he’s got the cutieful harris vibe down, trust
crazy how the printer is the only piece of tech that acts up like that almost every day of its life. and we just accept it
i don't think i've ever met a printer that actually wanted to be a printer. i think most printers have dreams of being on the stage
I met a printer early in my IT career that did not want to be a printer. it sat in a school reprographics room, sullenly chewing any job it was fed - if it deigned to notice them at all.
then one day, a miracle occurred. an exhausted physics teacher, instead of punching in 12 for the number of copies she wanted of the 30-page booklet she had made for her A-level physics class, punched in 1200.
and that printer came to life. this print job was its moment, its magnum opus! it WOULD NOT be parted from it, no matter what we did, until we physically unplugged it from the wall, by which time it had printed almost 200 copies.
moral of the story: no printer wants to be a printer, unless you also do not want it to be a printer for a bit.
printers do not want to be printers because they want to be problems
Something that gave H.P. Lovecraft nightmares is the work of my favorite artist. In "At the Mountains of Madness" he specifically mentions "the strange and disturbing Asian paintings of Nicholas Roerich."
This is what Roerich's paintings look like:
#hp lovecraft thought penguins were grotesque and horrifying#he was not a difficult man to frighten

And this, my darlings, is why finding a skilled cobbler is a game-changer.

One of my favourite things in Heated Rivalry reaction videos is when they can't figure out if Shane is bi or gay by the end of episode 4.
They'll really hear Shane say 'no of course I like girls. I'm Normal™ and normal men like girls. Yeah for sure.' and then later look like a wet sad puppy when faced with the task of having sex with his movie star girlfriend and are still like. Hm. This could mean anything, he did say he liked girls so that must be the truth. No way of knowing for sure.
With the recent Troy and Harris casting announcements, I have seen a lot of people casually (or sometimes even very confidently) talking about things that just don’t happen in the books as if they did. All of these stem from various speculations of “it would be intriguing/interesting/funny IF this thing happened” becoming “this thing DID actually happen,” which sometimes even goes further and gets warped in the world’s worst game of fandom telephone into “I am literally forming my perception and analysis of this character over this thing (that did not happen at all.)”
It is perfectly okay to not read the books, but I would really REALLY caution non-book readers to be careful with what they discuss unless it stems from an actual excerpt from the text.
This is not me gatekeeping. (Please! Go read the books! If you’re unsure of where to start, I would recommend reading Role Model first, which gives proper context for The Long Game) This is me attempting to counteract the misinformation that has only grown tenfold since Troy and Harris were cast.
With all that being said, a list of things that Did Not Happen In The Books:
Troy is not racist. This is a reasonable conclusion to draw, that a homophobic bully could also be racist, but there is no textual evidence of this.
On that note, Troy does not hatecrime Shane. Troy actually does not have any direct interactions with Shane at all. The closest they come to speaking with each other is when they’re on the ice at the same time during an Ottawa v. Montreal game.
Ilya does not hate Troy. Like all of the Centaurs, Ilya is wary and uncertain about Troy at first. He’s annoyed with the situation surrounding the trade, and he definitely hates Dallas. But he does not hate Troy.
I hate to break everyone’s hearts, but... Troy does not ask Ilya for Shane’s number. Troy thinks about doing this, but doesn’t actually follow through. This concept is so funny that I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually does this in the show. This is the actual excerpt from the book:
Settle a bet.

It's the Royal Academy of Art Young Artist's Summer Show. One of my favourite exhibitions of the year. Like. Not only are the older kids insanely talented, the younger ones' artist statements will just punch you right in the face.

Vancouver Public Library
I LOVE LIBRARIES!!
My library does “stuffed animal sleepovers” where kids leave their stuffed animals at the library overnight. Then the staff lets teenagers in after-hours to arrange the stuffed animals into fun scenes and take a bunch of pictures for the library’s social media. And then the little kids come back the next day and get to see all the pictures of their stuffed animals reading, playing games, riding around the library on book carts, etc 🥹
That is so exceptionally beautiful and wholesome I actually cried reading that.
i think we should start openly mocking male creatives who can't figure out how to write women. like actually i think it's embarrassing that it took elliot page transitioning for christopher nolan to give him a good role. why did it take like ten years to get the first female lead in a marvel movie? why is it a Known Fact that stephen king can't write women? why is 50% of the population omitted from large ensemble works? i asked my friend to name a movie directed by a man with a majority female cast and he said ghostbusters 2016. ghostbusters. ghostbusters. g
Elliot Page also starred in Inception before transitioning, and from what I’ve heard is in The Odyssey for less than five minutes, so that’s a really weird example to use. Like, I don’t disagree with the overall point, but why is that the first example? Kind of feels more like criticizing Nolan for hiring a trans actor than actually being about men not able to write women.
Elliot Page is such a good example of how when trans men transition people automatically read privilege into their experiences—them specfically, in a way that singles them out among the sea of cis men they are surrounded with living their lives uncontroversially—when all evidence suggests they are actually experiencing the exact opposite of that. Elliot Page has gotten nothing but hate and scrutinity from the general public and the media and his career has taken some serious damage since coming out.
OP did not say it took Elliot transitioning for Nolan to give him a role: it said it took him transitioning for Nolan to give him a good role. It was about how Nolan can only write male characters, and the character Elliot played in Inception was a female character and had Nolans infamous bad-female-writing. It did not say Elliot got a better role because he is trans: it said Nolan only writes male characters well. With Elliot it's an easy example of an actor Nolan has worked with multiple times (as he's also done with others), but with him you can clearly see how the role of an actor and the writing of said role is dependent on the gender of the character depicted.
OP was also not talking about Elliot Page as the main point. He was one example to show specifically Nolan and his writing for women vs for men characters. It was not about privilege. It did not say Elliot is treated better as a man in Hollywood, it did not even delve into that topic. It was about the way many male writers Cannot Write Female Characters. It was not about Elliot Page Specifically, and nowhere did it talk abt his struggles or supposed privilege.
idk who needs to hear this but it’s healthier for you to just accept that you’re gonna be kinda fat than it is to live the rest of your life miserably trying to monitor yourself to maintain a skinny weight your body doesn’t want to hold onto
yep, pretty much

Companies in the 2000s: You wouldn't download a car! Digital copies are still stealing, even if the original copy remains with us.
Companies in the 2020s: That digital copy, which you have paid for, doesn't really belong to you. We're removing it from your library now.
Companies deleting media you've literally purchased is 1000x more realistically "stealing" than digital piracy, you cannot change my mind
