the best thing to be doing. That they are doing what others should have already done
But in Terry Pratchett what makes you on the wrong side of the narrative is not your personality or your looks or how sociable you are
It's your continuing actions that define you AND your unwillingness to change
And I think I very much needed that reinforced in my life

also. there are many reasons why I struggle with the PHM fandom crossovers with iron lung and the fall guy (the most important being I haven't actually seen either of those movies and why are y'all obsessed with adding another random human guy/second ryan gosling when there are ALIENS TO WORLDBUILD) but the one I absolutely cannot ever get behind is the coltland twins au.

what if the reason why the eridians didn't send a suicide mission like earth did is mostly because they're significantly less dependent on their star than humans are?
like... didn't it take Blip-A like 50 earth years just to get to Tau Ceti? And presumably another 50 to get back home. And it definitely seemed like a very important mission, but clearly not super urgent. I know part of that is probably just the scale of eridian lifespans, but what if eridians genuinely aren't as dependent on their star?
If, for instance, most energy is geothermal, and the vast majority of lower life forms on erid are chemosynthetic, then there's actually a strong case to be made that the eridians might have been much less worried about their star going out. It would cause problems eventually, of course, but if they have other major sources of energy and food production than photosynthesis, the astrophage problem would have been significantly less urgent for them.
I'm picturing Grace trying to explain Stratt's choice to Rocky, and Rocky not getting it, until he just goes "By our best estimates, half the population of the planet would have died within 30 years. By the time the beetles make it back to Earth, probably more than 2 billion people will already be dead" and Rocky's just like "oh."
do you guys think that when Stratt was going through the vlogs she got to the “so I met an alien” part and was like ‘shit he went crazy’ only to see Rocky roll on screen like 3 videos later
