Have you actually unpacked the right wing rhetoric you grew up around, or do you just think it's bad when done to groups you like?

An excerpt from the trial of Elinor Crane, who was arrested in Middlesex in 1693 on suspicion of burglary. A witness claimed one of the burglars was a woman in men's clothing, and Elinor had previously been seen in the area dressed as a man.
"But the Court asking her why she went in Mans Apparel, the Prisoner replyed, She went to Wooe a Widow. Upon the whole Matter the Jury brought her in not Guilty."
(source: Old Bailey Proceedings: Accounts of Criminal Trials, April 26, 1693.)
I often see posts about curating your own online experience that make the point, “content creators aren’t your parents.” And, yes, that is absolutely true! And I try not to be like “as a parent,“ but as a parent…
EVEN PARENTS ARE SUPPOSED TO ENCOURAGE RESPONSIBLE READING/VIEWING BEHAVIOR. NOT filter everything ahead of time for their kid.
When my kiddo was 5, his pediatrician was asking him the usual Well Child Visit questions (“What are your favorite foods? What do you do to get your body moving? Do you know what to do if you get lost in a public place?” Etc.) and she asked, “What do you do if you see something on TV that scares or upsets you?”
I piped up like, “Oh, he doesn’t watch TV without one of us in the room,” which was true at the time and is still largely true now. She said, “Yes, but that won’t always be the case, so make sure you’re talking to him about what to do if he sees something that upsets him.”
So we started talking to him about that, and the answer is simple: “Turn it off or leave the room, and talk to someone you trust about what you saw and what you’re feeling.”
The answer is NOT “Ask your parents to make sure you never see anything upsetting again,” because that’s just not possible — and ultimately that would be doing the kid a disservice, since sooner or later he’s going to be out in the world where we can’t control what he watches or reads. That doesn’t mean we don’t try to make sure he’s watching/reading age-appropriate stuff, it just means that’s not the only safeguard he has — and that’s a good thing.
So yes, content creators aren’t your parents and aren’t responsible for making sure you never see anything you don’t like — but also, your own parents should have taught you what to do when that happens. So if they didn’t, take it from me, your internet mom:
Turn it off.
Walk away.
Talk to someone you trust about how you’re feeling.
And leave the person who created the thing that upset you alone.

Reblog if you’re a true 90s kid and you remember this tumblr
okay, a brief analysis of the new clip. we can see lestat in three different stages of grief reading the book: you can notice that he's wearing 3 different outfits, the changes in his mental state and some other details. while the clip is edited in the way to show everything happening quite quickly, it's obviously not just a single night spent like that for lestat. he reread that book multiple times.
in the first part he's reading it more or less casually, lying on the couch and all, only loudly commenting on details that particularly piss him off. probably the first time he's reading it. he's mad as hell, but he's still not fully spiraling. the second stage seems to be him rationalizing & scrutinizing: we can see he brought some pink stickers, highlighters, bookmarks. he's rereading the book more carefully, nitpicking on inaccuracies. he's trying to get control over the book.
and finally, it all stopped mattering. despite all his desperate efforts, the reflection of himself he sees in the book doesn't stop hurting him. he's drinking. he's fully spiraling. yet another reread and now it's time for black marker scribblings. that's exactly when "never fucking happened" was written (because no, no, he can't reread and nitpick that scene anymore, he simply can't) and when he's throwing the book around the room. lestat remembers everything, but it won't help him.
I do not believe the accounts of Sam Neil dying from pneumonia--He died rescuing a baby dinosaur from a flooded river, and that's the only story I am accepting.
I had not considered this, @invisible-goats ; thank you.
A reminder, since Graham croaked:
You can criticize hypocrisy without making homophobic jokes or using homophobic nicknames.
And if YOU feel YOU can't, that's just a fucking skill issue.
Get good or get blocked. I got no patience for it.
Like genuinely, if I see one more person, but especially one more queer person, whipping out "Lady G" or photoshopping big tits on Graham or making the most fucking boring-ass poppers jokes, I'm gonna fucking lose it.
You can talk about the fact that it's really fucked up that his frequenting of gay sex workers was an "open secret," as was his sexuality full stop, without making jokes that boil down to "hahaha look at the faggot."

dislike how many mental health posts on here are just "you've never done anything wrong in your life ever and they were evil for that"
maybe you did do something wrong. maybe you hurt someone. maybe you have said awful things. maybe you were just as bad as them. maybe. but what matters is that you move on. you have to try. you have to wake up and be kinder. you have to learn and listen and grow. maybe you did do something wrong but that doesn't mean you have to keep doing that. as long as you are alive, you can change
Look at my birthday cake...
sometimes…….things that are fanon………are worse

grace couldn't teach rocky any english swear words because he knew if he did his life would be full of shit like "grace being bitch because no coffee yet, question?" and he'd have to live with knowing it was his fault
it’s really interesting how the guys that fight against paying child support the hardest are the ones that could afford to do it. these dudes will quit their well paying salaried job with benefits just to avoid their pay getting docked and potentially going to reimburse the mother of their child for buying their kid new shoes. they’ll leave their child without health insurance and work under the table jobs because they really hate their child and former S/O that much.
men who have been conditioned to believe that having kids and caring for them is somehow emasculating
they swear it is a man’s role to provide and protect but they’re going out of their way to deprive and endanger
They believe that their role is to provide and protect the ones they choose to; it's not a responsibility (though they'll frame it like it is to sound better), but a power that they hold over others. Child support is emasculating because they see it as being forced to provide for someone who isn't "theirs" any more. They don't see it as supporting a child that they have ongoing responsibility for because they believe that they should have the right to withdraw that responsibility at any time, that unconditional responsibility for a child is the woman's role. They see it as being financially cucked.
#these men like the power that being a provider gives#they like the idea that you are dependent on them and that they could take it away from you at any moment#but mandatory child support doesn't really give you that choice or any power over the child/ex#you can't leverage it the same way to get what you want
My friend's coworker has a boyfriend who literally does not have a bank account and keeps his money in CASHAPP to avoid child support.
He used to make good money. He quit his job to avoid child support.
The coworker is pregnant.
When I worked in branch banking, there was more than one man who would come in and ask to have his checking account closed and a new one opened bc of "fraudulent ACH charges." I knew it was actually his child support each time but was told I couldn't refuse the customer request.
Until...
One of them eventually had a giant note placed on his profile by legal saying we were not able to close any of his accounts or open new ones without clearance from legal, bc he kept cycling through account after account every time the state found the new one and submitted the garnishment paperwork.
IIRC he eventually got banned from the branch bc he threatened me & others when we told him no.
