Shane is not nothing. Shane is 198 pounds of muscle, strength that Shane has worked for. In the weight room, on the ice, eating whatever balance of protein and fiber the team's nutritionist told him would optimize his body. Shane has legs strong enough to propel him down the ice for three periods plus OT, faster than almost anyone. Maybe even faster than Ilya. He has shoulders firm enough to hold his own when he's checked against the boards.

Ilya's hands dig into the meat of Shane's thighs. Ilya feels every pound.

He knows the "like," he knows this is meant as an analogy (a word he learned from The New Yorker). He does not understand the appeal. He wants to feel Shane in his arms. He wants to know he is there, real and solid. Ilya does not love hockey the way Shane does, but he understands that sharp joy of pushing your body to its limit, of victory, of knowing that you'd earned it.

Ilya cannot earn Shane if he is "like nothing."

Shane is not like nothing. He is not supposed to be nothing. Even when his heaviness has nothing to do with muscle and everything to do with the panic-static that sometimes takes over his brain. That is not nothing either. That is not anything Ilya cannot hold.

I'm doing another prompt with my fellow donkey artists and the pose I'm working on reminds me of this piece I did. It's based on a classical painting called the first kiss of Adam and Eve by Salvador Viniegra.
