ITHACA, N.Y. — The Museum of the Earth, one of the last natural history museums in Upstate New York, faces an imminent threat of foreclosure
If you have ever been tempted by a Paleozoic Pal, like a a stuffed trilobite or a full size eurypterid body pillow, now's the time to buy one, before they and a really lovely little museum are gone for good 😭😭😭
Paleozoic Pals™ Paleozoic Pals™ are the Paleontological Research Institution’s line of plush fossils. The Paleozoic is the era before dinosa
This was the museum I went to often in my childhood. I'm no longer able to visit unless I visit family, but this place holds a special place in my heart.
As stated in the article, they hold around 7 million artifacts- many of which are orphaned fossils, with the museum taking in collections that otherwise would have been trashed.
Please consider buying a Paleozoic Pal, but I'll also leave a direct donation link as well.
THE GIANT EURYPTERID BODY PILLOW IS BACK IN STOCK
I JUST WENT INTO A FUGUE STATE AND BOUGHT ME A 16 INCH CUDDLE BUDDY WITH PLATED TEETH!! DUNKIE, MY BELOVED!!
Screeching aside, anyone who can afford to, go look through their shop! They got clothes, and cute gifts, and books and all kinds of other awesome stuff! Ye, the shipping sucks, but we need to keep our museums alive! (the good ones, not the British Museum of Thievery XP)
HE’S HERE! MY BIG BOY IS HERE!! (And yes he is my BIG boy despite only being 16 inches, you shush!)
He took nearly a month to get here, but that’s because of ALL THE ORDERS THEY’VE BEEN GETTING! OVER 1800 ORDERS! This is why I love the online community!!
Now if you don’t mind I’m going to tuck Duncan into my sweater and go work on the piles of stuff I still have to do 😅
For anyone curious what's happening with the PRI they're digging themselves out! An anonymous donor gave them $1 mn which they used to secure a stay on the forclosure for the rest of the year and they're approximately a third of the way to buying their way out of the mortgage.

Researchers are announcing that a 53-year-old man in Germany has been cured of HIV.
Referred to as “the Dusseldorf patient” to protect his privacy, researchers said he is the fifth confirmed case of an HIV cure. Although the details of his successful treatment were first announced at a conference in 2019, researchers could not confirm he had been officially cured at that time.
Today, researchers announced the Dusseldorf patient still has no detectable virus in his body, even after stopping his HIV medication four years ago.
Unbelievably fucking cool
A twice-yearly shot has shown to be 100 percent effective in preventing HIV infections in a study of women, and published results show it wo
Between that and new preventative shot, we might be able to eradicate HIV in the near future.
Do not forget this. No matter what happens do not forget we’re this close to finally ending this awful virus

it is easy to scroll past mutual aid posts – i don’t make many of these so please take a second to read and share.
a friend of mine is asking for financial help for food + housing, if anyone has disposable income please consider donating to help tari find a stable living situation. they are having to choose between having a safe, warm, clean place to sleep (other than a public bench) and work and being able to eat – and often are not able to achieve either of these things.
instagram hasn’t yielded them any donations so far, and they are not on tumblr so i am sharing this. i have a decent number of followers on here so you have the opportunity to make a change. please contribute if you have a few dollars to spare or SHARE if you cannot, anything helps, even a reblog to spread the message.

The United States has been found guilty of 5 cases of genocide by the UN as of October 23rd.
The UN International Tribunal of Human Rights Abuses Against Black, brown, and Indigenous Peoples had a 2 day hearing and found the United States guilty of 5 counts of genocide for Police Killings, Mass Incarceration, Prisoners of War, Environmental Racism, and Public Health Inequities.
The International Tribunal on Human Rights Abuses Against Black, Brown and Indigenous Peoples was held Oct. 23-25 at The Malcolm X and Dr. B
After having heard the testimony of numerous victims of Police Racism, Mass Incarceration, Environmental Racism, Public Health Inequities and of Political Prisoners/Prisoners of War, together with the expert testimonies and graphic presentations, as well as the copious documentation submitted and admitted in the record, the Panel of Jurists find the U.S. and its subdivisions GUILTY of all five counts. We find grounds that Acts of Genocide have been committed.
Give acts of genocide against Black, Brown, and Indigenous peoples.
The International Tribunal 2021 and subsequent verdict places the Movement for liberation and self-determination on the international stage

With Halloween around the corner, I’d like to remind everyone again that there will be no screamers or jump scares or whatnot on here. This blog is safe from that.
Dylan Thomas — Poem in October
hi tumblr! i’m feeling much better than during my stomach episode near the start of the month, and i’m able to keep down solid food again! problem is.. there is very little of it in the house. my kitchen contains… canned veggies, a good amount of rice, a few leftover Ensure, and a single MRE. so if anyone can pitch in 10$ for a little grocery shop visit that would be stellar!! (if you cant, thats fine! just please reblog! ♥) paypal.me/treesinspace / cash.me/$junabugs
just got a cryptic text from our landlady about backrent and “finding better tenants”. she wants 250$ ontop of this months full rent, and to pay that it means not buying any groceries at all this month or.. anything else, really. so.. gonna need to rely on this post for the month of october for food. please reblog, if you can. :(
what is the most phallic or the most uncomfortable object you've ever unearthed? Also, have you ever licked any bones?? if so, pls describe the texture in PAINFUL detail
My friend, I think you might be overestimating how often archaeologists encounter something that we believe to be a phallus or phallic symbol. However, the most uncomfortable thing I've ever unearthed was an old mercury thermometer that was broken in half. I sure hope that there wasn't too much mercury in that soil...
I have indeed licked a bone, but again I think that you might be overestimating how thrilling this is. Take a dry twig without the bark on it, rub it around in some dirt, and then lick it. That's what it tastes like. When we lick something we're generally not trying to taste it, but rather to see if it sticks to the moisture of your tongue. Bone is porous and will stick, rocks (although some fossils might be an exception) will not.
I wish that I had more glamorous answers for you, but the truth is that a lot of archaeology isn't nearly as exciting as movies would have you believe.
-Reid
We also don't lick anything if we think there's a chance of it being human bone. Very important clarification
I mean... Would licking the bone count as corpse desecration, or is it just weird? Cause... Like... I have mental disconnect of bones from actual human person, and my brain is just like "But... They're dead, they won't care."
I think it really really depends on the cultural context, although I would still try to avoid licking a human bone if I can help it.
*archaeology* is boring. *archaeologists* are fucking wild.
Bone licking seems to be a North American thing, I’ve been digging in the UK for ages and never seen or heard of anyone doing it here. Though tbf, the amount of contamination on the average site I was working (cental london FTW) meant that don’t lick the dirt was always on the risk assessment. My favorite method is to tap on my trowel, bone makes a different sound to rocks or pottery.
Ironically skull fragments (especially juvenile skull fragments) sound like fine pottery if you tap them on a lab bench.
We don’t lick stuff in the lab, because we know that 99% of the stuff in the box is definitely human bone, but we do tap things on the bench when we have rocks that look like bone, bone fragments that look like rock, or dirt clumps that look like either bone or rock.
As a central london and contamination side note: I know of at least one post-medieval site where they had a rule never to open/damage a lead coffin that was still sealed because lead coffins can do interesting things on a preservation front and a) there might be various noxious things inside and b) they once found skin with intact smallpox pustules when they opened a sealed lead coffin and (understandably) their safety people went ‘NOPE! Never again, do not pass go, do not open!’

my local library doesn't have a maximum book checkout limit and I am about to make them regret this
update: I checked out 36 books & put in hold requests for 26 more. the librarian who checked me out didn't even flinched, just said it's "nice to see more people reading." these people are fucking bonkers please quadruple local library budgets
There is precisely one situation in which librarians hate you for checking out a lot of books. It’s when you wait until the library is closing and haul up a huge load of stuff to check out, so everybody has to wait to go home. Otherwise? Librarians love to see you check stuff out. Heck, grab a few things on your way to the checkout desk that you don’t even want, that’s great. Higher circulation justifies higher budgets.
This is Very Good Info to know!!!
Man, when I was like 16 I got so sick of being made fun of for being the fat kid that I took an axe down inna woods, chopped down a tree, and started doing log-lifts all the time. I got strong as fuck, but I didn’t lose no weight. I actually got bigger.
Same thing happened when I got into fighting. I got even stronger, and I got *fast*, man, and nimble, like a cat. Still chubby.
Body-building culture is a bunch of crap, my dude. Functional muscle is not necessarily toned or lean. You can be swole as hell and still be heavy. And that’s cool.
Embrace your inner barbarian. And when fatphobic little gym twinks try to body shame you, you should DESTROY THEM with your MIGHTY AXE
Can comfirm, i am Quite Fat ™ but i still hit my punching bag hard enough last week make it touch the ceiling and broke a finger in the process
You know, I train with (martial arts) a bunch of dudes, and a few bodybuilders have showed up over the years.
And every damn one of those huge shredded motherfuckers has the endurance of a fucking newborn puppy. Fifteen minutes into warmups and they’re panting for air like like they’re about to die. I’ve sparred them and every one of them telegraphs their moves about two weeks in advance, and are slower than my dead grandpa because their huge useless muscles get in the damn way.
Now. I also work with a couple of guys who are not weightlifters. They do, however, do very physical jobs and are Big Dudes. Picture this sort of build.
No abs to speak of, a bit of a tummy, and those motherfuckers can pick up one of the weightlifters and throw them.
And they’re fast. Like, unfair fast.
Bodybuilding culture is bullshit. Embrace your status as a giant barbarian and if anyone gives you crap throw them off a mountain.
unpopular opinion but i think the film and tv industries should have better labor laws even if it makes it harder or impossible to depict certain things
i dont care if it makes it harder to produce game of thrones or whatever, acting should not leave women traumatized
Okay I know this is about acting and people are getting more traction about it (sexuality safety coordinators are a job! yell about them. demand your shows get them) but
Any person who has worked on a set for more than a few years has at least one person they know who died.
Not usually on set, but afterwards. Because we don’t have anyone shutting down production for unsafe practices when “unsafe” means 16 hour days. Or more. For weeks. Finishing a day before hour 12 (not including lunch) is considered an early leave.
I had teachers tell us not to, unless we absolutely had to, take music video gigs because they’ll work you for 24 hours and send you to drive home. And if we had to work that, pull over and nap in our car because multiple people per year fall asleep at the wheel and go over the canyons around LA.
I know you mean acting but please. Don’t forget the crew. We have a shockingly high rate of suicide because these working schedules leave us with no sleep, no time outside of work, and it destroys lives, relationships, and families. Burnout is high. Chronic illness and broken bodies are common. Cocaine use in order to get through a 20 hour day is rampant. Every single one of your reality shows is fueled by cocaine.
The number of days that are scheduled to shoot a feature has shrunk dramatically in the past two decades. Which means longer days.
Netflix shows are notorious for being poorly organized, understaffed, and long days.
There are labor laws but what they do is levy fines. Those fines are either factored into budget, people are bullied into not reporting actual hours, or crew members see them as incentive to take those jobs because more money and cost of living is high. (Also this industry has a crew culture of dick measuring by sticking your wang in a blender and boasting about how many 100 hour weeks you pulled.)
this can be applied for people working in animation as well. Like I know people who work at Pixar and they straight up work 12 hour days and go into work on weekends to meet their deadlines. The incredibles 2 made over a billion dollars and Pixar still cut jobs due to “budget”. The entertainment industry is a business at the end of the day. There here to make money and they are going to do it at the expense of workers because they know no one is going to do anything about it.
It's that time of year again
After an accident that has left me with a hairline fracture in my vertebrae, I am now in desperate need of additional funds in order to get an increasingly critical surgery to prevent paralysis or death. This is in addition to the already established itinerary of surgeries needed to remove the multiple growths in my spine that are expanding and growing everyday. I am terrified of what feels inevitable, and I am in so much pain. I truly need help. I am sorry to continue bombarding your dashboards with my pleas for help, but I wouldn't be doing it if this were not a life or death situation. Please share this, and if you are able, I sincerely need donations. All of my expenses are piling up on me all at once, and I can't number the amount of panic attacks this catastrophe has caused me to have. I am so terrified, and I honestly feel so much shame in having to ask for help to keep me alive, but if there is anyone that can spare anything out of the kindness of their hearts, I cannot tell you how much it would mean to me. You would quite literally be saving my life.
I have both a severely deformed neck and a massive growth inside my spinal cord. W… Alistair Corvelle needs your support for Spinal Growth

your reminder that the “psychotic-disordered person is actually just able to see all the magic portals and has powers!” trope is not only overused but can also actively harm ppl w delusions especially
anyways now that pride is over and it's disability month let's talk about how to make pride more accessible for your disabled friends who had to miss out on pride events these past years because of inaccessibility.
actually yeah lets talk about this. i want to mention some accessibility things most people dont think about.
here's any easy way to avoid alienating those with mobility issues: rent an accessible venue. it eliminates problems for you to fix, because they're already handled. obviously that might not be the most easy option, but it makes it easier on you.
maybe hand out earplugs if youre gonna have loud music. because. wow it is loud. or make a clarification that the music will be loud so people can bring their own.
for the love of god turn off the fog machines. leave them at home. my friend had to leave pride early bcuz of an asthma attack from both fog machines and people smoking. if you HAVE to have fog machines, keep it to a specific area where nobody would miss anything by not going there.
^ same with smoking. again with the friend with asthma. and the me with asthma. have a specific area where people can smoke, dont just let them do it anywhere and everywhere. i get it sounds ridiculous to limit smoking but god. there was smoke everywhere and it killed me.
PUT SEATS AT REGULAR INTERVALS AROUND THE EVENT DEAR LORD.
this isn't even an accessibility thing really but more pride events should hand out free water. thats important. people dehydrate easily and sometimes you forget to bring water or run out. it'd be nice.
sign. language. interpreters. puh-lease. if you're gonna have public speaking or some music sets, hire some interpreters.
there's tons more so feel free to add on but this is just stuff i've noted from my experiences at pride events
Have like a room somewhere that's quiet and has some chairs in it for ppl with sensory issues who might need to cool down after being around too many stimuli.
A big Pride event in Boston this year had a quiet-time tent tucked away from the speakers and around a corner, with some volunteers facilitating coloring and stim toys; I’d love to see that more!
